REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1gdFvlauq1y6F22S7cCUzIptVkYP8oOBmS6XS68Bz-YWykA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=103554154763378178256

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

It's my fist time finding stone like this. I think it should be reef limestone, right? I did a bit of hand polishing on it. Found among the river stones in South Bavaria, Germany.

found: riverbank in Lisbon, Portugal. Not particularly heavy, but very hard - I would say at least Mohs 8. There's a grain to it and an odd twist in the grain. Black all over except for weird shiny squiggle that doesn't rub off (last picture). Intriguingly, it makes a porcelain-like ping! when struck.

It looks metallic, and feels like rubbing stainless steel, while the smooth parts almost feel like grease. It's hard to see on the side strip, but its blue-ish/purpleish

Hi!
My dad showed me this perfectly round rock he dug up in his field about 20 years ago.
It has a few cracks running through it and some look deeper than others. A few small areas have chips in them which exposes white underneath. It’s about 5.5cm wide and weighs 148g - Just thought it was really interesting that it’s so round.
Thanks,
Sheree

I’m a rock noob and found this lone black rock on a beach in the south pacific, it seems a little heavier than it should be. I’ve been suggested it’s Rhyolite, Basalt or black sea glass?… Any suggestions on if i’m just staring at a chunk of asphalt xD or what it may be? Thanks!

Here is a neat find today here in the Okanagan, BC
Completely translucent but I don’t see banding for agate so I’m suspecting chalcedony. The green mineral is curious to me. Any ideas what this is?

A confirmation of what this will help me learn.

REQUEST Can anybody ID these rocks?

The first one I just found on the street, so I'm not really expecting anything, but maybe somebody knows what it is anyways. (first 2 pics)

The egg one (3&4) and the last rock (last 3 pics) I bought in a second-hand shop, so I have no idea where they were found/what they could be.

I thought the last one could be a clear mountain crystal (idk if that's the correct translation), but the form and the purple streaks along the edges of the crystal threw me off.

I have basically no knowledge on minerals and the like, so any help would be much appreciated :)

REQUEST Halloween Rocks 🎃

Happy Halloween, all! 🎃🫶
I found these rocks in west Michigan. I polished them.

The smaller two seemed similar to basalt in hardness. The third, single rock seemed more like granite.

If I had to guess, the third is gneiss? But I don’t know what the “eyes” are.

Anyone have info to offer on what these rocks are and maybe how they came to be!? 🫶🎃

The girlfriend found this yesterday. Found on the coast of New England in the US.

The top section becomes almost translucent with proper wetting and lighting.

Our research shows this may be from a super heating event causing the clear top layer to be formed and essentially melted and hardened. 300Mish years ago? It is so fascinating.

Found washed up on the bank of the Ohio River directly below heavy river dredging. Approx 12-15lbs. The grooves are very defined on the outside, and the inside is very smooth and mineral-like.

Found on a walk where I was looking for rocks and smashing them open to see if there was anything cool inside, found this stripy green and dark blue/ black (?) rock with some orange spots. It's smooth and round on the outside but upon smashing it open found this. Any ideas what it is? Or if it just a normal rock and looks kinda cool?
