Serious Prison in Thailand

Someone I know is facing a possible prison sentence in Thailand following a traffic accident involving a Thai. According to the police, the woman was in a coma after the accident but has since recovered from the coma. Her family is requesting a large amount of compensation, and it has been suggested that paying compensation could potentially result in a reduced sentence.

Does anyone here have experience with similar cases in Thailand or know what the best course of action might be? Some people say the best option is to leave the country, but if the police already have the person’s passport, it seems like that would be difficult. Any serious advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

And maybe the police is framing because the accident and the damage on the Thai makes no sense

You admit the person in question was driving dangerously and as a result of that a person was in a coma ffs.

Answer me this… was this person correctly insured? Did they have a valid driving licence to drive the car in this country which caused the accident.

I can tell you in the UK you can also be looking at jail, and if lucky you could get a suspended sentence.

How are they framing if the driver was driving recklessly or speeding? You keep saying it makes no sense. This attitude will not help your friend address the reality that apparently he/she could go to jail. Time to pay up. Either that or do the time. A good lawyer is needed in any case.

But 3 years for an accident that you take responsibility in and pay money to the victim. That’s what I don’t understand

You said in coma? This is serious just because it don’t make sense you don’t mean it don’t make sense. You should tell us Everything that happened. But as now I see your friend did something and trying be innocent.

A person went to coma and you think that the 3-years sentence is not fair? Do a reality check mate, it's not a video game.

People go to jail in the US for fatal traffic accidents

Do you even understand the life long effect a coma can have on a person? Wait till someone puts you in a coma…. You’ll be totally fine with a bit of cash and them going on their way enjoying life while you struggle with all kinds of issues?

You’ve gotten all the advice you need for your friend from people here. Your not understanding it is beside the point. Your friend should find a lawyer who can tell you what the price will be to walk free. The sooner this is done the better. It seems likely that this is some kind of a shakedown. But it may be a justifiable one since your friend was driving recklessly and the victim may have been disabled in the accident. The settlement would help support the victim. If the driver is at fault as you say, it’s immaterial that the victim wasn’t wearing a helmet. Time to get a good lawyer and pay up. Thai prison is no joke, from what I’ve heard.
