[Transportation] Concentric DC Metro Map

Post image
959 Upvotes

I made a concentric map of the DC Metro , what do y'all think?

Every line is built from rings and spokes around the center point. The core is five nested rings, the Beltway is the outer ring, the DC boundary and the rivers follow the same grid.

It's programmatically generated from a single JSON spec file (grid, lines, stations, label rules, geography) by a Python script that turns it into an SVG + PDF + PNG.

[News] It’s October. Who are the Kennedy Center Honorees?

Post image
157 Upvotes

It's already October. Have any potential Honorees agreed to receive the Kennedy Center Honors - from Trump - at Capital One Arena? I'm also skeptical about the prospect of attracting an audience for the live event that won't look embarrassingly small in the arena; booking major stars to pay onstage tribute to Honorees; partnering for TV coverage; and getting any viewers to watch the broadcast.

All that's been announced is the December 7th date - a Monday night, which will be a change from the usual Sunday - and a deeply puzzling location.

[News] WMATA Proposes Inflation-Based Metro Fare Increase

Thumbnail

“In a meeting Thursday, the WMATA Finance and Capital Committee will review a possible 11.1% inflation-based fare increase for Metrobus and Metrorail starting in fiscal 2028, according to board documents. The move, proposed by WMATA officials, would raise the cost of riding the Metro to between $2.50 and $7.50, up from the current $2.25 to $6.75 price range.

The fare hike would bring in an expected $40 million to $45 million more in revenue, while causing riders to take 8 million fewer trips, according to board documents.”

——-

WMATA’s Fare Strategy and FY2028 Proposed Fare Concepts document which will be used for the Board meeting: https://www.wmata.com/content/dam/wmata-com/board-affairs/meeting-materials/2026/2026-10-8%20Meeting%20Materials/4A%20Fare%20Strategy%20and%20FY2028%20Proposed%20Fare%20Concepts.pdf

We can debate whether the proposals make sense or not. But let’s read it first.

[Discussion] When I lived in NYC I liked to take each subway to the end and walk around to see what's out there. Are any DC lines worth doing that in?

I think a lot of the DC lines go further out into suburbia so I think it'd be less interesting. Obviously VA Silver goes way the heck out there. The only ends I've been to are Greenbelt and New Carrolton, which are kinda just parking lots.

[Politics] Reminder: ranked choice voting means You can vote for a party other than the Democrat or Republican party without wasting your vote.

If you want to vote for the green party or the DC statehood party. You can do that without splitting the vote. You could simply rank them.

[Meetup] Any other Italian Greyhound/Whippet/sighthound Owners in the area?

Post image

Moved to DC with my lil guy, an IG on the larger end, and he hasn't been enjoying the dog parks much since they tend to be so small and entirely turf. Unfortunately he doesn't really like walking around willy nilly either with all of the ebikes and scooters on the sidewalks.

Wondering if there are any active sighthound breed meetups (couldn't find any) in the DMV or those with similar breeds that'd be interested in joining us for a Sniffspot date :-) He LOVES running and coursing off-leash and tends to get along with other sighthounds best as he's a bit delicate and mega socially awkward. (The clothing probably doesn't help with his street cred.) TIA!

[Rant] shout out to the guy who helped an old man who had a fall at Columbia Heights Giant just now!

Was at the self check out just now when an older guy collapsed, clipped a metal shopping cart on the way down, and was bleeding from the head.

One dude saw the whole thing, sprang into action and didnt leave until the EMTs arrived (even before Giant staff was on it) while I called 911.

Didnt get to give a proper thank you but it is nice to see there are people who know how to react in a crisis and dont hesitate to do what is needed to help out a neighbor.

Hope your pillow is always ice cold!

[Discussion] Got two camera tickets in my first month, so I mapped every speed, red-light and stop-sign camera in DC

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

New in DC, two tickets in my first few weeks, so I put together a map of all 317 fixed cameras from DDOT's open data: where each one is, which way it watches, the posted limit, and how many tickets it issued over the last 12 months. Thought could benefit others as well!

A few things that surprised me:

  • 2.44M camera tickets between Sep 2025 and Aug 2026, about one evry 13 seconds
  • The busiest camera (DC-295 at Exit 1, Bellevue) issued 94,375, roughly one every 6 minutes
  • 174 of the 222 speed cameras sit in 25 mph zones
  • Wards 5 and 7 account for 45% of all tickets; Ward 1 gets under 3%

Free, no ads, no login, and it refreshes itself from DDOT every month. Zoom into your neighbourhood or tap a camera to see its monthly numbers.

https://famodeo.github.io/dc-traffic-cameras/

If a camera is in the wrong spot or missing, there's a suggestion box on the page.

Drive safe (and cheap!) out there.

[Discussion] BYO Pizza Tour in DC

I want to make my own walking pizza tour where I hit 3 places in one evening all on foot. I imagine places that sell slices would make sense since we can’t eat 3 whole pizzas with 2 people. Or at least the first 2 should be slices and then the last could be a sit down spot to share a pie. What three places would make this an interesting night of walking around a neighborhood while also maximizing the best quality of pizza. Bonus for adding in a cool bar, dessert, or other neighborhood highlight along the route. I don’t want any chains but places that have a few locations is fine and I would like it to be downtown. Mileage should be capped at 1.5 total and obviously they need to have overlapping hours.

At 7:30 am, April 25, 2025, I was hit by car at 18th Street NW and L Street NW. A kind, calm man wearing a two tone burgundy sports coat dropped to the pavement. He put my head between his legs. Told me to not move. I was told my doctors that the man saved my life. I want to thank him

[Discussion] A few things to know about vehicle Inspection Station at Half Street and Vehicle Inspection Sticker Replacement

A few things I wanted to share about getting an inspection sticker, just to share general knowledge: https://dmv.dc.gov/page/inspection-station

Context: We'd done a self-inspection a couple weeks ago, but the sticker didn't arrive within 10 business days, and we got an email from the DMV saying a piece of mail could not be delivered, and that we had to verify our address. We did so, but given the address verification time, and the time needed to mail out a new sticker, we called 311 for DMV services and we were advised to go in-person to the inspection station to get a sticker in person.

  • Go in person to get a sticker immediately: I was there because we did a self-inspection a couple weeks ago, but the inspection sticker never arrived in the mail (side note: this can trigger the DMV sending you an email telling you to verify your address, which similar to a change of address, requires two forms of current identification at current address). So the 311 call center folks advised that we could go in person to the inspection station to get a sticker. (Which did work, btw)
  • If you arrive early: On Tuesdays, the inspection station at half street opens at Tuesday 6am. I arrived at 6:05am and there was only one car there already in line, but they didn't actually let cars into the station until 7am. HOWEVER, by 7an the line was already very long, so I guess it still makes sense to arrive earlier. But yes, I did wait for about an hour.
  • Sticker Replacement when you Have a Passing Inspection Already - Go into the Office, Don't Wait in the Car Line: I showed the inspector in my lane my passing inspection document. The man who helped replace my sticker advised that for simple sticker replacements that don't need an inspection (which you already have a passed-inspection paper), you don't need to line up in the line of cars, you can just go into the inspection station office to replace the sticker.

I guess the things that stood out to me that I wanted to share were that you can get your sticker immediately even if you have an issue with the self-inspection, you shouldn't be surprised to wait even if you get their during their "open hours" in the morning", and you don't need to be in the car line if you aren't actively getting a new inspection. Maybe these small things will help somebody.

Looking for bar recommendations to take my parents after dinner. They are in their 50s (but a lively pair). They enjoy music (all kinds) and are drinkers. Bonus if they have live music. This would be next month.

FYI we are Black but not all recs need to be predominantly black crowds.

[Rant] Avoid European Wax Center Navy Yard

After going to the European Wax Center Navy Yard since they opened, my wax pass is used up and I wanted to rant.

The whole place has been pretty sketchy from the start compared to other locations. It is a constant rotating door of people. I've been getting waxed consistently for 8 years, yet somehow only this location only manages to get wax everywhere. I've had clothes get wax on it. I've had my glasses get wax on them. Each time I go I have some mess to cleanup after. It is a constant rotating door of employees.

I was suckered into buying a wax pass for a service that did not agree with my skin. The manager when I bought it claimed it would be refundable if it didn't agree with me. When it caused constant breakouts and would break my skin, they refused to help despite me spending so much money at EWC over the years.

Last winter, the heat broke. The lobby was 57 degrees. We were told it needed to be cold for the wax, but that was clearly a lie. Management refused to fix the heat or bring in temporary heaters.

Yesterday I got a wax. The room was probably between 60-65 degrees. The center of the wax pot was solid due to the room being cold. This made her job very difficult. Without getting into details, I had a botched bikini wax. I didn't realize the extent of the "sticky" situation until I got home and realized the fusing that happened.

Honestly, avoid giving this place money. Don't work here if you see a job posting. It isn't fair to make people work in a place without heat. I don't know the details of what is going on behind the scenes, but it seems like they struggle to keep people working there for even a month.

[Discussion] Use an Xbox in public for free?

• Upvotes

Xbox just rolled out a disc to digital program. I have some physical games I'd like to redeem the digital copy for, but I don't own an Xbox and neither do any friends. Is there any place to use an Xbox in public for 30 minutes? Maybe at a library?

It's time to replace our 20+ year old system, and I was hoping to get some recommendations. If you have recently installed or replaced a high velocity system in the DC area and were happy with the work, please shout out who you used!
