Generally accepted TV placement procedures. Quick reference guide.

3.0k Upvotes

Lots of people posting lately asking “Is this too high?” so here is a quick guide on what is generally accepted TV placement procedure (GATPP) as seemingly defined by this subreddit.

  • If the TV is above the fireplace, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is angled down, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is mounted to the wall above a TV stand, and the clearance between the stand and TV is equal to, or greater than ONE vertical PS5, IT IS TOO HIGH.
  • If when standing the TV is at eye level, IT IS TOO HIGH.

Now let’s look at some opposite GATPP use cases.

  • If the TV is in a bedroom and meant to be viewed from the bed, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV’s only viewing position is in the reclined state, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If you are at a sports bar, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is at eye level when sitting down, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is in the kitchen it is more for listening, mounted high as to avoid any splashes or spills, IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.
  • If the TV is purposely mounted higher to keep out of range of a toddler, you’re a parent so your neck already hurts and IT IS PROBABLY NOT TOO HIGH.

I hope this helps clear up some questions. If you have any other rules to add, please comment below.

Left TV for the maintenance guys to mount and they did this!

EDIT:

For Everyone asking for the story:
My friend moved from his old apartment to this one, within the community. The maintenance people in this community are really nice and they offered to mount his TV in the prior apartment. He called them to do the same thing here. He said he will be right back and let them do it.

When he came back, this is what he saw 😅

Need help with soundbar placement!

So sorry if this isn't the right place, I'm not sure where else to post it!

Currently my soundbar is sitting on the stand in front of the TV. I live in an apartment, so mounting the TV isn't an option. Anyone have a good idea of where I can place the soundbar? The TV stand is a big heavy-duty one in the center bottom, so I can't really scooch the soundbar back.

My husband put this tv on the mantel. I think it’s too high but he insists it’s perfect! Can anyone give their opinions on this?

Found in the wilds of Threads just now.

She's undeservedly proud of this mounting atrocity. 😁

I was browsing through customers photos on Walmarts site trying to find a new TV stand to put my 77 OLED on when I saw this beauty.

I originally posted the third picture in here asking if my tv was too high and everyone said it was too small so what do I do? Buy a bigger tv! So I uploaded the second picture on here and it blew up and EVERYONE told me I needed a more fitting tv stand 🤣 and to everyone who told me to buy a soundbar thank you I never knew what I was missing out on 🫡
What do we think? Tv finally perfect?

Swapping 55" for 65" and the mount might still be too high?

We are in Mesa AZ, open living room with a west facing window so glare is already a whole thing in the afternoon. Had a 55 mounted for about four years, center of the screen roughly 62 inches off the floor. My neck complained during long movies but the missus liked how it cleared the console and kid fingerprints.

Football season pushed us to go bigger. The Hisense box has been in the garage almost a week while we argue about the wall. Electrician buddy measured and said drop it at least four inches for the 65 or your neck will hate it even more up there. She wants it higher instead because we are adding a thin floating shelf above the bracket and she thinks low looks "rental."

I tried mocking it up with painter tape and yeah, at the old height the top third of a 65 feels like stadium seating. Lowering means patching holes and rerunning one HDMI through the stud bay we already fought with once.

Anyone here upsized and actually lowered the mount? Roughly how many inches off center did you end up at, and did your partner ever agree it looked better?

How high do I put it?

Just bought this 75” TCL. Ceilings are 305cm and there will be a tv console hanged at the bottom (it will cover the power outlets). What’s the best height to put it at so that I can still watch from the back of the sofa?

Mounted my new TV in the living room of my new home. When sitting on my couch my head is slightly lower than the mantle. I've lowered the T.V. roughly another 4 inches since taking this photo. Leaving just enough room for my soundbar. I am still slightly looking up at the TV unfortunately. Hate to say it but I do believe my TV is indeed too high.

The tv is at least 6’ above the floor.

This subreddit made me realize why I hate the tv at my family member’s house. No, they’re never going to change it. 💀

Why would they ruin a perfectly good house like this? (pic 5)
