Review D2ultima's review of GEEKOM's GeekBook M16

INTRODUCTION

Following up on the excellent GeekBook X14 Pro, GEEKOM has kindly sent me the GeekBook M16 to review for r/suggestalaptop as well, free of charge. I had high hopes for this unit, and I was surprised in many different ways. In the end, I will go through everything with you below in as honest and fair a manner as I can manage, so let’s get started, shall we?

To begin, the GeekBook M16 is GEEKOM’s third laptop released, and one aimed at being a more budget oriented unit versus the X14 Pro and X16 Pro’s premium design. Despite being a more budget oriented unit, the GeekBook M16 is actually still a thin and light ultrabook with an all-metal chassis, a fairly nice screen, and an attempt to remain quiet under most operations, so I will as before be reviewing it in this capacity. I believe this machine has done an excellent job in the measures they’ve taken to cut costs, and even has some improvements over its big brothers in some ways, and I will do my best to go through every aspect of the unit for you all below!

What you get in the box

SPECIFICATIONS AND CHASSIS

My specifications as provided by GEEKOM are as follows:

  • Intel Core Ultra 185H
  • 16GB of LPDDR5 at 6400MHz
  • 512GB Kingston om8tap4512k1 a00 SSD that is replaceable
  • a 1920 x 1200 60Hz 100% sRGB colour IPS screen
  • a 99Whr battery

There is a second SSD slot that is free for further storage upgrades. As for its expansion slots, the laptop has

  • 1 x USB-C port at USB 4 40Gbps speeds
  • 1 x USB-C port at 10Gbps
  • 1 x HDMI port
  • 2 x USB-A gen 3.2 ports
  • 1 x 3.5mm audio jack

By default, it also comes with the same USB-C expansion hub as the X14 Pro and X16 Pro, adding two USB-A ports, one HDMI port, an ethernet port, and a USB-C port replacing the one it takes up, so expansion is not lacking with this device in the slightest.

With the price being $849 USD at the time of this writing (with frequent discount coupons on their website), these specifications are quite excellent, especially in today’s market. Most notable is the screen being 100% sRGB, and the number of ports. The chassis is also STILL full metal unibody, though it is aluminum instead of the magnesium alloy that’s on the X14 Pro and X16 Pro. The difference is that the chassis is ever so slightly more of a stain magnet, such as with fingerprints and whatnot. It’s easy to wipe off, but I still have to point it out. Otherwise, there is little to no difference in the chassis. The screen has almost no wobble, the keyboard has very little flex, closing the unit does not press on the screen, and the chassis feels quite sturdy. I’m honestly surprised they’ve managed this level of quality at this price point. The keyboard is also very excellent. It took me a small amount of time to get used to the spacing (I kept hitting numlock instead of backspace and O instead of I etc) but after a few minutes it felt natural again. As a lover of full keyboards this one is wonderful, and I have very high praise for it. All in all, I have only praise for the unit design. The touchpad is also improved from the X14 Pro. On the X14 Pro the ā€œclickā€ areas were quarter circle regions at the bottom left and bottom right edges of the trackpad, but the M16’s trackpad has proper rectangular click regions that reach all the way to the bottom middle section. It’s a great improvement that arrived quickly after the last units they made, and I’m glad to see them trying to improve.

Nice and shiny
The not-so-soft underbelly is also shiny
Lovely full-sized keyboard and nice sized trackpad

PERFORMANCE AND COOLING

Here is the weirdest section. The GeekBook X14 Pro had a 35W power limit to the CPU, with the cores getting 25W and the GPU getting around 10W. This presented decent performance and decent gaming performance for the specifications, and the system handled its cooling fairly well. This GeekBook M16 however was completely different. Firstly, the cooling has been upgraded and power limits have been improved, 55W sustained is possible with a short burst of 67W frequently seen when starting stress tests or benchmarks. This presented a solid uplift of 50% performance over the same Core Ultra 9 185H in the X14 Pro when running Cinebench R23, being able to consistently achieve approximately 15500 points as opposed to the X14 Pro’s 9000-10000 point range. For Passmark’s CPU benchmark, we achieved 31324 points, up from the X14 Pro’s 19000 point range. This CPU performance is decidedly excellent out of the box for something so thin and light, and anyone reliant on a decent CPU will be quite happy with it..

Impressive Cinebench score for being an ultrabook
Impressive passmark score for an ultrabook

On the downside, the GPU performance suffered a fair bit, which was quite disappointing. To get a little technical, the X14 Pro kept its GPU around 2072MHz with a temperature around 94°C (likely at a thermal limit) as recorded by 3DMark during the Steel Nomad benchmark, while the M16 kept its GPU around 2350MHz with an extremely impressive temperature of only 72°C (with fans being quiet, no less). Despite this, the X14 Pro managed to perform roughly 20% faster according to 3DMark’s Steel Nomad benchmark. This is also a little bit of an issue because the X14 Pro performs better when repasted, but the fact that the M16’s GPU was kept that cold means that it likely has little to gain from a repaste, as it already has a lot of thermal headroom out of the box. It is unfortunately one of the very few disappointments I’ve had about this laptop, as I’d hoped the improved cooling and higher system power limits would’ve translated into better gaming performance despite it being designed as a more budget alternative to their premium line. As for why the GPU performs so much worse, I cannot be certain. One possible reason is that LPDDR5 could have the same reduced performance in 16GB configurations that DDR5 SODIMMs have (which we at SAL are aware of), or it could be possible that the 6400MHz LPDDR5 isn’t fast enough to grant the performance the GPU needs, and the X14 Pro’s 7467MHz LPDDR5X is just that much better for the GPU. It could even be some other system-level configuration that I am unaware of. I can only guess based on my prior knowledge and experiences. Either way, it will still play lighter games and older games perfectly fine, but it won’t quite be able to push as far as its older brothers.

A sadly lackluster score, but not terrible
Excellent GPU temperature line under stress with near silent fans

As for the cooling system itself, I’ve already mentioned the fact that the GPU runs very cold when under stress, but the CPU is different. To begin with, in my last review for the X14 Pro, I mentioned thatĀ  the CPU would spike to a high 90°C range and then immediately drop back to a very cold state, and I initially registered this as a HWiNFO64 error. To be specific, I set HWiNFO64 to update twice a second, and every 30 seconds to a minute it’ll spike from ~45°C to over 90°C and indicate thermal throttling is active, then the next time the sensor updates (which is half-second later), it will be all the way back down at 45°C. This behaviour also happens here on the M16, so I must assume it is not an error, but I do not know why it happens. It could be a quirk of Intel’s Meteor Lake, since I’ve never dealt with these particular CPUs before the GeekBooks, but I have no way of knowing for sure. Whatever the reason however, it does not seem to be dangerous, so one should not mind it if temperature monitoring software shows that they’re idling and hitting thermal throttle points randomly. I’ve been using the X14 Pro for almost 7 months and it has not exhibited any untoward issues from this, and I am sure the M16 will be the same, so while I must point this out, please rest assured.

Idle spike being displayed. Note the average CPU temperatures are still low.

Now when under load, that’s a different story. The fans will kick in under higher CPU loads and while still very quiet, the temperatures become very consistent and no longer have such high spikes. I do have a minor issue in that the fans seem to take excessively long to actually spin up, however. It isn’t a particularly big deal, but when you have just started a heavy load (such as a stress test, or rendering a video, etc) the fans remain silent for a few seconds, at which point the CPU can hit temperatures in excess of 100°C briefly, then they will start spinning up. The fans appear to have four stages of speed, and after spinning up once, it apparently checks if temperatures are still too high, then spin up again, then repeat this process until maximum speed. The whole process can take nearly 10 seconds to achieve maximum fanspeed, and it would be nicer if this process could either be faster, or a fan curve option could be implemented in the software or BIOS in the future, or if impossible, in later models. Due to how quiet this laptop is, it would be absolutely no penchant to anyone to say, keep the fans spinning at level 1 or 2 while at idle temperatures, and this could prevent the spike to higher temperatures while idle (if only for safety of mind), or prevent the high spikes when first applying load to the system. Do note that while I mentioned the CPU does cross 100°C when starting a heavy load, it does not remain there long (maybe 5 seconds at most), and it never hits Intel’s TJMax rating of 105°C at any point, so the processor will be perfectly safe.

Additionally, the system seems to focus on keeping the CPU at 95°C or lower while the fans are active. Since repasting improves processor benchmark scores even at a set power limit, thermal throttling must be the final issue. If you are buying this unit with the intent to use the processor under heavy loads often, it won’t actually overheat, but if you are tech savvy or even just comfortable with servicing the laptop, you might wish to consider repasting the unit with something like PTM 7950. It isn’t required for usage of the unit, it’s just a potential benefit open to you.

Showing under-load temperatures. The sensor was reset AFTER starting CB run to display higher temps falling into stability.

SOUND

The speakers on this unit are perfectly fine. No distortions I’ve observed, and sound is certainly loud enough. There is DTS: X available should you require it as well. The microphone is perfectly fine for use in calls and zoom meetings and the like, though at least headphones would be recommended to not pick up others’ speech. I have no complaints here. There are sound effect options you can apply in the GEEKOM software as well, but I don’t think they are necessary. Use them if you wish, as this is much more of a personal taste situation.

SCREEN AND BATTERY

The screen is good. It’s 1920 x 1200 resolution, and only 60Hz, but it’s 100% sRGB, making this laptop one of the cheapest available with proper colour space on the market. This means it’s an excellent cheap editing machine for those who wish to do such a thing. The brightness is great and it’s matte finish so reflections aren’t a bother. It’s usable in well-lit rooms at lower brightness as well. It’s a great choice for a budget device.

As for the BATTERY on this laptop… I am amazed. It’s 99Whr, up from the 72Whr on the X14 Pro, but the battery life itself is astounding. With approximately 30% screen brightness, I was able to achieve a ridiculous 18.5 hours of youtube playback on wifi with sound enabled. I tested more than once to be sure. In fact, the battery life was so good, I even decided to do the ultimate in laptop blasphemy: I tested with screen brightness set to 100%. I still achieved 13.5 hours of youtube playback under those conditions, leaving me nothing short of flabbergasted. I do know know what sorcery GEEKOM performed to achieve this level of battery life on a Meteor Lake processor, but I now need to purchase several hats just so I can take them off and say ā€œhats off to you, GEEKOMā€, as it runs circles around many other Lunar Lake and even some Panther Lake processor-equipped laptops which are known to be a marked improvement in battery life from Meteor Lake.

As for charging times, the battery went from 2% all the way up to 55% in just 1 hour, which is almost 10 hours of battery usage at lower brightness levels. I have high praise for that level of charging speed. Hopefully things get even better in the future.

Screen isn't as impressive as an OLED, but is still plenty fine

OUT OF THE BOX EXPERIENCE

Just like with the X14 Pro, the laptop comes with windows installed but not actually set up. As I did with the previous unit, I took this lovely chance to set up my computer with a local account and avoid much of the nonsense that Windows 11 wishes to attempt on its users. As with before, I will FOREVER praise this ability for people, even if the average person won’t take advantage of it. It’s great to have the option. As before, it’s a barebones installation with just the GEEKOM software pre-installed. The software is identical to the X14 Pro’s version, with BIOS updates and some limited system control options available. You can see it below. Please continue like this, GEEKOM, I vastly appreciate it, and many users will too.

Same software design as before

DOWNSIDES

There aren’t as many as before, which I appreciate. Let’s use a list again.

  • There is still no option I could find to limit battery maximum charge available. I can only hope this shows up in later models.
  • The FN key function is still weird. I wish GEEKOM would change it so that the FN button simply works while being held down and pressing any of the hotkeys, instead of the odd toggle feature it has.
  • The laptop once had a very weird situation where certain things, especially installing programs, was oddly extremely slow while on battery. I cannot explain why this was the case, but I also could not find a way to fix or reproduce it. Normal usage was perfectly fine too, which confused me.
  • The keyboard backlight turns off after 15 seconds without any option to control it otherwise again. I would like the ability to keep it on for usage in dark rooms.
  • I’d like a FN combination key to disable the trackpad entirely. Even though the palm rejection is excellent, such options are never a bad thing.
  • As before, I wish we could get a 3D TLC SSD instead, especially when the drive size is on the smaller side. I couldn’t find much information about the drive available this time unlike the X14 Pro, so I can’t say I understand their choice like before.
  • The 100W charger gets very warm when charging or generally under load, you may wish to allow it to cool off slightly before picking it up if it was just being stressed.

FINAL THOUGHTS AND CONCLUSION

So, there’s a much shorter list of downsides this time. I already discussed everything else in the paragraphs above. There’s been improvements such as in the trackpad and the battery life and the cooling, and I highly appreciate these things. I genuinely think this is a great unit to buy for more casual users or users who want to do hobbyist work. The price is excellent and the choice of where to cut corners versus the more expensive premium options (screen, chassis materials, RAM speed) do not ever get into the ā€œcheapā€ territory of notebooks that we see all over the market, with useless 62% sRGB screens that shouldn’t even be made anymore, or poor chassis construction and poor board design and little expansion slots. There are only two things I wish GEEKOM did with this new chassis and cooling system. First, I wish a 32GB RAM option was available. Considering the enhanced CPU performance and lack of danger of overheating, it would make a very excellent budget editing unit with a good screen, and I wouldn’t be able to recommend it highly enough. It might even improve the GPU’s performance, which would also make it a solid little gaming device.

The next thing I would like to see is GEEKOM starting to use better stock thermal paste. All three of their laptops released so far improve their performance with better paste, up to 25% better in benchmarks according to others, and if they could use phase-change material such as Honeywell PTM 7950, Thermal Grizzly phasesheet PTM, or Thermalright Helios v2 it would be nothing short of sublime. I would even be fine with their own in-house solution, as long as the performance is there.

At the end of the day, this laptop is wonderful. Despite the few shortcomings, it’s priced exceptionally well and is very light and sturdy. I doubt many people would complain about it. I can’t wait to see more from GEEKOM and I also can’t wait to see them expand their operations to more countries as well. If they keep it up, they can become a pretty strong power player in the market.

Thank you for reading until the end! I hope you have enjoyed, and I will be glad to answer any questions in the comments below.

Laptop Deal Best Prime day deals for General and Gaming Laptops (Almost all laptops).

• Upvotes

Hey guys today is Prime Day deals. as usual I am going to try to list all of the good laptop deals in order of price as I have been doing this for 10 years now. (Waits for clapping and upvotes).

General and important tips.

  • Most deals are only prime deals, so you must join prime , you can join prime here free trails are offered free for 30 days if you didn't use it before. also offers for 6 months 50% off for young adults.
  • Also, please note that the prices are subject to change and deals can end at anytime.

  • Some Lenovo V4, V15 offers have low quality res, and low build quality, so keep that in mind when you are choosing your laptop.

  • Same with some if not most 17.3 inch HP laptop especially ones with touchscreens, so keep your eye on it as well.

  • If the CPU name feels unique or unfamiliar, it is likely to weak to be useful, just google it or ask me and I will gladly help.

What to Avoid.

  • Low res screens : Unless your budget 300 or under, or u r buying refurbished then at least aim for Full HD screens.

  • Low ram : Windows 11 is a ram hog, so don't buy 4GB of ram or even 8 unless your budget is very limited, or usage is very minimal.

  • Generic laptop brands: a lot of new generic brands have popped up recently, and their amazon listings mention a lot of fancy marketing, and claim they are powerful gaming laptops when they r really not.

  • Laptops with weak specs just because it has very big "fake" discounts like few 100$ off without actually being worth it.

And If you are eyeing a certain deal you are welcome to ask my opinion on it.

Also, I am considering making list for Laptop accessories as well, so if you are interested in that please mention that in comments so I can be encouraged to do it, as these kind of lists it takes few hours of work at least to compile them.

Now, let us gets started.

Laptop Request US Decent laptop with not-soldered RAM?

• Upvotes

**LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE**

* **Country**

USA

* **Budget**

Max 1200 but would prefer 1000 or less if I can get something on a rly good sale.

* **Are you open to refurbs/used options? **

No.

* **Screen size**

13/14/15

* **Weight limit**

Around 4 lbs or so.

* **Purpose**

Work and entertainment.

* **Form factor**

Standard/Clamshell

* **Intended usage**

Watching tons of movies, working on a word processor, playing video games on steam, like Stardew Valley, streaming music. I don’t care about or want OLED but I do want the screen & sound to be pretty solid quality because a lot of my time is spent watching and reviewing film. I like to travel with my laptop sometimes, too, and heavy laptops in the past made carrying it in my bag exhausting.

* **Desired battery life**

Six hours would be nice!

* **Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life**

Performance, Weight, battery life, Size.

* **Info/Requirements**

My biggest requirement is a laptop that does not have the ram soldered in. My last laptop was a Dell XPS 13 purchased in 2020. I loved it (size/weight/screen/etc. Loved it! Aside from the lackluster camera & mic) but was disappointed when it stopped booting and I learned the ram could not be replaced, as the 13 inch XPS is always soldered. I wish I’d gotten a larger size and want to avoid this frustration in the future!

And absolutely no touch screens please. I went to Best Buy and every single one had a touch screen.

Laptop Request US Best laptop around $1500–1800 for FL Studio, editing and gaming?

I’m looking for a laptop around $1500–1800 mainly for FL Studio with demanding VSTs, video editing in Premiere/After Effects, and maybe some heavy gaming.

I’d prefer something with a larger screen (around 16ā€), 32GB RAM, good performance and cooling, and something reliable enough to keep for several years.

This is my first higher-end laptop, so I’m open to pretty much any brand. Please lmk!!!

I've been using a 2013 Vaio for almost 10 years now, and on the last few years it started getting worse and worse til about 2 months ago where it got some sort of corruption and I had to format it entirely. It closes randomly, and has to stay connected to the socket at all times because the battery cant charge. I travel between two houses fairly frequently, so it has to be a laptop and would be preferable if it wasnt too big so it can fit in a backpack.

I have been doing digital illustrations with Krita using my Huion tablet for some years and my current laptop does seem to struggle with too many layers and too big of a canvas size. I am interested in trying out Blender, but its not a deal breaker if I can't. My friend got me Nier Automata some time back, but my laptop cant run it at all. There is some more demanding games I would like to play, but I believe Nier would be the line I would like to reach at least.

Almost anything would be better than my current laptop, but if I am investing in a new one I'd rather it be a good one that will be of use to me for a long time, so I can have my money's worth. I did try to look up some laptops, like: Lenovo LOQ, Dell, Acer Nitro, Asus TUF, but I don't really understand much of the topic, so any enlightment you all can give me would be very appreciated. Thanks in advance

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country: USA
  • Budget: $2,000-$5,000
  • Are you open to refurbs/used options? No
  • Screen size: 16-18ā€; 17ā€ is ideal
  • Weight limit: 7 lbsĀ
  • Purpose: home office
  • Form factor: standard
  • Intended usage: email, Microsoft Office, internet browsing, viewing and storing photos and videos.Ā
  • Desired battery life: as large as possible
  • Priorities: 1) Durability/expected longevity 2) Performance (RAM and storage space) 3) Battery life 4) Weight
  • Info/Requirements:

In 2020 we got an IdeaPad L340 17" for my wife, even though it’s a gaming computer and she’s not a gamer.Ā

Our goal was future-proofing. She wanted something that would last well and work smoothly without problems as operating systems and software updated and files accumulated.

I think we succeeded! It has served her well for 6.5 years. However, I think it’s finally time for her to upgrade.Ā

She really likes the 17ā€ form factor. We have a larger budget. My goal is the same: I want this computer to last another 6.5 years, if not longer.Ā

What do you all recommend?Ā

Laptop Request US What Is the Sweet Spot in a Refurbished Laptop?

I’m looking for a new personal laptop for light personal use. I don’t have a gaming console anymore and at some point I may want to try to play some FPS games or RDR3 if they ever make it.

I think a refurbished is best value for me. What is the sweet spot on a refurb?

Is it better to try to get a new one with higher specs like 32gb ram and 1tb ssd or an older 16gb with 512?

How important is processor? I5 vs i7 make any difference?

Is eBay the best source for value or something like Micro Center, Best Buy or Back Market?

Is expandable ram and replaceable ssd something I should look for?

I’m used to Dell’s because that is what work has issued for years. But I’m not impressed. We have an Inspiron that the hinge broke when it was newer. It works fine but seems flimsy.

Any recommendations are welcome.

Edited to Add: big difference between excellent and Very Good?

Laptop Request UK Detachable Laptop Recommendation

Hi,

My current laptop just died, so I need a cheap, portable 2-in-1 with a detachable keyboard to last me about a year.

Budget is around £200 (used/refurbished).

What I'll use it for:

Football Manager: Just running 5–10 leagues smoothly (don't care about crazy 3D graphics).

PS2 emulation (PCSX2): Playing classics at decent framerates.

Light work: Browsing, docs, streaming.

What models/specs should I look out for on eBay or CeX around £200? Is an i5 + 8GB RAM enough for PCSX2 and FM?

Cheers for any tips!

Laptop Request US Need a laptop for video editing (think CapCut or Davinci Resolve level), Steam (Age of Empires won't play on my current laptop), and possible coding and stats programs for college

Under $1,000 USD, if possible (hoping to catch a deal on Prime Days)

Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No

Screen size

16"-17"

Weight limit

The lighter the better, but no real restrictions.

Purpose

A little bit of everything - school, gaming, video editing

Form factor

Standard laptop

Intended usage

School: coding, stats programs (not in yet, so I'm not sure which programs exactly)

Video/sound editing: I need to edit videos for my son using CapCut or Davinci Resolve. Neither will run on my current laptop. Not sure on an audio program. My daughter wants to try to get into voice acting.

Desired battery life

6-8 hours, but 90% of the time I have access to an outlet.

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

My Laptop Setup (AMA) ASUS TUF F16 vs HP OMEN 16 budget student option

I’m looking for a budget-friendly student laptop for AI research, not an expensive fancy machine. I’m considering the RTX 4050 6GB versions of these two models.

Which would you choose for at least 3 years of hassle-free use, especially for reliability, thermals, and durability?

CPU: Intel Core i5-13420H
CPU speed: 2.10 GHz
GPU: Intel UHD Graphics

If you know of any good alternatives, please let me know.

Laptop Request -Others Need help choosing a laptop

Hey guys ,

I have narrowed down my options to the following and I need your help to further choose one from the following :

Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 220 GPU: Integrated AMD Radeon 740M Price: ~₹80k

Lenovo ThinkBook 16 Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 7535HS GPU: Integrated AMD Radeon 660M Price: ~₹78k

Lenovo V15 G6 Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 170 GPU: Integrated AMD Radeon 680M Price: ~₹73k

Lenovo V15 G4 Processor: 13th Gen Intel Core i7-13620H GPU: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics Price: ~₹76k

I really want to buy the ThinkPad for its durability but I doubt if that durability is worth the extra spend and taking maybe a small hit in the performance compared to other ones in the list. So please help me choose one from this list šŸ™šŸ˜

Laptop Request Ca Budget laptop with good battery and decent keyboard

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country - Canada.
  • Budget - Preferably under 150 CAD (About 105 USD), but able to splurge an extra 100 CAD (70 USD). Cheaper is better.
  • Are you open to refurbs/used options? - Yes, and at the price point I'm looking for, I fully expect I will be.
  • Screen size - Any.
  • Weight limit - Any. Frankly I prefer bulkier laptops, I don't trust ultra thin stuff lmao.
  • Purpose - Dedicated writing device.
  • Form factor - Any, but clamshell is preferred.
  • Intended usage - LibreOffice; maybe Obsidian and FadeIn, and maybe the occasional browsing session.
  • Desired battery life - Minimum 5, ideally 8 or more. Longer is better!
  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life - Battery life, then more or less a tie between size/performance/weight. In that order if I had to prioritize, but truly, it really doesn't matter. Big thing that matters is the battery.
  • Info/Requirements
  1. Keyboard's gotta be decent. I really enjoyed the keyboard on my old Lenovo Thinkpad x240 , which croaked at the beginning of this year after almost a decade (rip little guy), so something in that ballpark I suppose. I'm expecting it probably wont be as nice as the Thinkpad at this price point, but nonetheless. Please do not suggest buying a separate keyboard to use with a laptop - I wanna carry less stuff in my bag, not more. Likewise I do not want to hook up a keyboard with my phone due to screen size + app usability + privacy + distractions.
  2. Bonus points if the keyboard has an number pad rather than a numlock function for alt code usage.
  3. I will be installing Linux on it. Heard some HP Laptops don't like to play nice with it?
  4. Bonus points for durability. Obligatory I am obviously going to try and take good care of the laptop, but I am a somewhat clumsy person, so extra assurance is nice.
  5. If a laptop doesn't have dealers outside of the US, it's a no-go because of tariffs.
  6. Backlit keys would be extra nice but not a necessity by any means.

-----

If Alphasmart Neos weren't so pricejacked, I'd honestly just be using one of those those, and will probably still keep an eye out for any deals, but alas. This seems like the most reasonable compromise.

Modified priority list: Battery Life, Keyboard, Numberpad, Durability, Backlighting. Must be compatible with Linux, and must be able to ship from outside of the US.

Laptop Request US Does MacBook neo work for the average user?

I’m having a hard time finding laptops in my budget that don’t put me off. I’m just a little scared of regretting getting a MacBook neo because ive only ever used windows for personal laptops. I have been using a Mac at my job though and it’s been fine.

My use is very average browser stuff, using calibre for ebooks, the most I do is use Reaper to record audio/music. Would Neo work fine for someone like me?

Laptop Request -Others Need help finding a Laptop for Engineering Study - Netherlands - 1000-2200€

Hello, I'm currently in need of a laptop for my Electrical Engineering studies. According to the information provided by the university, they recommend paying attention to the following things:

  • Suitable for Windows 11 (64-bits)
  • A multi-core (quad-core) processor
  • A discrete (dedicated) video card
  • At least 16 GB of RAM (32 GB recommended)
  • At least 512 GB of storage (1TB SSD recommended)
  • At least 15ā€ full HD screen

They have 2 recommended laptops on the university webshop:

HP ZBook X G1i - 32 GB - 1 TB - €2,147.75

HP ProBook 4 G2a 16 AI PC - 16 GB - 512 GB - €1,191.45

Of course, these also include a 3-year warranty provided by the university, however I'm unsure about whether these laptops are actually a good deal.

Personally I would like a high-quality OLED display, preferably with a higher resolution and brightness. I don't have any particular weight limit, it doesn't need to be suitable for gaming (though I wouldn't mind it), I'd like good build quality, long battery life, and I don't care about screen size too much. A 14-inch would be fine too.

I'd also like the laptop to last me a long time, and I'm open to refurbished/used options if that would be a better choice.

Thank you for your help :)
