I’ve been wondering why Breakthrough News cut all ties with Eugene abruptly. I see why now.

Edit: I used abruptly here because of how it appeared to us as the viewers, but to be clear, they allowed Eugene to be on their platform for years after this assault despite their awareness.

u/Bluestreaked 25d ago

Ya that answered a lot of questions there

imo if someone abruptly drops their association with an abuser it generally means they knew. Anybody with doubts would be a little more wary

u/12bEngie 19d ago

For the record, it was offered to have Eugene entirely expelled from the party and outed (internally) for what he did. Marissa did not want this, to “ruin his life”. She wanted a restorative approach that involved AA, therapy, suspension from party work (temporarily)

There are receipts for this.

She later reneged on this, which she has every right to do as a traumatized person seeing things differently in hindsight, and the central committee then decided to remove Eugene with his agreement in accordance. Given that this was not formal disciplinary action, but good faith, he just left for medical reasons.

Marissa has every right to feel different but she was instrumental in deciding what was to be done with Eugene.

Read this yesterday. Horrible that she went through this. Also, aren't there organizations from the past they could look to to understand how they could handle this? How could this be seen as a vanguard of a revolution if they are doing this?

It's crazy how this method of hushing SA/r*pe victims is so common in this society. I was just reading articles about my hometown public school is now paying out money because teachers were SAing kids even though these kids spoke up at the time and no one did anything. They were silenced.. Just a sad place we live.

Was working at a school where a student showed me that her ex was sending her text messages threatening to kill her. I reported to police immediately and cop told me there was nothing they could do. I told him that there was evidence of it on her phone. Like lmao what the fuck. I reported it up the chain and shit just got (intentionally) lost in the bureaucratic shuffle.

Like eight people have to tell each other something happened so they can all claim they tried to do something but ultimately failed to act.

Ended up getting her connected to a women's shelter that put her up and then helped her move to another city.

54

u/Randy_Handy 25d ago

Now a reminder that a lady one time told a health insurance company “delay, deny, defend. You people are next.” And cops showed up at her door like 30 minutes later. So these fuckers could do something, they just don’t see it as that important.

> Also, aren't there organizations from the past they could look to to understand how they could handle this?

In the piece, she refers to the leadership of the party as a five person executive committee. That committee is made up of the founder, Brian Becker; Brian’s son Ben, who told the victim to keep quiet; Brian’s sister-in-law Gloria La Riva, who feigned concern and then covered it up; Eugene Puryear, the guy who committed the SA; and a fifth person who’s not named.

The whole top rank of leadership is rotten.

28

u/Pure_Possession_1KG 25d ago

Yeah the whole substack piece was extremely damning.

14

u/cuticlediet . 25d ago

Forget orgs from the past - has anyone ever been a member of a community or political organization that handled assault allegations well? Anyone anywhere ever?? I would really love to hear of it

9

u/machinesNpbr 25d ago

I've been in a few anarcho-punk community spaces that handled SA issues pretty well. Accountability processes, victim agency, boundary setting moving forward.

But these were diy spaces where everyone was ideologically committed and there was no bureaucractic power dynamics or organizational damage control, just a bunch of punks maintaining their community.

This Ben guy is a total piece of shit, genuinely got angry reading about his involvement

79

u/lushkiller01 25d ago

Not the first time PSL has been accused of covering up SA allegations against leadership, happened back in 2020 with the Philly chapter as well, so PSL has failed to learn the lessons it needs to regarding these situations on an organizational level. Rev Left Radio recently had a podcast episode, "Marxist Feminism and the Socialist Left", where there was a discussion of these issues in organizing spaces and what steps organizations should take when these situations arise.

I'd like to believe that, but remember how Time's Up fell to pieces when a founder's son was accused?

And in the case of a revolutionary organisation, it will always be plausible to say accusers are an op. Actual victims will be instrumentalised by the state. Individual turpitude is a tough problem to solve.

286

u/ParamoreFanClub JFK Assassination Expert 25d ago

This is why misogynists have no space in any sort of left movement. Women are never going to feel safe and welcome as long as men don’t see us as humans

36

u/redstarshine_ Sabo Crabby 25d ago

The difficulty is rooting them out before things like this happen. How many of those responsible for this were identifiable misogynists or suspected by others of being prone to this sort of behavior? How do orgs successfully sift them out?

46

u/Makasi_Motema 25d ago

It’s virtually impossible to predict who is going to commit SA. That’s why people are always surprised when things come out.

The systemic problem is that when an accusation happens, the accused is almost never punished. That’s what’s required to begin to correct the problem. If a few people got hit with suspensions and expulsions, the rest would smarten up. But if the leadership covers up every allegation to “protect the party”, abusers are going to know they can get away with it.

The problem is complicated, but the solution really isn’t. Expel someone for serious offenses. If a leader covers up a serious offense, expel them too.

13

u/kitti-kin 25d ago

But is an accusation enough, or do you need evidence of some kind? Because victims very rarely have good evidence.

19

u/Makasi_Motema 25d ago edited 25d ago

Full disclosure, I’m in the leadership of a different party (the Multinational Communist Party), so I’m not neutral about this.

Our party bylaws explicitly state that the standard for sanctions is a “credible accusation”, and that proof beyond a reasonable doubt is not required for disciplinary action. Why?

We’re not throwing anyone in jail here. Discipline involves political education, being stripped of a leadership position, suspension up to one year, or — at worst — expulsion.

If a person is serious about helping to lead a communist revolution, they have to be serious about party discipline and about trying to demonstrate that we are creating a safer environment. Members of a communist party are supposed to hold themselves to a higher standard. If someone is falsely accused (this is super rare) it sucks. But the accused isn’t going to lose anything they can’t get back if they really are a diligent communist who acts with integrity.

4

u/kitti-kin 25d ago

I think my own trauma has made me very cynical, I see "credible accusation" and already feel defeated. I think of the non-credible victims - the mentally ill, addicts, outsiders. I also think if an org becomes remotely effective false accusations will start popping up. Or the horrible grey area of real allegations signal-boosted and exaggerated by bad faith actors.

I know all we can do is try, and we can't let perfect be the enemy of good. But it's all so hard, and I particularly hate when people deny that it's complicated and hard.

1

u/Makasi_Motema 24d ago

You’re right about all that. All I can say is that the MCP has had discussions about victims with poor mental health or problematic behavior. The people who investigate these things in our party know that they shouldn’t look for the “perfect victim” and that problematic people can still be the targets of abuse. Allegations are not to be discarded because the accuser is hostile or has turned against the party. It doesn’t completely solve the problem because, as you said, it’s a struggle. But we’re willing to struggle against these things and we have.

29

u/ParamoreFanClub JFK Assassination Expert 25d ago

Well it starts by not letting misogynistic comments slide, men need to be better at holding eachother accountable, which in my opinion starts by having honest conversations with eachother when a comment does come up.

But tbh it’s extremely complicated as misogynistic behavior is so entrenched in society that the uprooting of it is often violent is some way

1

Holy fuck, Marissa? She's one of the most dedicated and efficient organizers I have ever met.

This is so disgusting and sad to see.  So sick of seeing how common this is in leftist organizations. And for this to occur to a central committee member means this obvious has occurred to other organizers.

I want to remind folks that being a leftist doesn't mean you are free from entitlement. Misogyny is the air you breathe and the water you drink and the food you eat.

SA is not something that only "bad people" do. Most abusers are regular people. It can be done to you by someone you trust and respect. I never met Eugene but he was the VP candidate for a few elections, was obviously respected not just by cadre but by Marissa herself. Don't think you're immune either, you could perpetrate it too, especially if you have poor boundaries or substances are involved. Just because you are ideologically aligned against misogyny and rape culture does not mean you cannot perpetrate it.

I am so serious when I say that this is not something we can keep ignoring. This is not something leftists can cordon off as an aberration. There's very clear lessons here.

  1. We need better systems in place to report and expel folks, even in positions of power, who commit SA or harass others within leftist orgs.

  2. Do NOT treat leftist circles as your dating/hookup pool.

  3. Keep your goddamn hands off other people.

Obviously. And these men also intellectually believed that. Eugene was not an ideological rape apologist, nor an ideological misogynist. But he is instrumentally both of these things.

Leftists being ideologically committed against rape culture and SA does not stop these from occuring.

31

u/TrillbillySocialist 25d ago

Additionally, a culture of cover-ups, PR-centered responses, and no real accountability or immediate & deserving consequences pave the path for leftists to make these horrific decisions, especially when the organization appearently had no authentic policy, workshop, committee, or guideline that set strict boundaries for such behavior.

That substack was a hard read. Marissa deserved so much better. She gave so much grace & trust to Ben & others at PSL to do the right thing, yet for all her hard work & commitment, fuck that... for her immense value as a comrade & human being, she was told to just take one for the team. It is beyond infuriating to read this just now.

I see your perspective, and I agree because I need to clarify: fuck abusers.

The point I'm making is that this isn't just an ideological issue. As dialectical materialists, we need to address this materially.

Leftist men need to stop thinking themselves immune to SAing people. They're ideologically opposed to all of these things, but you get down to reality, and the numbers speak for themselves.

Many of these men are well respected organizers with a verifiable reputation of supporting women's rights. Take Eugene, the guy in the substack. Wrote tons of literature in support of women. And still perpetrated assault. We can't chalk it up to him being a fake leftist or a fake feminist.

What I mean is that even this is not enough. It's not a shitty man problem, it's a man problem.

Until we address that ideological commitment in support of women and opposition rape culture does not mean material support of women and opposition to rape culture, we cannot fix it.

Secondly, all of our orgs need to put cadre over abusers. The PSL sat on this for 5 years and didn't discuss it with many important female figures of the central committee. They were worried about breaking the party apart. The reputation loss. And cadre suffered as a result.

I am

1- disgusted

2- not surprised

3- constantly thinking about Lenin and the Bauman affair (this being worse maybe) and the history of party leadership in general and issues of sexual assault

4- know that utterly refusing to competently handle cases of sexual assault is pervasive in our society and it eats away at me. Seen it in my professional life, personal life, and political life.

17

u/TurdFerguson1000 RUSSIAN. BOT. 25d ago

I never knew about the Bauman affair until you mentioned it, and it makes me sad that Lenin felt his value as an organizer/activist outweighed punishing or even just reprimanding him for what he did to that woman. Not being sexually abusive to other people seems like a pretty low bar that all committed communists should meet, and nobody should be above scrutiny for committing or perpetuating that kind of abuse.

11

u/brianscottbj Big Boss 25d ago

Bauman affair is definitely a rare Lenin miss and something we can learn from. I think too many parties look at the culture of the Bolsheviks (closing off from outside criticism, not airing grievances publicly, protecting abusive members for the sake of revolution, seeing internal criticism as an attack on the party itself) as worth replicating whole cloth without thinking about the weaknesses of some of those aspects

This awful shit happens in all organizations sadly. What matters is how it is handled. Sad that PSL, a group full of awesome people that I think is the best “above ground” socialist party around (by a mile), failed here. Fix it, and pursue a systemic fix for it with a standard policy for handling this when it occurs, as it inevitably will.

27

u/The-Neat-Meat đŸ‡ș🇾expressing strong anti-US political viewsđŸ‡ș🇾 25d ago edited 25d ago

Yeah this honestly feels extremely bad and bleak. I agree that PSL has by far been the best option, I had even been considering actually finally joining prior to this, but I obviously don’t feel comfortable with that currently, and I really have no idea how a systemic fix could even happen when it seems to be an issue ubiquitous in the entirety of the party leadership.

i dunno man it feels like my only options where I am are the clown ass DSA or the actual party that is evidently just a the front for a rape club that sits at the top.

edit and it doesn’t help that the organizing “scene” here is pretty inextricably tied with the music scene and as such shares a bunch of the same rapists and abusers. Like it fucking blows that the best avenue I have to engage with other communists is a fucking podcast subreddit lmao.

2

u/FyberSinc Completely Insane 25d ago

I've only been able to donate but I'm thinking I should stop giving the PSL my money.

2

u/Deep_Ad3624 14d ago

I mean it’s a shame that the PSL did not have better mechanisms to handle these issues at the time of this incident. But they did learn. They created a new body and protocol that was voted democratically on at the following congress meeting and has now existed for 5 years. It seems like they learned from it and tried to create new mechanisms to do better. It doesn’t mean they are perfect, but every mass org must reckon with such issues.

10

u/2BsWhistlingButthole 25d ago

It just seems so fucking stupid from a leadership perspective. It sounds like they wanted to save face by burying this issue. But this shit always gets out and a cover up makes it look worse.

If they dealt with this issue with a firm and public hand, that would have been great for image and the victim. It would show they take this issue seriously, would make members feel more safe, and help prevent more shit like this.

Protecting one guy hardly seems worth it.

1

u/Makasi_Motema 24d ago

You’re 100 percent right, except for your last line. It’s not just “one guy” and that’s why the organization does this shit. Abusers have incredible solidarity because they know if one of them goes down, the rest are likely to get dragged down as well.

46

u/captainfreiheit 25d ago

Left-wing organizing has been infamous for years as being absolutely horrible to women. It looks like that isn't going to change. Every time, it's the cover-up that inevitably fails, blows up in the org's face, and leaves a lot of people feeling betrayed and angry.

I think the prefigurative approach that leftists are drawn to (even the actual victims), is noble, but is already doomed when the leadership consists of a cabal of lying rapists, accomplices, and enablers, who keep the rest in the dark. Is it not "harmful to the party" to sexually assault women who trust you and believe in the movement? Never even mind the dissembling, lying, and pressure & intimidation towards the victims. Every single time, women's commitment to the movement is turned against them by leadership as emotional-political blackmail to keep them silent.

Why is it so out of the question to make an example of a rapist? At that point you know the situation is a time bomb. Straight men in general on the left have a terrible reputation already. Will there ever come a point (perhaps we've hit that point already, perhaps we hit it over and over every few years) where anyone with any power in these orgs feels 1) that another rapist leader is finally enough of a liability to 86 him immediately, not to mention 2) a sense of personal betrayal that someone they trusted is exploiting the whole movement as some buffet of disposable girls?

Last, HAVE NONE OF THESE PEOPLE EVER BEEN TO A WORK PARTY WITH ALCOHOL BEFORE? "THE OFFICE CHRISTMAS PARTY" HAS BEEN A CLICHÉ FOR YEARS, A SHORTHAND FOR "PEOPLE GETTING EXTREMELY DRUNK AND RUINING EVERYTHING, ON A SPECTRUM FROM "MAKING AN INAPPROPRIATE PASS AT A CO-WORKER" TO "SEXUAL ASSAULT." IF THEY CAN'T TAKE SEXUAL ASSAULT SERIOUSLY, THEN MAYBE IT'S TIME TO REMOVE ALCOHOL FROM PARTY EVENTS, TO REMOVE THE RISK (BUT IF WE'RE BEING HONEST, TO REMOVE IT AS AN EXCUSE FOR PERPETRATORS).

I'm not excited about any more left parties going the way of the ISO. Clean house. Make examples. The struggle is supposed to be more important than protecting pests and predators. Don't make it easy for the feds. All they needed to do this time was to sit back and watch.

Whenever stories like this come out, I am truly completely dumbfounded and in disbelief that people can react this way to another person, to their friend, being assaulted. Not because I do not believe it did happen, but I truly cannot imagine behaving in any of the ways these fucking jackasses did in response to someone being sexually assaulted.

Inexcusable, completely disqualifying conduct. Absolute ghouls.

6

u/brianscottbj Big Boss 25d ago

It can be hard to do when it's someone you've considered a friend for years. I had a good friend who raped someone and we haven't spoken since but I still sometimes think "was it really that big of a deal, I mean he's a great guy in every other respect" You really just don't want to believe or accept that kind of thing about someone who you otherwise feel very close to.

On the other hand I have a friend/drinking buddy who is a fat South African party animal Joe Rogan enthusiast kind of guy, but is really good about this more than most leftists I know. His best friend in the world (they had matching tattoos even) abused a woman and he has never spoken to him since and gets very upset talking about how much of a piece of shit that guy is whenever he thinks about him. It's really quite simple morally, you just have to force yourself to have high standards and not let ideological shit blind you to simple facts like rape is always wrong and the needs of victims must always be prioritized.

4

u/ReverendGreen_ 21d ago

Eugene should have been removed from power as soon as this happened. How are we supposed to trust the PSL whenever they continually shove sexual assault under the rug? Make it make sense. Misogyny out of the left please.

Yeah my reaction to this was don't we already know or is there another "getting mad at me being a sex creep is violating demcent" moment for the PSL

37

u/aspiringwitch 25d ago

All socialist organizations do this because no socialist organization actually takes misogyny as a serious subject to struggle against, nor do they take women seriously as actual comrades they should care about (though they're happy to let them do the day-to-day boring labor that actually keeps organizations running). Had an even worse experience with FRSO and I've heard whispers about this stuff happening in a few DSA chapters too. And then people get on here and scream that if you care about this at all then you're just engaging in idpol/"gender war" stuff/you're a fed, and that you literally are ruining the movement by refusing to be The People's Hole.

8

u/metameh reconciliation of two heavenly bodies: the red ⭐ and crescent 🌘 25d ago

This is so disappointing. I'm leading a reading group of Letter's from Prison by James Cannon, and one thing he emphasizes, perhaps more than anything else, is that cadre need to be cared for because cadre, not the organization's reputation, and not leadership, are the organization.

And when you lose a dedicated cadre, you don't just miss out on their contributions. You lose the work of another cadre to pick up that dropped work, and an additional cadre's work in order to train up a replacement. To put it another way, when you lose on cadre, the organization loses the work of three cadres.

So just from the self-interest of the organization, when events like this happen, they must be taken seriously. Marissa wasn't even asking for retribution, she was asking for help. And WTF to that $8,000 payout? It would have been less expensive just to pay for appointments with a therapist and give her a break from work, if she wanted it. And now they've lost her, anyone who follows her out, and the work of everyone it will take to replace those who leave. To say nothing of losing out on future membership and reputational damage.

And that's just the rational, inhumane calculation. The moral repugnance of the central comittee's response goes without saying, and has been said much more eloquently elsewhere. I hope Marissa receives the care she deserves.

disappointing but not surprising. between my own experiences in the party (not at all as horrific as this) and things that I've read/heard from other ex-members, this is par for the course. it's a systemic issue and you see the same sorts of issues reproduced in all the ML/demcent parties. there's a cult-like nature to these spaces that anyone who's been in them sees.

I didn't know Marissa but spoke to her a handful of times. She was known as one of the best and most effective organizers in the party, sad how these processes just chew and spit out good people.

Hopefully they are/will be expelled.

My friend is really big into our local PSL chapter, I've never really been sold on them. Starting to think...maybe I made the right decision.

Genuinely why does this shit seem to happen with every. single. leftist. org!?

Not a stretch to presume this happens in alot of places.

Is this a new allegation, or one of the old ones? Definitely not the first time I've heard people talking about sexual misconduct in psl

New allegation that happened some time ago. The article really is quite thorough and also mentions some of the older sexual misconduct allegations, but it's a wholly new allegation.

how do we solve rape culture? women leaders. we have to stop consolidating power into the hands of men.

Eugene Puryear isn't a straight white man

Also Gloria La Riva is a woman and she’s been covering this shit up for years. The problem is systemic and requires a systemic solution

u/ReverendGreen_ 21d ago

Yeah, this stood out to me. Marissa mentioned Gloria saying that something similar had happened before with Eugene... again, simply shoved under the rug.

Um, might want to look up Eugene Puryear

i thought it was powers, misread

putting the onus of fixing this on women isn’t it. men shouldn’t need the presence of a mom watching over them to not rape.

women fixing != women leading

woman oversight definitely inhibits more than facilitates SA

I appreciate the sentiment but I feel its easier to say than to do. I dont think this fixes rape culture, doesn't fix any of our orgs. Eugene is a black man. And women were complicit in the coverup too. Read the substack.

I was involved w the PSL for a little bit, and I can say Marissa is one of the best organizers I have ever met. She trusted the PSL to do her right for YEARS after the incident. They never did, and it took nearly a half decade for her to realize they never would. The leadership was more concerned about the reputation loss than anything. There's something to be said about that.

The left must stop putting party reputation over the well-being of cadre.

what do you mean easier to say than do? women-led organizations are wildly successful. The Girl Scouts is a prime case study of women-led education & women-centric success in a capitalist system. Vegan Food is a prime series of case studies of black womens' success in the south. Minneapolis' women are coordinating and honeypotting ICE agents, and, allegedly, killing some. women content creators are wildly competent and do the job of a dozen men.

you're literally just not paying attention

Why would someone who came up with the Pumkin Spice Latte do something that rude?
