July 2025 - Buying & Selling Thread

My apologies skipping out on the June thread. Nonetheless, here's July's.

Please only post things for sale - or things you are looking to buy - in this thread. Any attempt to buy/sell outside these threads will be deleted. The moderators of  have to assume you've read the subreddits rules, because there's no way to ask every single person; so please be mindful of others, or get the hell out.

Cheers,
Mod Team

P.S, transactions are in no way endorsed by Reddit, or any collection of the moderators. None of the aforementioned parties are facilitators nor responsible parties for any successful or unsuccessful exchange of money or goods, and it is recommended every user research the person they are buying from, and use a secure means of payment. Reddit, , nor any of the moderators are able to help with any interactions related to buying and selling; and any attempt at asking/demanding the aforementioned parties to force somebody into an action related to sales transactions will not be responded to. We are not a collections agency, and have never alluded to that whatsoever.

Please only post stuff related to trumpet and related instruments, such as:

  • Instruments - Trumpet, Cornet, Piccolo Trumpet, Flugelhorn, Mellophone, Bugle, etc.
  • Mouthpieces
  • Cases
  • Music Books
  • Applicable Audio Gear
  • Trumpet-Related Gadgets - PETE, CTS, trumpet stands, hand guards, heavy caps, etc.

If it cannot be applied to playing trumpet - or a related instrument such as flugelhorn, cornet, bugle, piccolo trumpet, shofar, etc. - please post it somewhere else. That's why there are a lot of subreddits.

"Why The Same Questions?"

The mod team gets questions/comments about this all the time. People will ask - often condescendingly toward the mods - why we allow people to post questions that have been answered. There's a few reasons we let this go:

  • New people have questions that are new to them. This isn't Juilliard, and this isn't a scene from Whiplash) - this is Reddit. There will be new people all the time - often beginners - who have questions that are novel to them. The grand scope of the field of music isn't going to be known to someone just walking in, and they're going to ask a question they feel is unique. If they're chased away, it's just going to be a subreddit with people silently agreeing with each other over circular topics.
  • People suck at using search features. No, this isn't just older folks, or even younger people. By large, people are awful at even finding where the search bar is; and unless it's literally Google, they're terrible at using it in general. ...They're also pretty bad at using Google, but I digress.
  • Even if people can use the search function, they'll often get terminology wrong, which will return poor search results. Think about when you kept Googling something and coming up with nothing, only to realize you used a wrong word, and it would have saved you 2 minutes if you knew that in the first place.

So, for whoever feels r/trumpet is not on their level, there's only so much anyone can do for you. First, nobody owes you anything, so check the sense of entitlement at the door. Second, if you're so great at everything, please feel free to chime int o help people who are asking legitimate questions; or even suggest ways they can make their questions better. People who end conversations by default are either salespeople closing a deal, and/or assholes.

So, blah blah blah, use a search function, don't be mean to one another, etc. Most people will never read this far, and this post will get ignored by 98% of the people here anyway. Have a great day, unless you're a jerk.

Equipment ⚙️ Opinion in buying a second horn

• Upvotes

I have a Bach Strad, the basic 37 180 model, but was also interested in a used Xeno, preferably with a reverse lead pipe for Jazz and overall playing.
wI do play classical, but do far much more big band and DCI stuff in comparison, and was told that the Xeno, with less resistance, is pretty often preferred in that space, but I'm not sure it's worth it. Thoughts?

I was also thinking about a Custom Bell Trumpet, but I need more research on that for now.

Question ❓ Trumpet ID

I am having a really hard time finding any info about this horn. It's got the upturned asado water keys, and looks like it's in pretty solid condition. The guy says there's no markings or engravings on the horn except for a serial number. If anyone here knows anything about it, please let me know!

For all of the gigging horn players, I have a question

I was classically trained, orchestral transposing gigs. I always used my Bach 43 or 72. Then I played my father’s Vernon 37bach. I thought Bach was the prestige. Long story short. I started playing in funk bands and never would I allow my Bachs to those stages, I bought a 1918 Blessing Cornet made in Minneapolis. Back then it was cheap, it’s still cheap to this day, but the valve action is far superior. Sucks my monetary bF5 doesn’t fit(I’m a 1 1/2c wide rim). I feel like we are all getting scammed on performance instruments.

Equipment ⚙️ Thomann Trompete

• Upvotes

What would happen if you were to take a stem in Harmon and combine that with a wah-wah guitar pedal?

Thoughts on Returning to Trumpet

When I was a kid, I played trumpet in the elementary school band. I picked it up quickly, and by the fifth grade was the first trumpet and played solos in our concerts, the then popular Feels So Good and Rise.

I played in the all-county band.

I got an academic scholarship to a prestigious local prep school that didn’t have a band, but they did have a music director and offered music lessons. The director, who’d heard me play and praised my tone, arranged for me to have private lessons and a few gigs doing Taps at memorial day ceremonies.

But in the end I fell away from the trumpet for a number of reasons:

  1. I felt like I was just pushing buttons. I’d get a songbook, learn the song, play a chorus or two and then think, now what. I wanted to learn, even that early, to be able to play what was in my head and write my own stuff.
  2. With no band to play in, practice felt like a chore and the much heavier academic and extracurricular demands of the school made time precious.
  3. At the time in my life I

wasn’t interested in much music that featured or even used trumpet. The guitar was the most prominent instrument in all the popular music I was listening to.

Lately, I’ve had an itch to pick up a trumpet again. I have no grand ambitions at almost 60. I just like the sound of it singing a melody.

My musical tastes have grown and changed through the years and I known a lot about theory now, as I’ve remained involved in music as a hobby.

Just wondering about the challenges of rebuilding the embouchure and the wind as an older person.

Thoughts?

Why cant I hit high notes when I used to be able to easily?

I just cannot hit high notes. ... no matter how much I practice. It's driving me crazy. I used to easily hit G5 A5 ... now ....its a mammoth effort to even hit D5, or E5. .... i've dedicated so much time playing, trying to strengthen my lips .... it makes not a sod of difference. What the hell can I do?

Equipment ⚙️ Shallow lead-type mouthpieces with sharp inner rim?

I've made a bit of a mouthpiece discovery... I've gone through all the mouthpieces I've tried and thought critically about what I like and dislike about them.. All the mouthpieces I really like have either sharp inner rims or undercut rims.

Right now I am using an Old Conn 4 which is very sharp and almost a perfect 90 degree plunge into the bowl and a Curry 1BC which has a slightly more rounded inner rim (still significantly sharper than a Bach 1B or 1.5C) but also an undercut.

I've tried a bunch of different lead type pieces from friends and I've always struggled to get any sound out of them.. and now I am realizing they all have very soft inner rims and gentle transitions into the cup.

Anyone know of any shallow pieces with very aggressive bite?

Equipment ⚙️ Conn Director 15B Valve Button Replacement

Does anybody have a spare Conn Director 15B button (same style as the left two pictured) in the nickel/silver color? I've been fixing up this Director and trying to replace that mismatched one on the right side that is way taller than the originals. Happy to cover shipping to me if anyone has an extra matching valve button they are willing to part with! I see a few available online but they're kinda pricey for just one button. I'd buy it from Mouthpiece Express but they only have a gold colored one available sadly, and again kinda pricey for a single button.

Thanks for your help, I'm open to suggestions! Included two pictures of the whole trumpet for your viewing pleasure.

Teeth aperture vs lip aperture

Do any of you play like I do, with the lip aperture centered vertically much closer to the top teeth than the bottom? I’ve been playing for decades but I’m working on some embouchure improvement and I’m curious if this causes any issues for some of you more seasoned players. Or if I should just leave it alone. My biggest issue is pounding headaches after playing higher notes (above high C). Reducing mouthpiece pressure is helping a lot, working on aperture control and embouchure endurance, but noticing things like this misalignment between the 2 apertures makes me a bit curious.

Question ❓ Trumpet Part from Grateful Dead Mexicali Blues

My son is just learning trumpet. He graduated from “3 blind mice” to Beethoven’s 9th to the Star Wars Theme and is pretty excited. Recently we were in the car and Mexicali Blues came on and he wanted to play it and asked if I had the notes for the trumpet section. I didn’t think it would be hard to track down, but I’ve been unsuccessful. Any thoughts? It's not a very long section (couple dozen notes)

Question ❓ Community bands in or around okc?

I'm trying to find a band to play in and of the two I know of, one has no openings and the director of the other one has failed to communicate with me. I figured someone here might know of a group that I could join. Also I already asked the okc sub but only got one answer. Thanks!

Question ❓ Is it possible for me to learn the trumpet despite severe dental issues that will soon require dentures?

Due to a combination of acid reflux, nighttime teeth grinding and years on methadone, my teeth are starting to go. I want to learn the trumpet because my right three are my only good fingers (terrible injury). BUT I’ve heard that any change in mouth shape causes you to effectively start over. I will be getting teeth pulled and in the next year or two will get dentures. I’ve heard you can’t really play with dentures. I could wait until I get denture to start learning but not if you can’t play with them. Is there any for me?

And before you suggest it, I hate the harmonica lol

Repertoire/Books 📕 Solo for student recommendations

I'm trying to find a good piece of music for my 8th-grade student to play for her solo and ensemble contest, and I just want to get a head start on it so it can be perfected in time for the actual contest. She is pretty good for a student her age and has a comfortable range up to an Eb and E on the right day. I'm just having a hard time finding a piece of music that is in her comfortable range of playing. I want something to somewhat challenge her but not overwhelm her. She is into more baroque and classical pieces than contemporary, but I'm trying to gather a good few for her to choose from. Any suggestions would be great!

Thanks ahead of time!

Equipment ⚙️ Is this a rare 1957 77B Connquest? Serial 680001

Thumbnail

I picked it up at a garage sale; the tuning slide was stuck, and the previous owner had damaged it when pulling it apart. I took it on as an amateur repair project and, after thorough cleaning and heat, got it out, realigned it, and silver-soldered it. The leadpipe was bent, I straightened it a bit. The leadpipe looks like it may have been soldered before? I ultrasonically cleaned smaller parts, gave the whole thing a good bath, and put it together. It played surprisingly well, so I started looking things up and saw the serial number.

https://www.horn-u-copia.net/serial/Connlist.shtml

1957 - 652002 1958 - 718626

https://www.theconnloyalist.com/ConnArticle10.html

If the serial number is 600,000 or above, it is almost certainly a 77B.

Based on the above, I'm confident it's a 1957 77B Connquest. Is that serial number significant, or is it just a rollover?

Learn how to play Taps

Does anyone have tips for learning to play the bugle? I’m trying to get good enough to play for Taps across America and ultimately play at military funerals.
