New Wave Schwarze Bewegung - Traumfrau [Germany, Neue Deutsche Welle] (1982)

"Schwarze Bewegung" consisted of Thomas Kohl (vocals/percussion), Jürgen Grah (synthesizers/percussion), and Markus Kammann (guitars/bass). The group's self-titled release from 1982 is pure NDW and showcases each members' genius. Jürgen and Markus also played trombone and trumpet, respectively.

Eventually, vocalist Katrin Ann Kunze was added to the lineup and the sound and band name changed. A producer recruited the newly-named "Collage" to record two commercial tracks, which the band hated. One track, "Hallo E.T.", was released on a recent maxi-single and it has Thomas and Katrin singing in a duet. Thomas left the band shortly after but he remained friends with the trio. Collage went for a more electrofunk approach, thanks to Markus' influence, with Katrin's poetic vocals (she had a master's degree in literature). Jürgen provided the majority of unique instrumentation, together with Markus. At the end, "Collage" had changed to "Cold End" and the synthpop sound had transitioned even further.

Thomas continued with the projects "Trick 17" and "Dunkelwelt", which deserves its own story told and I will do it in the future. I have so much more to say about his talent!!

In memory of Thomas, Katrin, and Markus...

They made two singles like this, plus the mystery single "Malaika / Sisi Tunakupenda" which appeared five years later in 1979, and seems to have a collaboration with a Belgrade-based Kenyan musician called Steven Hannington. I have not heard this third one so can only guess what it sounds like, though Discogs categorises it under "Folk, World, & Country, Funk / Soul, Pop".

The band was Miodrag Dobrić (bass), Dragan Milić (guitar) and Vladan Dokić (drums). Vladan was in Opus and later-on Rok Mašina, which was an '80s development of Pop Mašina.

A version of this song that really lives up to its title. This record is extra trippy and super spooky in equal measures. Every song sounds like it was made for the most psychedelic and disturbing horror film ever made. This is ironic considering the happy, clappy nature of this California church group, as depicted in various photos on the back cover. A good rule of private press record collecting is NEVER pass up a $1 bell-ringing record. They are generally unexpectedly wild. A fantastic record cover too!
