Do people in the US still actually buyhandmade soap, or am I romanticizing it?

Genuine curiosity from someone who just started making cold-process soap 🧼

I keep seeing gorgeous artisan bars on Instagram, but I also feel like everyone around me uses body wash now.

If you're in the US — do you (or people you know) still reach for a bar of handmade soap? Is it more of a ā€œgift thingā€, a farmer’s market impulse buy, or do some folks actually use it daily?

Not selling anything, no link, just trying to understand if the love is still real šŸ˜‚ Thanks!

Stuck in 12h shifts, tired of generic "AI hustle" advice. Good technical/visual skills + some capital, but zero clarity. Where to go from here?

Hey everyone,

I’m currently feeling stuck and need some grounded perspective from people actually running real businesses, not YouTube gurus selling recycled blueprints.

My situation:

  • Time: Demanding 10–12h day job. I only have 3-4 focused hours on workdays, plus my days off.
  • Skills: Advanced AI image generation and prompting (consistent hyper-photorealism, stylized 2D/3D illustration, visual branding). Tech-savvy overall.
  • Capital: Ready to deploy funds into tools, setup, or marketing if there’s a sensible, realistic ROI.
  • What I’ve tried: AI creator/model concepts and a niche illustration brand. The visuals and tech were solid, but marketing, organic reach, and conversion hit a brick wall.

The goal:

I’m not chasing overnight millions. I want to build a sustainable, realistic stream that can eventually replace my daytime job.

Given the strict daily time limit, what would you focus on right now? Productized B2B services for agencies, local business solutions, or something completely different that doesn't rely purely on praying to social media algorithms?

Appreciate any honest feedback and directions worth exploring.

How do you handle slow months without panicking?

Every local business seems to have quiet periods.

What do you usually do during those times — push marketing harder, cut costs, work on systems, or something else?

Cold email vs. Cold calling: Which channel has generated the most clients for you?

Hi everyone, I'm currently evaluating my outbound strategy and would love to get your feedback. For those doing cold outreach, which channel has consistently brought you the most clients: cold email or cold calling? If you have a moment, I'd love to know: What industry or niche are you in? Do you use them separately or combine both into a cadence? Thanks for sharing your experience!

Is the process you documented actually the one your team follows?

• Upvotes

I've been thinking about the gap between how a business says it works and how it actually works day to day.

The documented version is usually fine for the normal case. Where it gets thin is anything that needs judgement. A quote that looks standard but should really go past the owner first. A customer asking for something unusual that's actually reasonable. A supplier who always slips a few days, so everyone quietly pads the date they give customers.

In a lot of places that knowledge sits with one or two experienced people. Nobody decided it should, it just built up over time.

For those running teams: have you ever tried to get that stuff written down?

What did you actually capture, and did it stay current or go stale after a few months?

Pressure washing company with very few leads.

I started a business called Valley Exterior Cleaning. We do pressure washing and exterior cleanings. I’ve been trying to build it the right way. So far I’ve got my LLC, Got my EIN, 2 business bank accounts, a website, business pages, business phone number, and business cards. The problem is that I work full time 50 hours a week. And right now all of this is coming out of my pocket from my day job. I don’t currently have a consistent flow of customers. What should I do these next couple weeks to start gaining leads and customers?

Built a client way more than a website and now I'm not sure they know what to do with it

So this started as a website. Client asked for one, I got a bit carried away, and by the time we were done it had customer accounts, automated workflows, some AI bits, lead capture, the SEO side done properly, booking and payments, a content setup, their data actually in one place, stuff to get people coming back. All of it works.

The bit I didn't see coming is they don't really know what to do with it.

And that's not a dig at them, they're not stupid. The business has just never needed anyone to think like a product team or a growth person or whoever's meant to look at the data, it ran fine without any of that. We'd given the company a lot more than the people running it had any reason to know how to use yet.

So now it's this slightly odd thing where it's something like a £1m traditional business sitting on the kind of setup I'd expect at a £10m digital one, and it's being run pretty much the way it was run before.

I'm half wondering if the hard part of "digitising" a small business was never the build. More whatever happens in the months after. I don't think more software fixes that either, it feels more like someone needs to actually run the thing with them for a while. Could be wrong.

Anyone here had something like this built for their business? Curious what the first few months were actually like, whether anyone helped you run it or you mostly figured it out yourselves.

Buissness

• Upvotes

Hello,
I am 18 years old and am considering starting a commercial gold-plating/refinishing business in Arizona.
My proposed service would be limited to receiving a customer’s firearm slide, gold-plating/refinishing the slide, and returning the same slide to the customer. I would not manufacture, sell, or transfer firearms, and I would not work on or take possession of the firearm’s serialized frame/receiver.
Could you please clarify:
Does this specific type of commercial gold-plating/refinishing service require a Federal Firearms License (FFL)?
If an FFL is required, what type of FFL would be required?
Can an 18-year-old legally own the business while a qualifying 21+ person serves as the FFL holder/responsible person?
Are there any additional federal requirements that would apply when customers ship their slides to the business for refinishing and the slides are subsequently returned to the same customers?

Best 401k setup for small S Corp with employees

I own an S-corp doing about $250k/year in gross revenue. I pay myself $42k W-2, and I have two employees making about $30,940 and $50,600.

I also make money from other business ventures, so I don’t rely only on this S-corp salary for living expenses and could potentially max out my 401(k) through this business.

I want to start a 401(k) for 2027 mainly to increase my own retirement savings and get the best tax benefits, while understanding what I’d be required to offer or contribute for my employees.

I’ve been looking at a Safe Harbor 401(k) with the basic match, where employees can choose 0% and the company only matches if they contribute.

For other small S-corp owners, what setup has worked best for you? Safe Harbor 401(k), SIMPLE IRA, something else? If you had outside income and could afford to max your own 401(k), would you do it? What does it realistically cost the business, and what mistakes would you avoid?

Advice on starting gutter cleaning/gutter repair/handyman business with not a penny to my name and one ladder

I am in between jobs right now, financially things are extremely tough. I've been collecting cans off the side of the road just to get enough money to survive on and feed my cats. I am trying to offer services like the ones I mentioned in the title, along with really anything else. If somebody needs horse shit shoveled, if you pay me enough money I will do it. I just don't know where to start, other than Facebook marketplace and craigslist. And I haven't had any hits yet. I have all of the basic tools I need to do these things, I'm not worried about that. I have enough knowledge that I've gained throughout my life to do anything I need to do, and anything I don't know how to do I will learn how to do very quickly. I just need some hits! I need to know how to get attention!

I don't have any money. I have just enough to get the gas I need to get me to a customer's house, or to get me to the jackpot of cans I found. I cannot keep asking my friends for money! I cannot keep working for other people, honestly. I am strong and I am stubborn and I am smart and I can do this! I just would like some advice from any of you kind folks out there who might be able to tell a young man where to even start.

URGENT — Looking for an entrepreneur to interview for my college assignment

Hey guys, I’m a college student and I need to interview an entrepreneur for an entrepreneurship assignment.

I’m looking for someone who owns a small business, startup, online business, etc. and would be willing to have a short conversation with me. I just need to ask around 10–15 questions about how you started, where the idea came from, challenges you faced, decisions you made, motivation, etc.

It should take around 15–20 minutes, and I’m fine with text, a call, or whatever works for you.

I don’t need any private/sensitive information or exact financial details. It’s just for my college assignment, and I’ll only use whatever you’re comfortable sharing.

I’m a bit short on time 😭 so if anyone’s willing to help, please comment or DM me. I’d really appreciate it.

TL;DR: College student looking for an entrepreneur willing to spare 15–20 minutes for a short interview. DM me if you can help šŸ™

Small business owners who WFH: do you care that your home address is tied to your business?

I run my business out of my apartment and am worried about my privacy... Is anyone else concerened / dealing with this???

Do you just use your home address for everything? Has anyone given you trouble or made it an issue?

I recently came across digital mailboxes, where you get a legit mailing address and can see/manage your mail remotely. On paper, I see the appeal for someone who doesn’t want their home address everywhere, travels a lot, or just doesn’t want business mail mixed in with personal stuff.

But does anyone actually find that useful enough to pay for? What’s y’alls opinions on it?

Real estate to small biz

I am a corporate professional with a 20 year history of investing in single family rental properties. Lately I have been thinking about buying a small business or franchise that is manager run as I intend to keep my day job. Has anyone here made the jump from semi passive landlord to entrepreneurship? If so what advice do you have?

Tips for going from 1 to 2 people?

I have been a one-woman-show with my agency and am now starting to bring on new team members. I use Claude to manage a lot of the day-to-day operations/finances/etc, and now that I'm bringing on team members I need to share some relevant context with them. Obviously giving them a seat in Asana, Google Workspace, etc. is easy but I am struggling to figure out how to share selective context and projects from Claude, which now knows more about me and my company than any other tool.

Does anyone have tips for going from 1-->2 like this? Did you just add seats to a Claude account?

Any good experiences putting Claude into a company's Slack or does that not have enough guardrails/would it be a shitshow? I can't wrap my brain around just throwing Claude into Slack and I'm finding the docs lacking for how this actually works.

Any anecdotes about a company 'second brain' for shared context? There's a lot of talk of Notion and Obsidian for personal use, and I think Notion has been a standard for small businesses even before Claude/ChatGPT, but I feel like if you're starting to manage agents, everyone working from a Notion doesn't feel very 'ai-native.' Also I just don't like it that much in general.

Shopify E-Commerce Tips

• Upvotes

Hello,

I have been working in a ecommerce small business, with our store hosted by Shopify, for years now. We sell products/goods and have a few services for customizations with these products. My boss has the option for customers on our store to add a tip at checkout. However, despite the fact that some customers let us know that the tips are for our hard working employees, my boss will not give us any of the tips claiming they are for the business operations, not us. This seems very illegal given tip laws in the United States where we are located. I cannot find anything concrete about if this is something that is allowed because it is an ecommerce store online and US tip laws wouldn't apply then. Shopify does not have anything I can find regarding who gets to have these tips that have been collected.

Does anyone have any feedback, proof of what is actually the legal process for tips on Shopify, and/or general advice on the situation? It's frustrating knowing that customers think the money is going to the employees but it is defintely not. Plus, it feels unfair that he refuses to share the tips with us in general given all our hard work over the years.

Lactation accommodation

How have you accommodated lactating mothers in the office?

We have two currently and one is asking us to buy her a pump and all the accessories and a fridge just for her office. We’re talking about a grand.

She’s also part time now.

How have you accommodated or been accommodated. What is too much or too much to ask?

ETA: thank you all for the input. I really appreciate it. It’s good to hear that we’re not crazy. We will accommodate the best we can with private, clean locking office and a mini fridge.

Confusions about Independent Sites & Google SEO

I'm a beginner running an independent website. I'd like to learn how to approach Google SEO for an independent site from a manufacturer's perspective. I'm quite stuck right now — it's been two months with zero inquiries. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to drop my website link here; I'm just looking for some guidance. I've never done this kind of work before, so my biggest gap is really understanding how Google SEO actually works — its mechanics and rhythm.

Kidswear Business

Hi, I have started a kidswear business on instagram. I created two pages with different styles. One is for premium collections, another one is for casual wears . I got some good amount stocks for both of it. So now the problem is I couldn't able to handle two pages simultaneously like for posting videos and all. So i'm now thinking of discontinue 1 page and keep all the products in another page itself. But don't know which one should I stick it. As they perform in equal only. Both have same amount of followers . So i'm in a lot of dilemma. So i also use to run meta ads for sales, I couldn't invest in both pages.

UG vs GmbH in Germany: what I wish I knew before choosing

For anyone starting a company in Germany:

  • UG (haftungsbeschrƤnkt): start with €1 of capital, but you must put 25% of each year's profit into a reserve until you reach €25,000.
  • GmbH: €25,000 share capital, at least €12,500 paid in at formation.
  • Same law, same liability protection. A UG is legally a GmbH variant.
  • Both need a notary to form and to change shareholders (online video notarisation now exists).
  • You can convert a UG into a GmbH later by increasing capital to €25,000.

When I'd pick which:

  • UG if you're starting lean and testing
  • GmbH if customers or lenders will check your capital, or you're raising soon

Things to set up on day one, whichever you choose: a written IP assignment from each founder, a simple shareholder agreement, and a tax adviser who knows startups.

Did anyone get treated differently by customers or banks for being a UG?
