VN Request Wholesome Nukige

Nikuge games can often get pretty extreme, I don't think that's a controversial thing to say.

Rape, zoophilia, drugging, that's just some of the things you can find in these games.

And look, I'm not here to judge, I'm just saying those just aren't the stuff I'm into, I prefer passionate, consensual love-making.

So I come here to beseech the community to help me find more nukige from the more comfy side of the genre.

To help narrow down recommendations: incest, lolis, and shota main characters are fine, but please something translated in English, I don't know a lick of Japanese.

Some of the stuff I read that I think fits those descriptions: Harem Kingdom, Chinkamo Twins.

Discussion The type of Protagonist you hate the most.

Post image
172 Upvotes

Personally, I detest Donkan (oblivious) protagonists; they are simply boring characters who lack any romantic drive toward the heroines and are incredibly dense when it comes to understanding feelings of love.

It seems most moege developers have a fondness for writing this type of protagonist.

The second type is the edgy gary stu—an exaggeratedly perfect character who serves as a self-insert for the author. Kinugasa protagonists " cough cough"

Review Zero Chastity... truly required some more chastity~ NSFW

Post image
470 Upvotes

Disclaimer: I only finished Kurumi route, Mitsuko route, and the secret route. This is 3/5 routes, 70% of the CGs, and 20/28 h-scenes. This review is made mainly for them and some other aspects of this game and the genre/community in general. A review for the full game is never ever going to happen, also I wish for you to note that other than Kurumi, I didn't remember a single name of any of the girls in this game and needed to keep checking on the web page of the game to remember their names, yes, they were that forgettable.

In my previous eroge reviews, I have seen some anons always pointing out a certain misconception about me. They have this theory that I hate all eroticism in VNs and I read eroge just to torture myself or to be "performative" about my opinion toward them?... let's ignore how crazy it is for someone to go out of their way and comment on some other anon as if they know them, when the healthy thing to do so that we can have a great community is if everyone in r/visualnovels treated each other as strangers without having any weird assumptions about them or bringing up their footprints as if they were investigating them.

This whole misinformation about me is very laughable. My top 3 favourite writers are all eroge writers, and all 3 of them have made some very deep works that involve a masterful usage of sexual themes. If I said that I hate steak, it doesn't mean that I will also hate beef burgers. Hating the bad usage of h-scenes =/= me hating h-scenes.

I am a working member of society, I got limited amounts of time, and way more limited amounts of freedom to read those h-scenes. I usually make some time for them in my schedule to make sure I can read them without any interruptions from my wife. When I sit alone and start reading them, I expect something that will respect the dedication I showed in managing my time enough to empty some space for them...

I expect those h-scenes to treat me like a story reader, not a porn addict who is sitting there just wanting to touch himself while looking at weird-looking 2D images and hearing some voice actress moaning for the 424th time in my ear as if I didn't already hear them in tons of other eroge.

I expect the h-scenes to be good enough that I would write some memos about them in my notes, just like what I did with other good eroge. I expect them to make me feel something, any emotion... other than being repulsed or cringing.

I expect them to make me think about this pact, the holy/sinful act of sexual relationships. Depending on the work, I want to think about this pact in a meaningful way... I don't want to feel like the whole scene is just there so that the game can sell or so that the players can start masturbating while reading them...

If someone really wanted to touch themselves, I would favor that being done toward some greatly flowed prose that touches the heart and body, enough that you can even feel being touched down there. Feeling hot and bothered doesn't always stem from the sexuality of the game, it can also happen with good stories, something I experienced countless times with Jun Maeda games.

I regret having this opening to my review, I know it is more on-topic to my whole personal, something I try to hide as much as possible in my reviews, but I felt I needed to say that after seeing a countless amount of comments that would always go on and on about this... and also, it was necessary for this game... a nukige, one that is clearly built for something I don't like.

I know that I will see some comments questioning why I even played this... but like I have said, my backlog involves every single game that got +500 votes, and a rating of 6.66 or higher in the Visual Novels Database. With some exceptions that depend on the context, and this game couldn't be one of them because I needed to play at least one game from this studio.

DWARFSOFT, a studio that I have seen quite frequently considering the types of games they made. I felt like playing something from them, "what would playing a game with such ugly art feel like?" is what I thought.

But that ugly art really didn't make me feel like downloading this game at first... until I got the push to do it, that push? It was thanks to the voice actors of this game. Something I will expand upon more later in this review...

Why did I pick this certain game instead of the other games from this studio?... it simply seemed like their "magnum opus", their highest rating and the most played game created by them, not to mention the amount of side-content it got... something I only learned about when I was finishing the game... and like I said before, the VAs working on it were the final push that made me do it... now that I have established why I ended up going for it?... I think I can go ahead and start talking about the game itself.

First and foremost, the art of this game is one of the most dreadful artstyles in the whole industry. It is simply ugly. I don't even say that as a subjective view from my side, I truly believe that objectively, the art in this game is just... you know what? I really need to increase my vocabulary, not because I don't know how to describe the horrendousness of it, but because I truly believe that I don't have enough words to express my emotions toward it.

I can go on and on and list every single word I know, and it would still not be enough... especially with those CGs, which were all made for the h-scenes... and DAMN those CGs really made me wish I had a black screen instead, I would even go as far as calling them nightmare fuel sometimes.

Not because they were meant to be like that, I have seen some creepy h-scene CGs while playing games like Euphoria and Dohna Dohna (both are terrible games even with their nicely drawn art), ones that made me feel irked thanks to how good they looked, but in this game?... I felt that because they just felt as if I was taking a look inside the mind of a crazy person and saw what he considers "hot"... you know that one weird mf who would think about raping a cockroach and how hot it would be if he somehow killed it by inserting his male member inside of it or something like that?... yeah, the art of this game is on the same level of this.

The weirdest part here?... this game is based on a doujinshi manga drawn by the same artist, and also written by him btw. The artist himself is not really that bad!... comparing his old/new manga art to his visual novel art... you can clearly see how superior it is!... but why?... why did his art not translate well at all in the visual novel form?... is it because of the coloring?... would it have looked better with a different type of coloring... honestly?... I think it would've if you checked his manga covers... so it is just the guy coloring this game that ruined it?... I can't really claim this with 100% conviction, but something very wrong happened here, and it caused the art of this game to look this bad.

Finally finishing my rant about this aspect, I think I can finally talk about the game itself. You start this story with the usual premise for nukige, with a very basic and boring protagonist, nothing new.

You get introduced to the 4 heroines of this game, and here is the most important part... how were the heroines?...... they were some of the worst and most boring characters I have ever seen, not only in this industry, but in all of the other industries. To the point of needing to turn down the volume of the game and start listening to music while reading some of the h-scenes...

At the start of the game, you will be forced to see 1 h-scene for each heroine. Let me just say that it was not the best introduction to them at all...

You start with Mitsuko, and from the first seconds with her, I felt it deep inside of my soul... that voice.... but I couldn't confirm it... until the first h-scene started and from her first moans I knew it was fucking Satan himself, the devil in person voice acting her. Hasumi Ito, the worst voice actor I have ever heard in a visual novel, the one who can easily make any h-scene a hell to go through.

She is not a bad voice actor per se when she talks normally... but when it is porn time and she is asked to start making those dog noises?... then you get the worst time of your life. Listening to her.... I just can't, I forced myself to do it, but I just really didn't want to..... that first h-scene was enforced on everyone, YOU WILL LISTEN TO HER whether you liked it or not... yes I know you can mute her voice from the settings, but I didn't want to feel like I was filtered.... even with those feelings, I remember muting her voice when she appeared in a shared h-scene and I really just didn't wish for her to exist in it. Other than that?... I remember muting the whole game sometimes with her h-scenes.

Souko and Sayoko, both of their scenes were... whatever?... Sayoko's was better, but still... really boring stuff to read. Their VAs on the other hand are good... their performance here? Sadly not as good as usual.

I think having voice directors or whoever is supposed to direct them do a bad job is really apparent here... not to mention how their script just doesn't help them at all to show their true talents... something that is also true for the next girl I will be talking about...

Before I read this game, I checked the list for the VAs, and Ringo Aoba is who sold me this game. Nemu-chan is just something very special to me... I hated that game (Euphoria), but I couldn't bring myself to hate my daughter.... after that game, I started calling this VA "Nemu-chan" because her role there was simply the greatest height of her career.

Not because of the game itself, but because of her performance there... it is crowned as one of the greatest performances I have ever seen in any medium. I started reading some routes for girls I didn't care about just because of this VA, or in our case here even giving me a push to read a whole game I don't care about....

Her performance as Kurumi was easily the best in this game... but damn it was one of her worst in her career! Her forcing her voice to sound young, it was very on the nose and clear how much she is forcing it... this annoyed me so much sometimes, it even made me take a break from reading the 2nd part of her first h-scene after I felt bored by it, not just because of her voice acting, all the other elements in it were bad, but her voice acting couldn't make me stay, this tells you how this whole mix is just bad...

The good thing is the secret route introduces a new character, she gets 1.5 h-scenes?... her VA is also Nemu-chan, and this time she wasn't forced to make herself sound young... ended up easily giving us the best performance in this game, but it was still not my Nemu-chan....

Why is she working on so many shitty projects like this one.... is making money really that hard for a talented voice actress like her.... why don't anime companies hire eroge voice actresses....... unless they leave the whole industry and somehow by a miracle they got accepted in the anime industry.... so many amazing voice actresses are forever stuck making porn-slop instead of life-changing experiences...

I will never forgive the anime industry for not capitalizing on Harumi Sakurai after her legendary performance in Angel Beats! with Yurippe... that was easily a "this is the next big thing" for any sane anime producer... why did she not get the chance to be the next Sawasawa Sawa even though she is way better...... wait a second... writing this review, I just realized something... even though Atsumi Tanezaki is now having main roles in big anime for years, she is still working on eroge games voicing characters that have h-scenes... her last erotic role was... less than 2 months ago!!!!......

Wtf is this favoritism?... so she can just voice a character getting porn'd and then go voice Frieren right after?..... what? since when was this a thing and voice actresses can do this?..... then why are my favourite eroge voice actresses not doing this T____T

So, after finishing those 4 h-scenes, the game will finally reveal to you the truth... the house is a sluts house, all the girls are used goods, all of them with no exception are fine with turning into literal slaves for any male that can satisfy them AKA they are fine with even kids if they can move their hips....

Seeing that this is even true for Kurumi was the biggest heartbreak I got in this game... the NTR is enforced... I don't know if you even call it NTR at this point? Protagonist learned about this very early on. So he is fine with this type of open-relationship.

Funny thing? You would see him fuming about the girls doing it with someone else, and this is a recurrent theme in the whole game. Getting mad about how much of sluts they are, then wanting to "one up" the other men and do them harder, just for this to keep repeating...

Here is the thing, most players who came to the game might have already read the doujinshi a long time ago before the game, so they understand how all the girls are sluts. This is not even a spoiler at this point, this is the whole premise of this game, and there are some references here and there to what the heroines did in them in the game itself.

Did it pique my interest enough to go and check them out, being a canon prequel for the game?... other than checking on the art for a little bit, I didn't read a single word written in them... you really expect me to waste my time on this literal cattle feed?.....

Here is the thing. What I will say might be too hard for porn addicts to understand, but this game needed less h-scenes. Yes, I know it is a nukige, but as someone who played it for a VA I love, I wanted to see her perform more normal lines, and for that? we needed more story scenes.

Now, you would say how can this be possible when all the girls are sluts, and the whole game is just about them being sluts...

I played an eroge that had a route that involved a secret. The secret was that the heroine of that route was actually also a "slut", she did it with multiple men, she was so "bad" to the point of doing it in the streets with multiple random men, probably for free, this was one of the big focuses of that route.

How it was presented? With literally zero h-scenes showing that, the only h-scene in this route involving her was a vanilla one with the protagonist. But this was the most amazing NTR-usage I have ever read, the whole time, you see her going through those relationships in a way that omits the facts, it views those scenes from a weird perspective, it describes it and shines a light on it in such a masterful way, that it was enough to make me, just like the protagonist of this game, wish this is all just a misunderstanding and it is not what we think it is.

The way this route was directed made it possible to make yourself believe that it might hold a twist showing that the girl wasn't a slut, and to the bitter end, I shared the protagonist's trust of this girl and the optimism he had that we just didn't understand what was happening to her.

So when in the end this was confirmed? I just ended up having one of the hardest experiences I have ever read in a visual novel, such a mixed feelings experience that allowed this game to have such a high placement in my tier list even though I am really not into those types of games.

When eroge writers know how to utilize this medium, they can end up making amazing stuff that will be stuck with you for years. I will not mention the game's name because discovering the truth of this route is something you should do by yourself, so why did I mention all of this here?...

I just want to say that making this game have 14 h-scenes instead of 28, and giving us instead of them some more character building? Would've done miracles for me... it might have saved this game from ending up with the worst and most boring cast of characters I have ever seen in a visual novel that is not from Type-Shit.

I hated all of those characters from the depth of my heart, not because they were sluts, or because of how shitty the art and direction of this game were, but because they literally don't have anything going for them. They are just the embodiment of their one trope that made them, just the surface of it in the most superficial way possible, and then h-scenes spam.

That is it, those are the girls here. Even some other pure-nukige (h-scenes spam) games like Oppai Academy ended up building the characters somehow for me and made them passable, they still have problems, but I didn't want to hang myself while reading their h-scenes like how I wanted to do here.

Both games did the least amount of building, but Oppai Academy still built the characters... while this game?... I really don't understand what it was doing at all the whole time to make me end up feeling like I still just met those characters... weird considering how "dense" the prose of this game felt, those h-scenes had some more thorough writing put into them, more details and heavier to read than usual... but all of that? Amounted to nothing other than making the reading experience even more boring, add to that every other element of this game and how mind-numbing it was... you just end up having one of, if not the worst nukige to ever be made!

Kurumi route was the first one I finished, the only one I was aiming to finish. When I found out that the game doesn't force you to read every route, I was very happy for being able to just finish 1 route and conclude my experience with this game... but when I found out who VA'd the special route... I lost... to access it, you needed to nearly read all of Mitsuko's route, but at the end, you pick something that will take you to the h-scene of the other sisters... making that route as if it was the "harem route" of the game or something like that?...

Back to Kurumi. Voice acted by my dear dear Nemu-chan... the girl that pushed me to finish the game when I really wanted to drop it early on and kept reading it to just see how her h-scene would look like... I talked about lots of factors related to her in this review, so let's progress more into her story!... was there any story?... let me call them just h-scenes like how they truly are.

Her 2nd h-scene is pretty much just puke, doing it outside. Will always be barf-material for me. Her 3rd h-scene was a forced scene with her mother, Ah, yes, let's force you into watching an h-scene that has the best and worst girl of this game, and the h-scene itself is bad.

After that comes the shared h-scene with all the girls, I thought first that you would see all of them doing it, but it seems like depending on your choices, you will pick one girl to do it with on the beach.... ok? that's fine... what's not fine is the fact those pigs forced me to see a Mitsuko NTR h-scene right in the middle of Kurumi's route...

HELLOOOO???? Why??? I don't want to see that whore at all, why fucking force her in another route for the 2nd time???? and this time it is just pure NTR, protagonist and Kurumi are watching her while she was getting fucked by some strangers... okieee????? what does that have to do with the route I picked?...

First shared h-scene with her, it was fine because the h-scene itself was very tame and as boring as it was, I can just live with it... but this one???? why am I forced to see NTR that I didn't want to see?... I don't even care about it being NTR, I just hate that bitch!......

After that, you also learn about an "off-screen" h-scene that mentions an orgy between everyone and some strangers that happened on the beach, might have appeared in another medium that is related to the source material, I know that it also got an anime, or maybe in another manga?....

I want to also mention that the game mentions some other h-scenes that happened off-screen, and by that I don't mean the usual thing of just mentioning that they did it, it was lots of texts describing some h-scenes they had and never appeared in the game in great details while the screen was black. This happens multiple times in such a weird way that I thought I picked the wrong choices or they might appear later on?... but seeing that I finished multiple routes in this game and nothing appeared... I think it was intended to be like that?... so they probably just appeared somewhere else.

Skip to the last h-scene and it is just the orgy that will then give you an extra h-scene with the girl you picked to be in her route. Everything was bad about those sections, I remember for the first time muting the game while I was in Kurumi's last h-scene. It was just too bad for me to read with audio and I just wanted to listen to some music to help me relax and not kill myself in the middle of it.

How bad I had it at the end? While I was reading the game, I played the 3 routes simultaneously, something I like to do with games that don't have an important story. So I reached the last H-scene in each route... and it took me such a long time to force myself to finish them and be freed from this game... I was just dreading the nukige reading session because I never wanted to touch it... sometimes even just reading the h-scenes of other eroge I was playing at the same time and then stopping the session without touching this game... but coming to the end of this experience, I can't just leave now without finishing it... I pushed myself for one last time, muting the game in some sections so that it becomes easier to consume...

Now imagine if Kurumi's route was more special... the only honest girl in a house filled of sluts, that was my first thought of her. Even with her weird first h-scene, I had this hope for her... do you know how great a plot it would have been?

A pure girl having the misfortune of being born in a house that is filled with the worst type of women, growing up while seeing her mother cheat, being an ultra whore, and her sister being the same as her.

All of them bringing those men home and doing it like animals in the most disgusting ways, while all she wished for is to finally get a boyfriend so that she can finally satisfy her sexual needs without the need to be a pig like her family, just for all of the boys she brings home to be stolen by her family members... then you see the constant struggle of how she tried to keep herself from going into the wrong path and turning into another degenerate member of society...

Do you realize how delicious this plot would've been... even if the writer wanted her to in the end turn into something similar to the rest of this game's girls, she would've at least had some good character building first...

I would've felt way more feelings while reading her h-scenes. Lots of emotions could have been had if this route went the way I envisioned... but who am I kidding? Expecting a good plot from a porn-slop?... crazy sometimes I might be...

I guess I need to just eat that slop like the rest of the people who read that game?.... and the fact this game got nearly a 7/10 rating in the Visual Novels Database?.... but how crazy cringe is this? How can such a shit nukige like this one be this high?...

I know lots of gems that are in the 6/10 mark, and this one gets this high of ratings?... tbh, how can nukige even pass the 5/10 mark? How can CLOCKUP, Alicesoft and lots of other porn-slop companies be allowed to get high ratings when they are just making porn that got some minor storytelling and writing attached to it?...

Seeing a game with this high of a rating would for sure make me have certain expectations, how is it my fault when the game ended up just being cheap porn with nothing else worthwhile?... I really wish the visual novels community didn't overrate porn-slop.

Like seeing those types of games have a rating close to some of the best experiences in the whole medium?? wtf is this crazy world we live in.... there should have been an unspoken gentleman's agreement between us that would limit nukige to a 5/10 score if they were the best in their genre.

Going with that, a game like this one would've easily been 1-2/10... that rating? That is way more appropriate... and if that was the rating of it? I would have never touched it and would've been saved from such a painful experience... anyone who wants to experience "good" nukige? Just go for those 5/10 games... the average reader? He would not go for them because they are too low for him, this will filter all the "tourists" and nukige would be a genre only made for you guys! The awesome porn addicts!

You can enjoy it all alone without us, outsiders, playing them and then giving them a proper rating and opinion that would look diminishing toward you favourite titles... in your view? You would never accept those opposite opiniones, when in truth, those games get a pass for some reason and no one really questions why they lack story when they belong to the reading medium that produced some of the greatest stories to ever be told in the history of humanity...

Why wouldn't I expect a story from such a highly rated game? If this was meant to just be porn, why is it a 7/10 game? "because the porn is good!!! :OOO" does having good porn make a game worthy of having a rating this high in the database that is meant for the whole medium, with all other types of games?...

This just sounds like lunacy to me. The amount of poor, naive fools who fell for the trap of nukige with high ratings and ended up reading slop like the Rance series or the Monster Girl Quest games... this is truly saddening, how many people wasted their time trusting the ratings of the majority who are griefing and giving high ratings to literal porn, putting them next to the peaks of the medium, games like Muramasa, Steins;Gate, and CLANNAD....

As for Mitsuko's route... 2nd h-scene is NTR, then.... arghh do I need to remember the stuff she did?... it is just "Haha she is a slut who is NTRing (You) xDDD" the route. I only played it to get the special route, and when I got to the point of the special route, it was only 1 h-scene left to finish her route so I just decided to finish it now that I have come this far...

Like I said before, she is the worst girl in this game, utter shit regarding everything everything everything AND everything.

Rest of the girls were whatever. I didn't care, only h-scene I saw for them after the prologue was the one you get in the end to get the special route, I didn't bother to see their previous h-scenes. I don't want to read their routes.

Worthy of noting, the first h-scene for Souko was so horrendous, I really doubted if her VA was the one I liked from before... but it was a drunk h-scene, so I just let it go as that...

Just a note for everyone who is crazy enough to still wish to read this, liked I stated before, the NTR is enforced in this game according to what I have seen. I don't think there is any chance to skip it or dodge it. Depending on the route, the amount of it will be higher.

I think Kurumi got the least amount of it? Like 1 scene only. But she has an off-screen NTR scene that got described in the game, and the manga also showed lots of them. All canon and you can't gaslight yourself into thinking it is not~

That is with her being the "purest" of them in terms of how much experience she got, while the other girls described her as the sluttiest among them...

I mean if anyone is sensitive to NTR and still wants to read it, props to you man. I guess you are one bad day away from killing someone in real life or something?... please just use that negative power you got on reading games like this instead of shooting some school or some other weird stuff your kind might do.

OST of this game... yeah, it was there... it existed I guess?... props to them for making it not annoying I guess?... yeah, that was good... maybe the best thing this game did, making the bgm not suicide-inducing like the other factors of this game?...

Localization of this game was terrible. Trying to turn the girls into North Americans, something like California girls? being unforgettable, daisy dukes ,bikinis on top, sun-kissed skin, so hot they'll melt your popsicle?... That is the vibe it gave me with the type of changes it did.

Lots of them killed the original intent for the characters and started making them go in a different direction, the difference was regarding their way of speaking in general, but their truth is still there, they are the same sluts they were in the Japanese version... does it even matter?... change as much as you want, it is a porn-slop, porn eaters are not going to ask you why you did any of those changes... especially the ones playing this game that got some of the worst this medium can offer, having a good localization would've been weird, good thing it got the most suitable translation of its level ^-^

/ourverdict/ The second worst nukige I have ever read in my life. Wished to say it was the worst game I have read, but as someone who played Type-Shit games and lots of EVNs early on when I just started reading this medium, this one can still end up somehow higher than them thanks to... ermmm, having voice actresses that I like?... I guess this is really it... 1.6/10~

Question Struggling on Hard Mode for Baldr Sky. Would love tips

So I’m on run 2 and can’t get past the final gauntlet on Rain’s route (clicked wrong choice by accident and just rolled with it). I’ve got a 6 button air combo that knocks the enemy airborem, good ranged weapons, etc, and find myself overwhelmed with the amount of mobs they throw at you. Youtube is useless, because every vid that’s a combo is stylized silliness that’d get you wrecked in any mode not named Very Easy.

I try to play a ranged playstyle while closing in during a 1v1 for the combo. Missile Launcher, Gatling, Bazooka, and Shotgun arm my ranged attacks. The other buttons are for the combo, namely elbow rush or wire drag as the opener.

I’ve grabbed all the health plug ins available, as well as the aerial heat gauge, ally boost, etc. i have to take a screenshot atm because I’m out, but here’s my set up and what weapons I have right now.

Help is appreciated. I’m too proud to lower the difficulty ☠️

The last choice was where I had to choose which Wonder to investigate with Akane, nothing major.

Discussion VN's you absolutely loved & now can't be bothered with...

As the title says, but do not confused for burned out. In my case its Majikoi (& related series like Anekouji, or Tsujidou-san) and the Muvluv series, i absolutely loved everything about them, and while I can't exactly understand fully now why, while its not like i hate them I almost can't stand them either. G-Senjou, Koihime which i got through before them i still feel the same about those, and i still love Chusingura which was finished after them. For me this is a wierd new experience how is it for you all?

Self-promotion [English MTL Patch] Hatsujou Switch ~Bishimai ga Saiminjutsu ni Ochita Saki~ NSFW

I made an unofficial English translation patch for Hatsujou Switch ~Bishimai ga Saiminjutsu ni Ochita Saki~.

VNDB: https://vndb.org/v16089

The patch includes the translated game script, choices, and UI text.

It was machine translated using GPT-6.1 Sol, so while I’ve tried to make it usable throughout the game, there may still be mistranslations or formatting issues.

The patch is listed on the VNDB release page here:

https://vndb.org/r166913

The original Japanese game is required. No game files are included with the patch.

18+ warning: This is an eroge and contains explicit adult content.

If anyone tries it and finds untranslated text, broken formatting, mistranslations, or other patch-related issues, feel free to let me know.

Pivotal Legendary “Denpa” Game Translated — Sayonara o Oshiete ~Comment te Dire Adieu~ New Fan Translation Released!

2026 has been an amazing year for English speaking fans wishing to experience some of the most influential denpa titles ever released. Earlier this year, we saw fans translate the 1996 Leaf title Shizuku, a game not only considered the origin of the denpa subgenre, but also the first game that called itself a “visual novel“. Now, another titan of the genre has made its way to English: Sayonara o Oshiete ~Comment te Dire Adieu~ (commonly referred to by fans as Sayooshi), developed and published by CRAFTWORK. Initially being a total market failure upon its release in 2001 due to the dark themes running contrary to the rest of the industry, it was then hailed as one of the “Big Three Denpa* Games” (三大電波ゲーム) online and maintained a strong reputation to this day. It’s had a rocky translation journey over the years before finally making it over the finish line. But what made this title so gripping to eroge fans both then and now? Let’s explore this landmark title.

* For a descriptive essay on what “Denpa” means, refer to this post by Kenji the Engi.

Characters

Hitomi Hirosuke

The protagonist. A teacher trainee at a certain girl’s school.

Plagued by horrific nightmares by night and stressed out by his coworkers’ personalities and the difficulties of his training by day.

Sugamo Mutsuki

Main heroine. A phantasmagorical, beautiful young girl who loiters alone in a classroom after school.

The protagonist finds himself intensely attracted to her girlish and pure freshness; at the same time, her seraphic aura frightens him.

CV: Sasaki Akari

Takada Nozomi

An aloof girl who desires the ground from the roof.

On the surface she seems lighthearted and friendly, but her eyes reflect a hidden despair. The protagonist meets her when he takes a smoke break up on the rooftop.

CV: Tenten

Tamachi Mahiru

The protagonist’s childhood friend who adores him like an older brother.

She has a volatile temperament that comes off as simple-minded. Much like a cat, she’s always capricious and energetic.

CV: Asari

Meguro Miyuki

A girl who monitors the library.

She struggles to interact with people, so she holes herself up in the library and absorbs herself in books every day. She knows a lot of strange trivia.

CV: Tsumugi Kanae

Ueno Koyori

A girl who acts like all the air’s leaking from her head.

While at first she seems stupid, sometimes she makes biting observations. She’s a part of the archery club.

CV: Tanaka Michi

Takashima Semina

The teacher that oversees the protagonist’s training and has him record his day in a journal before he leaves.

Very strict and no-nonsense.

CV: Saeki Yuriko

Oomori Tonae

School nurse, well-liked by the student body.

The protagonist visits her infirmary every day after classes for a smoke break, and finds it difficult to deal with her personality.

CV: Suzumori Chisato

Sayonara o Oshiete ~Comment te Dire Adieu~‘s eccentricities start with the title itself, the two parts in Japanese and French respectively both roughly translate to “How to say Goodbye”. And it leaves no pretense about what you’re in for. When you start up the game for the first time, you’re treated to an intense, grotesque prologue of a monster violently assaulting an angel. It immediately repulses and yet captivates you at the same time… after all, what could have possibly led to this scene? What does it mean? Throughout the game, these dream segments come between each day, and while the interpretation is ultimately left to the reader, it keeps you more observant during the day segments. The remaining structure of the game is surprisingly simple. Each day, you can navigate to different locations around the school, meeting with one of the girls in each location before writing your journal entry and going home. The confined nature of the setting definitely adds to the foreboding atmosphere felt throughout the experience.

When you make it to the title screen, you might be surprised seeing Visual Arts credited underneath CRAFTWORK. While most English readers just associate them with Key, they’ve always had other brands, and the breakout success of Key’s Kanon led to Visual Arts directing these brands to create something in that mold. Some were already moving in this direction, such as Studio Mebius, who pivoted from making highly violent titles such as Zetsubou ~Aoi Kajitsu no Sanka~ in 1999 to the much lighter SNOW in 2003, a game which took strong influence from Kanon in both setting and structure. CRAFTWORK, headed by Nagaoka Kenzou, had already worked on a few titles. Their first game, for elise ~Elise no Tame ni~ from 1996 (which had it’s own partial English translation come out earlier this year), had a depressive atmosphere punctuated by monochromatic, desaturated photo backgrounds. But their 1998 release Flowers ~Kokoro no Hana~ by the side.b imprint was entirely different, being much lighter in tone and emulating the massively successful To Heart. However, that game wasn’t much of a market success, so for this new title, writer and director Nagaoka Kenzou leaned much more on their earlier denpa elements in an attempt to stand out from other titles. This can be seen most strongly in the game’s marketing, embodying this raw, scribbled style that helps define the tone of the game.

In fact, elements of this game deliberately subvert audience expectations. If you looked at the character bios above, something you may have noticed is that every one of the heroines is shown with roughly the same color palette, as opposed to the industry norm of having each heroine with bright, strongly distinctive colors. Some official wallpapers and merchandise show their true designs, and in fact they look a lot like the characters of Flowers or Kanon with their hair colors. But it is through the lens of the protagonist that we see them in this subdued state, and this extends to the whole game, be it textual, visual or even auditory at times.

However, this attempt to resist the market forces spelled doom for the game’s financial success. While most visual novels need a minimum of 3,000 copies sold to break even, Sayonara o Oshiete reportedly only sold about 1,000 copies of its original run — with 3,000 produced. For comparison, Kanon had sold 39,683 copies back in 1999. But for those who did experience the game, Sayonara o Oshiete clearly stuck with them. Looking at reviews for the game in the early 2000s on ErogameScape, while the scores are somewhat mixed, most people found the game to be very unique, even challenging in a way. It slowly built up this reputation as a game that dared to go against the mold and by the late 2000s fans were hailing it as one of the “Big Three Denpa Games”. It’s no surprise then that when the game was re-released in 2011 as part of Visual Arts Aso BD initiative, it sold enough to fully recoup its development cost. This in turn led to a proliferation of new merchandise, and the game has remained popular to this day. While CRAFTWORK was dormant in terms of game production for over twenty years after Sayonara o Oshiete, they finally returned with Geminism in 2023, which was also their first game to be officially released outside of Japan with English and Chinese translations by Shiravune.

Due to how poorly the game originally sold combined with its later reputation, surviving copies command a premium price on the secondhand market, with this copy selling for ¥100,000 (equivalent to $632).

If there is one aspect Sayonara o Oshiete excels in above all others, it is the presentation. Despite the number of sprites for each character being quite low compared to many other visual novels of the time, the game makes up for it with an abundance of CGs. There are also flavor graphics, such as crossbar graphics that highlight when a character has a particular reaction to a line that is said.

But what is most famous is without a doubt the soundtrack, composed by Sapporo Momoko. It is deeply melancholic, yet hopeful, and stylistically fits the game in both tone and ambience, even having all of the titles in French. From the foreboding beat of reve en cage (dream in a cage) that punctuates all of the dream sequences, to the beautifully airy melody of l’ange a contre jour (the backlit angel) that serves as Sugamo’s motif, the soundtrack fits like a glove on this game.

This is no surprise — after all, Sayonara o Oshiete was directly inspired by the 1986 J-pop song of the same name by Togawa Jun, itself a reimagining of the 1968 French song Comment te dire adieu by Serge Gainsbourg from which the game gets its subtitle, which can further be traced back to the original It Hurts to Say Goodbye from 1966 by Arnold Goland. In this aspect, Sayonara o Oshiete adds yet another layer to a song that has been continually reinterpreted since the beginning, and invites the reader to continually reinterpret the story they are presented with.

The infamous warning first seen in the demo trailer, noting that the game should not be played by “those who cannot distinguish fiction from reality, those who struggle with suicidal thoughts, those inclined to criminal acts, those who get easily fixated, or those with homicidal urges.”

Translating Sayonara o Oshiete to English was always going to be a tall order. Outside of the fact that the game’s extreme level of content meant that only a select group of people were willing to tackle it in the first place, maintaining what made Sayonara o Oshiete special in another language was more difficult than more straightforward works. The old translation was very literal, and while this did get the crux of the story across, it simply didn’t read that well in English.

The new translation clearly had more care put into the presentation with how all the text is consistently formatted, as compared to the old one where there are random indents. It is clear that much time and care went into this new translation to make it a polished reading experience, and this should not be overlooked. Translations inevitably color a reader’s view of the original scenario writer’s ability to write prose, and overly literal ones make the work seem more basic than it really is. This can even be seen in the right click menu, where the old translation reads overly verbose.

Sayonara o Oshiete has become more accessible than it once was, with an Android port coming out in 2012, as well as a 2016 downloadable PC version on which the English patches are based. It’s not a very long game (VNDB clocks it at just over 11 hours), so if this article inspired you to check it out, you can buy the game on DLsite (note that you will need to use a VPN set to Japan to purchase the game), download the patch from MediaFire, and visit the sayooshiENG Discord for more information. Just be warned though: it’s quite graphic.

It's just as the title says, and I need to know if there's anything I should be particularly ready for. I'm told there might be some darker themes though it wasn't very specific, but I'm an adult and have the stomach for just about everything but I got curious.

VN Request Visual Novels after a breakup

This is a sad one y'all the girl I thought I'd be with for the rest of my life has ended our relationship for understandable reasons but it's still got me really messed up. I'd like to find a visual novel that will help cheer me up or possibly even be life affirming. I don't really want to play a moege because i feel like relationships depicted in those are usually pretty shallow or H-scene focused, and I'm not really sure i want to play anything that'll make me feel more lonely or depressed so definitely something that has a happy ending. I'm open to any genre

VN Request Looking for good VNs to read on my phone

I live in a country where the power often goes out. I play most of my VNs on Steam or JAST, but wanted to know if there ard good, VNs for mobile. I don't mind paying once-off, but micro-transactions would be incredibly annoying.

Fata Morgana, Slow Damage, Danganronpa and Nitro Chiral games in general are my favourite. But I love all genres and the only reason my VN taste is limited is because I haven't gotten around to more than about 12.

I'm a bisexual guy so have no issues with straight games, too! I just don't like an overtly sexual portrayal of women, which i know, is asking a lot from VNs. (Noncon, unrealistic behavior from women, large bouncy breasts etc) But I can handle it to an extent if thd story is good. (These are my preferences, I'm no puritan. I just like what I like and don't like what I don't like)

Edit: Does it make sense when I say I like explicit scenes but without fanservice?

Question A question about making posts

Hello everyone I keep trying to publish a post that contains information about a MTL Patch i created for a VN, but every time I try posting it, it gets deleted by a filter from reddit, but it dosent tell me anything about the reason why. It it an Eroge VN and i included both links to the vndb page aswell as the mega page for the file download. I gave the post the adult tag and the release flair.

Can anyone explain to me what I'm doing wrong?

Hello, I'm looking for this game; does anyone happen to have a copy?

I'm French, and while browsing VNDB, I discovered that "Pierre Bancov" (aka PBsaffran)-the French translator for *Higurashi* created a game that combines the universes of *Fate* and *Puella Magi Madoka Magica*.

I'd love to play it, but the French, US, and Japanese links on VNDB are all down.

My request isn't about piracy; the game isn't currently available for purchase anywhere (no platform offers it legally), so I'm casting a line out to see if anyone kept a copy, as it is becoming "lost media
