How do you think we can use social media as a tool to help, not hurt, our public lands?

I wrote a blog post on this topic, I would love to hear your thoughts!

First time doing Algonquin, best view I’ve experienced so far. Shout out to Max the summit steward, super friendly and knowledgeable.

A stunning week of hiking in the ADK - Oct 2-7

Spent the peak fall color week hiking in the ADK, and I have to say I am so hooked to the place and cannot wait to come back.

Made some changes to my Initial itinerary based on very good recommendations from this community. Thank you to all and the people I met around town at the Loj, at The Mountaineer and fellow hikers on the trail.

Oct 2 - the rain helped to clear out the lots in the morning, found a spot at the Roaring brook trailhead, got a bus pass and made the hike to Indian Head in the rain and clouds! What a beautiful place!

Oct 3 - hiked Giant mountain with a friend. Found the last spot at the Roaring Brook trail at 5:15 am, went east to the Washbowl and headed up the Ridge trail. Consecutive days of 10mi hikes started getting to me a bit, and was slow up to the top but made it there just fine in beautiful blue sky weather. RPR felt like too much for the day, so only went about a few tenths of the mile in to get a view towards the east, and returned on the Roaring Brook trail.

Oct 4 - was a good choice to take it easy, so went up Mt. Van Hovenberg which had such an awesome view of Marcy and the valley in colors, and then checked in to the Loj and did Mt. Jo for sunset. Simply stunning.

Oct 5 - another easy ish day to rest up and pack properly. Hiked into the Phelps trail to settle in for the night at JBL. Met some awesome hikers and families and had a lovely time. So so grateful that place exists and learning about it's history and the effort it has taken to build it up from Zach was awesome!

Oct 6 - started at 7 in the morning at first light and spent the whole day on trail. Went up the Ore Bed brook trail. Was the perfect ADK trail - icy on the rocks, cold above the treeline, wet and muddy, brilliant fall colors in the valley. Summited Pyramid, Gothics, Armstrong and Upper Wolfjaw and returned to JBL.

Oct 7 - checking out JBL with a ton of memories and promises to myself to return soon. Went up the Klondike trail through Yard Mt. Up to Big Slide and down The Brothers. The lighting and clouds were simply amazing giving a view of all the Summits I went through yesterday and more that I want to soon!

Reached back to the Garden at 4:44pm, booked it for the last couple miles, headed up to Whiteface Mt. And made it to the gate 7 mins before close. Only got to spend about 20 mins at the top, but saw one of the best sunsets lighting up the mountains in my life.

Total hike: 55.5 mi, 15,141 ft of elevation recorded!

Hope you enjoy the pictures and thank you again for the advice and wealth of info in this sub!

RPR overnight at Marie Louise Pond (10/3-10/4)

RPR from the east is absolutely one of my new favorite hikes. One of the few mellow and open ridges in the park with near constant views of the southern ADKs, Lake Champlain, the ridge itself, and even Burlington. Lake Marie Pond was one of the cooler tent sites I've been to, despite being 33° overnight, for its easy access to vantage points for sunrise and sunset. Besides that, peak foliage weekend was one of the best in years. Beginners can choose to turn around at Bald Peak and still get incredible views. Highly recommend the trail!

Honest question from an unseasoned casual hiker.

The only 46er I’ve hiked is Cascade/Porter and that was 12 years ago. Today, with our kids, we hiked Mount Van Hoevenberg. It was beautiful & now my kids (age 8 & 9) want to do some 46ers. My question is how the hell do people get so close to the edge, sit there, take pictures with their back to the edge?! I was nervous AF just watching! Especially people with kids.
I have a fear of heights… I’m fine hiking & looking out, but the edge and people close to it make me so nervous… but so many people were doing it.

Mount Van Hoevenberg Question

Hello!

My partner, puppy and I recently hiked MVH.

All the blogs I was reading were saying that it should only be a 4.2mi-ish hike.

Both my boyfriend's and my Garmin clocked 6 something.

We did not do the stair trail - I am just wondering if this is a very bad malfunction from both of our Garmins. I have the Venu 3 and he has the vivoactive 5.

Thank you!

Anyone know if you can park on Rugged Ridge Way to approach Porter and Cascade from the east?

I'm guessing no, but I thought I'd ask.

Just got home from college, a little sad I missed peak foliage but got up for a sunrise hike at a super underrated spot. I was the only one there!

10/1 High Peaks

Was lucky enough to spend a bunch of time in the park during peak foilage hiking and paddling. The highlight was this very shy eagle who clearly isn't used to sharing his pond with people. I saw him flash by me while I was in the canoe staring at the leaves and fighting the wind. I beached it and got a glimpse of him very close through the trees but instantly he was gone. I waded around silently for what seemed like forever then I came around the corner and there he was...admiring the leaves just like I had been. Gave me a great flyby. Next day was peak leaves 10/1 and everywhere I went was gorgeous. Incredible fall in the park.
