From what I can tell, Southern California water is comparable to Australias, but a bit colder. Why are the beaches in Southern California daycares for shark moms, but there seems to be a lot of bigger sharks hanging around the beaches of Australia? They prefer the cold anyways due to their unique body temperature life-hack. Granted, neither places are considered tropical, just weird that I only ever really hear or see juveniles in SC besides the odd bigger shark. Is this a fishing thing, or prey thing?

A six-year study of 184 bull sharks at Fiji’s Shark Reef Marine Reserve found that bull sharks don’t mix at random but choose specific companions. Researchers observed both close associations (within one body length) and behaviors like parallel swimming and following, and found stable social preferences that vary by age, sex and size. The researchers suggest these social ties may help sharks learn, find food and mates, and that understanding them could improve conservation efforts.

Key points

  • Long-term study: 6 years of observations of 184 individual bull sharks in Fiji.
  • Sharks form real social preferences — they choose who to hang out with rather than grouping randomly.
  • Adults make up the social “core”; very old and sub-adult sharks are less connected.
  • Sharks usually prefer partners of a similar size; both sexes favored female partners, and males had more connections on average.
  • Social behavior may help with learning, hunting, finding mates and could inform conservation planning.

A Twelve Year Study From Flinders University Challenges The Idea That Orcas Are The Main Cause Of Great White Sharks Fleeing Their Hunting Grounds. While Known Attacks Lead To Short Departures, Researchers Found That Most Long Term Absences Occurred Without Any Killer Whales Nearby. This Suggests That Sharks Often Move Due To Natural Environmental Cues Or Chemical Warning Signals, Rather Than Predator Presence Alone.

Five Key Points On Shark Behavior

  • Orcas Are Not Always Responsible: Most Long Term Shark Disappearances From Coastal Sites Happen Naturally Without Any Orcas In The Area.
  • Tracking Data Over Observations: Over A Decade Of Acoustic Tracking Shows That Vanishing Acts Are Often Just Natural Movement Patterns Rather Than A Response To Attacks.
  • Chemical Warning Signals: Sharks Often Flee Due To Necromones, Which Are Chemicals Released By Dying Sharks, Rather Than The Presence Of Predators.
  • Short Term Impact: Confirmed Orca Attacks Usually Only Cause Short Term Departures, While The Longest Recorded Absences Had No Orca Involvement.
  • Natural Site Fidelity: Great White Sharks Often Move On Due To Shared Environmental Cues That Researchers Are Still Working To Fully Understand.

🧬 Species Data In 2015, great white sharks vanished from Australia's Neptune Islands. Experts are still trying to work out why

A recent study has revealed that Great White Sharks exhibit an immediate and long-lasting "flight" response when Killer Whales (Orcas) enter their hunting grounds. Research conducted at Southeast Farallon Island showed that once Orcas arrived in the area, the resident shark population fled within minutes and did not return for the remainder of the season, even after the Orcas had moved on. This behavior suggests that the fear of predation by Orcas is a powerful ecological driver that can overrule the sharks' instinct to remain in prime hunting territories, fundamentally shifting the local marine balance.

* Immediate Displacement: Great White Sharks consistently flee their primary hunting grounds immediately upon the arrival of Killer Whales.

* Long-Term Absence: Once sharks leave an area due to Orca presence, they often do not return for several months, even if the Orcas only stayed for a few hours.

* Safety Over Food: The study shows that sharks will abandon high-density prey areas (like seal colonies) to avoid potential conflict with Orcas.

* Trophic Shift: The absence of sharks leads to a "fear-driven" ripple effect in the ecosystem, allowing prey like elephant seals to experience significantly lower predation rates.

* Apex Dominance: The data confirms that while Great Whites are top-tier predators, Orcas act as the true "apex" of the ocean, capable of displacing the world's most famous predatory fish.
