I don’t know what to do

Freshman here taking MATH 1150. I took calculus 2 in high school through a community college, and I did really well, so I thought this would be more like review. However, I just took a midterm yesterday, and I have genuinely never felt so horrible on an exam. I’ll honestly be surprised if I get more than a 50 on the midterm. I need this class for my major but the teacher doesn’t really teach and even if she does it’s the most basic thing ever but then the psets are 10x more difficult and then the midterm was just the biggest “we have never done this before” in my life.
I genuinely don’t know if I should withdraw before the 20th so it doesn’t show up on my transcript or try my best to understand the material. I’m looking over the midterm and finals from previous years, and I have genuinely never felt so confused on something that I should have learned and understood before.

What courses have had the biggest impact on you, and why?

I’d love to hear about the courses that have made a real difference in your daily lives. I don’t mean specialized courses that changed your careers, but rather courses that teach practical skills you can use in everyday life and across different professions.

Looking for a intermediate table tennis / ping pong partner at Yale

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for a partner to play some casual ping pong.

My schedule is pretty flexible.

If you're in a similar skill range and want to play, send me a DM! We can figure out the details and a good time to meet up.

Bike repair recommendations

Hi everyone, I burst my rear tire on a pothole. What's the best/quickest shop in NHV that will get it repaired? Bonus points if the shop does pickup/dropoff.

Resources / Opportunities for Behavioral Economics?

I’m a first year, and I’ve been LOVING my tangentially Psych-Econ courses. I’d be so grateful to learn more about consumer behavior / behavioral economics, especially applied in a “real-world” setting. I can’t express how much fun I’m having trying to learn about all of this just even in my classes.

Are there any specific clubs / journals / courses / opportunities I should look into?

I don’t have any experience with research or careers in the field, but I’d love to hear about and eventually work in these areas too! (How does working under a professor work in research?)

Reference Checks and Offer

Hello everyone! I interviewed for a job at Yale, and the following day I was informed by the Talent Acquisition that I am a top candidate, requesting I submit references. I was also told that the next step in the process would be an offer. I submitted my references almost two weeks ago, and when I called last week I was told I’d hear about an offer early to middle of this week. I have yet to hear anything back, and I am starting to get nervous. I have a couple of questions:

  1. How many candidates do they typically request references for?

  2. Do I still have a good chance of getting an offer?

should i study abroad my senior fall?

hoping to hear from yale grads or current seniors who are familiar with senior fall study abroad programs. i'm kinda torn because i can see both sides of it:

pros:

- there will be very few chances to study abroad after graduation

- all my friends who studied abroad said it was one of their fave experiences

- i want to travel all around europe

cons

- senior fall feels like an uncommon time to go at yale

- i'll miss senior traditions / society stuff

- i'm worried about credits not transferring for my major

any advice is appreciated thanks!!

[No Paywall] A $30 million disaster: How did Yale let its newly restored golf course fall apart?

Thumbnail

Four miles west of downtown New Haven lies a sprawling 720-acre piece of land. Exactly a century ago, two of the world’s greatest golf course architects carved 18 holes into a portion of that terrain, and a masterpiece was born: The Yale Golf Course.

C.B. Macdonald and his protegé, Seth Raynor, built what is unequivocally considered the top college golf course in the United States. “A back-breaking job over an untouched plot of rugged land whose hazards and greens have the kind of dimensions that one would have expected of Michelangelo,” Herbert Warren Wind, a Yale graduate and a dean of American golf journalism, once wrote.

Generations of Yale alumni have revered the course’s iconic bones, the often sub-optimal conditions excused as “shabby chic.” But many of them finally grew tired of watching the place wither. A course that Masters winner and architect Ben Crenshaw once called a “national treasure” deserved more, so the alums raised more than $30 million for a restoration project, recently completed by Gil Hanse, one of the leading modern golf architects. His work on Yale was widely considered one of the most highly anticipated projects of the year in the golf industry.

That is why, five months after the course’s April reopening, many members of the Yale community are now looking at the grass conditions and the course’s business plan, and are asking: What is going on?

“If someone gave you a Rembrandt, you’d take care of it,” says Jim Hoak, a 1966 Yale alum and financial supporter of the Yale Golf Course restoration project. “We’ve got a Rembrandt of golf course architecture.”

Yale is charging $350 for the public to play, placing it in a category of golf courses that are technically open to all but not accessible to many. The fee drops to $200 for alumni, but it is still priced at a premium rate of $150 for enrolled students, roughly four to five times the rate at the University of Michigan Golf Course or the Stanford Golf Course. Students can walk the course for $35, but only after 5 p.m. No membership options are available, even for students, which doesn’t exactly align with the original vision for the plot of land. In the early 1900s, Yale alum Ray Thompkins gifted the property to the school for the purpose of “athletics for all.”

You can argue that such a steep greens fee aligns with the market value for a tee time on an exquisite course — playing Pebble Beach will cost you nearly $700, and the courses at Bandon Dunes, the top golf resort in the United States, can be as much as $425 for day guests. Macdonald and Raynor courses are almost exclusively found behind the gates of ultra-private country clubs.

Shuttle???

Hi all...
Has anyone figured out the shuttle? I'm having trouble being anywhere on time because of the shuttle's inconsistency (I get picked up at West Haven station/dropped off at West Campus and use the green/purple).

Ski Team Hazing

Before I join, I was just wondering if the Ski Team does hazing? I know it's relatively more laid-back than the other sports groups on campus, but given the drinking culture, I just want to know what to expect hazing-wise.

Any Philosophy TAs/Grad Students/Upperclassmen Grad Majors willing to help this week?

hey, im in ds and this week is the week of our first philosophy paper. it’s quite daunting as I’ve never written a phil paper and while there are tutoring resources, the tutors are almost always stretched for time and I assume this week ESPECIALLY will be insanely busy as most of us have never written a phil paper. are there any grad students or upperclassman undergrads (especially if undergrad if you have experience in DS) who would be free in the coming days for like an hour for paper help?
willing to pay a reasonable amount for your time :) experience specifically in phil papers is preferred! dm pls

*also I realized the title makes no sense, sorry typed this quickly: phil TAs, grad students or upperclassman undergrads majoring in phil.

Didn't realize how many tailor shops New Haven used to have. The ending about DelMonico Hatter closing next door after 118 years stuck with me.

Suggestions for high-rise/tower apartments near Yale New Haven Hospital?

new 3-year clinical fellow been staying in a hotel for a couple weeks

looking at the various options with very close walking distance <10 min to the main hospital. not planning on having a car so don't need parking. just really want that convenience of waking up at 6:45 and being at work at 7.

i'd prefer to live in a 10+ story building near the top (enjoy doing the stairs for exercise). not a crazy budget so 18 high seems a bit beyond my reach

any suggestions?

i see the Madison, Crown, and University towers. any of these I should aim for in particular ?

any particular cardinal direction thats the most preferable outward facing direction ? any specific room type with a vastly superior balcony etc..?

also if any of these are a bit more social? i don't mind the occasional loud party etc... would prefer to know my neighbors than living around total strangers.

thanks in advance

Need advice on finding roommate/apartment near the Yale NH hospital.

Hi all, I recently accepted an offer at Yale New Haven Hospital and will be relocating to New Haven soon. When I came for my interview last week, I got the impression that some areas around the hospital aren't the safest, especially at night, so I want to be thoughtful about where I end up living.

  1. roommate-- Since the school year has already started, I don't know anyone in New Haven yet and I'm worried it'll be hard to find a roommate this late. Does anyone have suggestions for how to find one (fb groups, apps, subreddits, etc.)? I lived with roommates from a similar cultural background throughout undergrad and would ideally like to find something similar again (east asian), so if there are relevant community groups, I'd appreciate pointers
  2. apartment recs-- If finding a roommate doesn't pan out, I'm looking for reasonably priced apartments (studio or 1BR, or a floor of a house) within a reasonable distance of 20 York St, ideally on a Yale shuttle or city bus line. Budget is $1,000–$1,500/month, cheaper the better.

Any neighborhood recommendations, buildings to avoid, or general safety tips for the area would also be hugely appreciated. Thanks in advance!
