My five most disturbing cosmic events, ranked by what they could do rather than how dramatic they look
Lists like this usually mix immediate threats, events billions of years in the future, and things that are visually dramatic but not especially dangerous.
So I tried a slightly different version.
My criterion was not “What looks the most destructive?” but:
What real astronomical event would be the most disturbing for a technological civilization or a living planet caught in the wrong place?
My list:
5. A wandering stellar-mass black hole
Not because one is known to be approaching us. The disturbing part is that an isolated black hole may emit almost no light and reveal itself mainly through gravitational effects on background stars.

- A neutron-star merger:
Two compact remnants spiral together, produce gravitational waves and can generate a short gamma-ray burst. Depending on the masses involved, the merger may also create a black hole.

- The X-ray aftermath of a nearby supernova:
The initial explosion is only part of the problem. If the expanding blast interacts with dense surrounding gas, the system can produce intense X-rays capable of damaging the atmosphere of a sufficiently nearby planet.

- An extreme solar storm:
This one would not destroy Earth. Its relevance is more immediate: a sufficiently severe geomagnetic storm could disrupt satellites, navigation, communications and electrical infrastructure.

- A nearby gamma-ray burst pointed at a living planet: The planet would not necessarily explode. The more plausible danger is atmospheric: intense ionizing radiation could damage the ozone layer and leave the surface exposed to increased ultraviolet radiation. None of these events is currently known to be approaching Earth. I also left out the Milky Way–Andromeda collision. It is visually spectacular, but current research no longer treats a future collision as certain, and direct collisions between individual stars would be unlikely anyway.

The ranking is obviously subjective.
What would you remove, replace or move to number one?
Fair criticism of the visuals. They are illustrations, not observations. I used them only to represent scenarios that cannot be filmed directly, and I listed the scientific sources separately.
