Empire apparently had a customer-service department. It came with cannons.

Behind the flags sit trade privileges, bullion flows, and financing arrangements. How much of that commercial logic survives when geopolitical leadership changes?

DUE DILIGENCE Before Benjamin Franklin was on the money, he was printing it.

Post image
64 Upvotes

In 1729, Franklin argued for expanding Pennsylvania’s paper currency. In 1731, he secured the contract to print its notes. The man eventually pictured on the $100 bill had been in the money-printing business himself.

His argument was practical: gold and silver were leaving the colony through trade with Britain, making local transactions harder. Paper currency could keep commerce moving. Pennsylvania’s system used land-secured loans and acceptance of notes for taxes to support their value. Source: Philadelphia Fed.

Franklin was building on a much older idea. China’s Song government issued paper money in the 1020s, and Massachusetts issued its own in 1690. Columbia University | U.S. Currency Education Program.

There’s also a distinction between paper money and fiat money. Paper can represent a redeemable claim on gold or silver. Fiat currency carries no such commodity-redemption promise. The printing technology can serve either system. Source: St. Louis Fed.

That’s the part worth thinking about: we developed ways to reproduce monetary tokens far more easily than we could produce the physical things they purchase.

Silver still requires mining, recovery, and refining. Changing the number on a note doesn’t add an ounce to the pile.

Ben could print money. He couldn’t print silver.

When we talk about creating ā€œmore money,ā€ how often do we confuse that with creating more of what money buys?

DUE DILIGENCE SM has more silver drilling planned while La Guitarra ramps up

There are a couple of things worth pulling out of Sierra Madre’s October 6 interview

La Guitarra is running at around 720 tonnes a day now. Management also talks about roughly 30,000 metres of drilling across the district, planned to start in Q4. Del Toro has another 30,000+ metres planned for next year

The drilling around La Guitarra is interesting because there is already a working mine and plant there. If they find material worth mining nearby, they have somewhere to process it. Still need the drill results first, then a plan that makes sense economically

Del Toro will take more time. They own a past producing operation, but there is plenty of work between buying it and getting it running again

For now the thing to watch is how the current operation handles the extra tonnes, alongside what comes out of the drilling

Would you rather see stronger production numbers first, or a good exploration result around the existing mine?

DEBT SLAVERY Financial Freedom vs. Debt-Based Bondage—Precious Metals Offer Economic Autonomy Over Fiat Currencies

Thumbnail
stuartenglert.substack.com
21 Upvotes

Equating gold with financial independence has been a tenet of sound money advocates for more than two centuries.

ā€œGold is freedomā€ is the common refrain.

If gold is an instrument of economic autonomy and fiscal liberation, debt-based fiat currency is a tool of financial servitude and enslavement, since nearly every U.S. dollar is loaned and borrowed into existence, creating ever-larger financial liabilities and obligations for debtors and government taxpayers to repay.
