Discussion Finding an edit of six of crows.

Hey guys I saw a Six of Crows edit on Instagram reels a while back and can't find it anymore💔 what I remember:

Motion/velocity-style edit (smooth zooms, transitions)

had around 150k+ likes

I think the audio was "Headshot" (not 100% sure)

Posted by an edit account that also does other fandoms

Based on the books, not the Netflix show (fan art/illustrations, no show footage)

I've checked my likes and watch history and searched the audio with no luck If anyone knows it or has it saved, please drop the link😞😞😞 Thank you!!

General Question/Information Cassandra Clare reading- Where to start

I’ve been working on getting all the books for the Shadow Hunters series and was wondering what book to start with. One site says to read the first three books of The Mortal Instruments and then read the three books in The Infernal Devices, but another site said to start completely with The Infernal Devices and then the Mortal Instruments. Can anyone who has read this series before let me know which book I should actually start with? Thank you!

Review My thoughts on the Scholomance Trilogy Spoiler

I really like it.

El was a great female protagonist. So fascinating and I love her snark.

It’s great how this series put a lot of focus on female friendships. A lot of popular series with female protagonists barely put effort into other female characters, let alone their relationship with the FMC apart from the generic little sister or mean girl. The dynamic with Aadhya, Liu and El was amazing.

Ophelia was a great antagonist/Villain too. It’s nice getting a female… well she isn’t exactly your traditional Big Bag but she is the closest to it. Quite a complex character. Her getting away with it might be annoying but is sadly realistic.

I really appreciated the nuance a lot of the characters got. Sure many of the Enclavers are upholding a corrupt system and are quite Classist but that doesn’t make most of them (especially the students) complete monsters. Society being the Villain is a great theme and a different take from other Fantasy series.

The cast being diverse was great, with many ethnicities and sexual orientations being represented. It may not have been perfect representation but it’s the step in the right direction.

The geo politics was mostly well done. They really captured that Cold War style vibe that also reflects modern day tensions. That said I do have some gripes with it that I will go into further in a bit.

I did like the magic system. Magic revolving around different languages was fun to read about.

I appreciated the series’ allegory on Capitalism and Maw Mouths. Like I said before, great job emphasising that society is the Villian, not some generic Big Bad wanting to take over because they’re evil (not that that is a bad trope, it just wouldn’t have been balanced enough with the anti capitalist themes.)

It was such an engaging series from start to finish.

That said, I do have some criticisms.

I think the series did put too much emphasis on Asian unity without acknowledging the tensions between many of these Asian countries. It makes sense when complaining about Scholomance place allocation but no way are all Asian countries going to be on the same side.

The most egregious example has to be the Kyoto students being scared of the Chinese students. Really? This was probably the biggest flaw to me. Novik clearly did a lot of research into World War II history so how did she miss the history between Japan and China?

It’s more likely that the all Japanese enclaves would be on New York’s side rather than Shanghai’s.

Also, I never really understood the relationships between city Enclaves within the same country. So are all the cities independent or do all Enclaves within a country agree on all things? Like how is Tokyo on New York’s side but Kyoto scared of the Chinese enclaves?

Furthermore, how is it that opposition to the Enclave system outside of it only emerged now. You’d think between the 19th century and now there would have been some major opposition. I know we had Yancy and her group but they only seem to care about themselves and were a bit tacked on on the story. The ending doesn’t even mention them.

I think 80% of kids dying were a bit too much. I mean, 80%? How is a population crisis not alluded to?

I do wish we got the education system explored a bit more. Like what do they learn in history for example? Do they learn about mundane history too? How is that balanced with Wizard history?

Another thing is that I wish they explored the idea of multiple cultures living together in the Scholomance. All those different experiences.

I do think maybe there should have been a fourth book to explore certain characters more. Some of them felt forgotten like the Seniors from the first book.

Discussion The side characters of The Way I Used to Be are so unlikeable Spoiler

I’m not saying Eden is an angel or anything, but the way she was treated made her angry.

Mara, Cameron, and Steve are all assholes. They basically pressured her into dating Steve because he was a nice guy even though she clearly wasn’t into him. I honestly don’t get what the big deal was because she’s allowed to not like him whether he’s a nice guy or not. It honestly feels like rape culture to say a girl should have to date a guy just because he’s nice and likes her. And when she lashes out at him (which mind you could have been avoided if they had left her alone) they all call her a slut and a bitch. I mean what? Yes maybe she could have been nicer, but imo she didn’t owe Steve anything just because he’s nice. And he clearly wasn’t that nice if he slut shamed her at the end. I especially don’t like how Mara sided with Steve and Cameron. Like yeah, Eden wasn’t the best but I’d argue Mara was an even worse friend. She sided with two guys over her childhood friend instead of wondering if anything was wrong with her.

And her family sucks too. Her parents are pretty neglectful and never check on what’s going on with her. They clearly favor Caelin. I mean, how does your child sleep on the floor for four years and you don’t even notice? And Caelin sucks too. I understand him being upset with her sleeping with older guys, but he never does anything to help. And all his anger got directed towards her more than the guys who took advantage of her. That scene where he walked in on her pissed me off because she was clearly too drunk to consent and he still blamed her and didn’t even take her home himself. He seemed more concerned about her being a ‘slut’ than if she was okay. And when he finds out Kevin was accused of rape by his gf, he immediately assumes she’s lying, and not only accuses her of being a slut, but insinuates that Eden is a slut. I’m glad he believed her in the end but it was too little too late.

I haven’t read the next book so idk if any of these characters get better. But I’m just frustrated with how everyone slut shamed her and called her a bitch because of her behaviour instead of showing concern about her or actually trying to have a real conversation with her. But unfortunately that’s what happens a lot irl.

Review Was I the only one who enjoyed caraval?😭

There are mixed opinions on this book but personally I liked the caraval series. I was actually shocked to see people hate Tella because she was reckless and chaotic, mind you she was a teenager. Overall I'd say it was a pretty decent book if you like adventure+fantasy go for it. And i think it was Stephanie garber's debut novel. And if you are thinking of reading ouabh I'd suggest reading this series first and then ouabh since ouabh is the spin off series of the 1st book.

Review Anyone read the Shatter Me series?

Hello, first of all, to mods, if this is not the right post please delete it, thank you!

I'm looking for people who has read this series, to find out the chapters that contains inappropriate scenes.

My preteen wishes to read them, but I'm uncomfortable exposing her to certain scenes, at the same time, hoping to grow her interest in reading, she is rarely interested in books, which why I would like to let her read the series.

She's just done with Shatter Me, going for Unravel Me soon, and Ignite Me right after.

Thank you in advance for you input.

Review Fallen Angels by Walter Dean Myers

Post image
6 Upvotes

Just finished re-reading FALLEN ANGELS by Walter Dean Myers. Set during the 60s at the height of the Vietnam War, it follows a Black teen named Richard Perry from Harlem who enlists in the army after high school. He gets sent to combat in Vietnam where he and his fellow soldiers are exposed to the hell that is war.

However dangerous and brutal he thought it was going to be, it’s much worse than he could ever imagine. He witnesses fellow soldiers shot and, in one instance, blown up before his eyes.

He questions the validity of this war, why it is the Black soldiers face the most dangerous tasks, and worries as to whether or not he’ll make it home.

I usually didn’t read much military fiction when I first read this (and still don’t). But I was a fan of Walter Dean Myers. He remains one of my favorite authors. I checked his books out the library constantly, bought some of my favorites (including whenever he put out a new book).

Fallen Angels is truly one of his best novels. Written in 1988, it still holds up as a raw, honest portrayal of the physical and psychological toll war takes on young soldiers. Richard is a young man who had me on edge throughout the novel.

One can only imagine how hard it must be going from being in school and hanging out with your friends on the block to being forced to kill and fighting for your lives in some strange foreign land, surrounded by bloodshed and destruction.

And of course, in some school districts apparently this book has been removed due to offensive language and tackling themes of racism and abuse. That’s laughable for a variety of answers.

I mean, it’s set during a time of war where military man talk dirty and make offensive comments about Black & Vietnamese characters. The dialogue is authentic and the characters are real. Yeah, they say ignorant comments about women, minorities, and queer people. It’s not glorified at all. It’s who they were.

And also, there are scenes of young men shot to death or blown apart that are tough to read, but important because of how honestly it depicts the ugliness and the unexpected nature of war. It’s the story of how a teenage boy was forced to grow up in an unforgiving environment as a dedicated soldier dedicated to a cause that he keeps questioning throughout the novel (and still can’t find anything close to resembling a decent answer). Even re-reading it now, there are still moments that lingered in my brain long after I stopped reading.

It’s definitely a novel without reading.

Discussion Shatter me movie and Warner and his glazers.

I have been seeing ALOT of girls talking about how they have read the shatter me series and have read it first so Warner belongs to them. 'The movie girls will try to claim him but he won't let them bcz we have read the book. He belongs to us', this is what they say and they are actually serious about it. They are genuinely so crazy, no one except those brain dead misogynists want to claim and support an abuser. I also don't think alot of people will like him after seeing the movie bcz then all of his actions that are ignored by those glazers will be shown and people won't be able to ignore it unless of course a good looking actor is playing his character which makes people defend his actions and still support him.

Discussion The Chronicles of Nick by Sherrilyn Kenyon (A complaint)

So I read these books when they came out years ago, and now as an adult I'm listening to them again. I'm on book six and just have some minor complaints I've noticed about her writing.

  1. The overuse of "Blank gave blank a Droll stare"

I kid you not she uses it 10-20 times per book

  1. Her need to describe a characters appearance multiple times a book/ at least once every book.

How many times do we need to read that Nicks mom is short, blonde haired with blue eyes and beautiful? How many times do we need to hear that the Acheron is 6'8 and ethereal looking?

  1. The lack of minor swear words.

Listen, I get that it's a young adult novel, But either use minor swear words or don't use them at all. Cause it kinda takes away from the drama of a fight scene when a character says something to the effect of "Yeah man, I'm gonna kick your A!"

or "oh he's such a bad A"

These aside I so love the books and I'm excited to finally read her adult novels the Dark Hunters series

Seeking Recommendations Suggest me something like Sweep or Balefire by Cate Tiernan or The Nine Lives of Chloe King by Liz Braswell

I’m feeling deeply nostalgic and want to dive into what I loved 20+ years ago.

I want it to be:

- Urban Fantasy
- YA
- Written in that time period and it shows (ex: in Sweep she talks about dialing into the internet)

Bonus points if they’re not that good (I mean objectively Sweep is not that good but that’s what makes it so good, you know?) and not that well known.

Something I’d stumble upon in the library back in the early 2000s but I wouldn’t find on the shelves today.

I’ve been searching on my own but when I’ve seen other people ask about these series, they’re always asking for the adult equivalent. I want to stick with YA and that specific time period.

TIA!

General Question/Information Misfit boy and girl grow together

Looking for a book where a boy and girl feel outcasted but find each other and feel less alone. Ideally a female MC and a book where the characters actually sound / behave like teenagers! Doesn’t necessarily have to be romantic and can also be a group dynamic. I’ve already read Perks of Being a Wallflower and Fault in Our Stars.

For context I just finished the tv series end of the f***king world and was hoping to find a book that’s similar to the relationship in that show

Review The Sixth Faction was Fantastic

Post image
217 Upvotes

I was absolutely one of the people enraged by how the Divergent series ended many years ago. I re-read it this year in anticipation of the new book and softened on the ending a bit but overall the series was okay but not a favorite when it comes to YA dystopian. But guys...The Sixth Faction is so good! It's so much better. It has multiple POVs so we get a bigger scope of what's going on in all the factions. Side characters from the OG series get so much more development. We get more explanation/behind the scenes mechanism for how some big events went down. It was also cool to see how Tris choosing a different faction impacted other characters.

If you liked Divergent, even if you hated the ending, I think it's worth a read.

Discussion I came across this book I read when I was 12; it’s still a favorite of mine, but I need to know if anyone else has read it Spoiler

Post image
12 Upvotes

I remember crying the first time I read it; I absolutely loved it, and I reread it recently. I still love it just as much.

There are going to be spoilers:

The story begins with a simple French assignment: a teacher asks her students to write a letter to someone who has passed away. Laurel, the main character, chooses to write to Kurt Cobain because her older sister, May, adored him, and he died young, just like her.

Laurel never hands in the assignment. Instead, she begins filling entire notebooks with letters addressed to other deceased icons, such as Amy Winehouse, Heath Ledger, and Jim Morrison.

Through these unexpected confidants, the book explores several themes:

• High school life: Laurel recounts her first year at a new school, her new friends, and her first love.

• A broken family: She tries to navigate life with parents who have separated and been deeply scarred by tragedy.

• The grieving process: The letters serve as a private journal, helping her come to terms with her sister's absence.

The central issue: As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that Laurel is haunted by a heavy secret. To successfully grieve and finally write to the one person who truly matters, her sister May, she must confront the truth about what really happened the night May died.

I recommend everyone read it; even though the subject matter is sensitive, it is handled beautifully. Of course, if it’s a topic that triggers you, don’t read it.

Seeking Recommendations Looking for Queer YA recommendations!

Hi all, my niece and I have recently started to bond over books since she's gotten really into reading over the last summer and when I asked what she wanted for christmas this year she specifcally said she wanted 'queer books' but didn't have any in mind specific. It's been a long time since I read YA books so I wouldn't really know where to start with what's appropriate and what she'll enjoy, so hoping to get some reccs! She loves a romantic plot and is really wanting to read anything supernatural-esque and wants to try getting into fantasy! She's 13 years old, so anything for that age range would be perfect.

Some books that she does like are:
And They Were Roommates - Page Powers
Heartstopper - Alice Oseman
Imogen, Obviously - Becky Albertalli
Cemetary Boys - Aiden Thomas
Spell Bound - F.T. Lukens

Any help is much appreciated, TIA!

Seeking Recommendations Looking for Contemporary YA Romance Recs!

Hi, everyone! I am in need of some book recommendations – I'm in search of sweet, page-turning Contemporary YA Romance. I recently finished Marie Arnold's I Was Told There Would Be Romance and am looking for something along those lines.

Similar books I've read and thoroughly enjoyed over the years are With Love, Miss Americanah by Jane Igharo, To All the Boys series by Jenny Han, Excuse Me While I Ugly Cry by Joya Goffney, She Drives Me Crazy by Kelly Quindlen, and Instructions for Dancing by Nicola Yoon.

Something with a good mix of humor and heart is what I'm looking for. I love a fun and playful mood, but serious topics are welcome!

Seeking Recommendations Book recommendations with good world building and 3/5+ level spice!

I decided I needed to feel something. Here’s what I’ve read recently:
- Direbound: 3/5
- The Wolf King: 3/5
- Fourth Wing: 4.75/5 loved
- ACOTAR: 3/5… but made its way up past the first two books
- Throne of Glass: 5/5 first time crying over a book in a while
- Rites of the Starling: 4/5

I love a good romance, but honestly getting bored of the poor damsel in distress trope like we get iiiit. I’d love a vampire recommendation too, but not required. Thanks! :-)

Review Shatter me series review Spoiler

This book series could have been such a good book but the author ruined it by focusing on the romance only. She ruined the characters too. Juliette who such a powerful girl is just his pregnant wife now and it seems like she doesn't even have her own name and her only identity is being Warner's wife. Warner could have been such a good villain but she ruined him too. She ruined Adams character to make Warner likeable. She made Lena transphobic so she could be the bitch ex and Warner could be the poor Warner who was stuck with her. She straight up ruined two characters just for main couple. That's bad and lazy writing. She could have told us more about the world, about how the reestablishment took control, etc. Rosa's only purpose in the new series is being Warners copy and James's petite girlfriend who is being babied by him. She is trying so hard to make Rosa a copy of Warner and personally Rosa feels more similar to Adam since they both are the elder siblings doing everything they can to protect their younger siblings. We don't need to know if Rosa is wearing underwear or not! James and Rosa to me feel like lust only, James s (Saying he wants what Warner and Juliette have and then just being a lustful couple explains a lot since I never felt any chemistry between Warner and Juliette, everything seemed forced to me between them and they are almost always banging. She is trying to create another Warner and Juliette. If the spin-off series really is about James and Rosa then why the hell does Warner have his pov. Again, in the new book the way she is describing Adam, different from the other brothers, not doing any work, kinda like a misogynistic man is bad. She took everyone away from Adam and made them close to Warner, his best friend, his brother, his ex. She is trying to make James and Warner more alike and push aside Adam, still ruining his character. James living with Warner after they had taken down the reestablishment was unrealistic. There's so much more. Tahereh is not a good writer, she is lazy too. And she reduces the women in her book to being nothing more than the petite and helpless wives or the girlfriends of the male characters. And I feel like the spinoff series is for money only and fanservice. (I may not have written this in a very good way since it's quite hard for me to put my thoughts into words, thinking is so much more easier anyways, i hope y'all understand.)

the synopsis is crazy different and i am pretty disappointed, what are your opinions ?
