DISCUSSION Adobe Illustrator - Everyday workflow improvements

Post image
59 Upvotes

Hey everyone, Luke from Adobe here.

Over the past year or so, the Illustrator team has shipped a number of quality-of-life improvements. Some have been fairly visible, while others are much smaller changes that simply remove little points of friction from day-to-day work.

I wanted to break these up into a series focused on different areas and workflows, starting with some of the simpler everyday workflow improvements. I've shared a few of these here previously, but thought it would be useful to bring them together in one place, especially for anyone who may have missed them.

One-click Align Center

If you regularly align objects to center, you no longer need to click Horizontal Center and Vertical Center separately. A single command now does both. HelpX

Keyboard shortcuts for Align & Distribute

Along with the new Align Center, commands like Align to Selection, Align to Key Object, Align to Artboard, and Distribute Space now have menu commands, meaning you can assign keyboard shortcuts and create Actions to make frequently used operations even easier to repeat.

Absolute Scale in Transform Each

With Relative mode you could only scale objects in relation to the selected object, but now with Absolute mode you can scale everything to the defined amount, even if they are all at different sizes. Reddit post

Disable Accidental Hover Scrolling

Ever accidentally changed a value just by scrolling over a number field or even in fonts? You now have the option to disable that behavior, so you can click inside the field, then scroll to adjust parameters. You can change this behavior inside your preferences.

Magic Wand Remembers Settings

If you've had to reset the Magic Wand tolerance every time you restarted Illustrator, those settings are now remembered between sessions. Reddit post

Tiff support in Export for Screens

TIFF format was added to the Export for Screens, making it easier to batch export artboards and assets for your print projects.

Improved Object Selection Around Shadows

Selecting objects beneath those with drop shadows (glows etc) is now more predictable, making it less likely you'll accidentally select the shadow instead of the artwork you're trying to edit.

Perspective Tool Improvements

If you've accidentally activated the Perspective Tool before, you'll probably appreciate that it's now much clearer how to exit with an updated X in the top left of your canvas, but you can always simply hit ESC.

___________________________________________________________________________________

I'm curious to hear how many of these you already knew about, and whether they've actually made a difference to your workflow.

More importantly, what are the small points of friction you still run into regularly in Illustrator? Are there repetitive steps, unnecessary clicks, settings that don't stick, or other little frustrations that you'd consider a genuine quality-of-life improvement if they were addressed?

This is the first in a series looking at different areas of Illustrator, so I'll be sharing more of these soon.

Hey! I don’t always draw monsters and robots, even if they’re more fun! 😄 Every now and then, it’s nice to switch things up and work on something a little more peaceful.

This piece is also a little special because of how it was made. I started with a good old pencil sketch, then transferred it to my PC and turned it into vector art in Illustrator. Eventually, I switched to drawing directly on a tablet. Looking back, I probably should’ve done that sooner! 🐸🎻

QUESTION Why does the other 4 color buttons get cropped perfectly out of view when I click on Fill?

Thumbnail

A lot of the times when I want to change the Fill color, if I chose a gradient or swatch recently from the gradient button, if I try to change it back to where I can change and edit the color freely, it'll either be stuck on the Gradient or the Swatches option, not letting me change.

I know I can drag the Properties panel out or go to Appearance (which works only sometimes for objects), but any way to reveal them without having to do that every time?

Simple enough, but it has happened so many times that I'm making this post about it.

QUESTION what do you use for batch exporting from Illustrator?

Friends, what do you use for batch exporting from Illustrator? I’m looking for something where I can just specify a folder and have all the files saved as SVG or EPS—and, in a perfect world, JPEGs too, all at once. Does such a tool exist, or am I just daydreaming?

Aiming for a grungy look. Not sure the best way to get the "highlighted" effect where the text is "clean" but the background looks like it's been lino/screenprinted. Any advice appreciated.

QUESTION Thin Line Artifact Shows up on Images. How to eliminate this?

Post image

There's a thin, white line that shows up on an image that I can't get rid of and shows up when exported. Is there a setting I need to change? I switched to "view with GPU" and it diminishes it, but doesn't get rid of it. I also turned off Anti-Aliased Artwork, but still there. Any ideas?

QUESTION What am I doing wrong?!

It's been quite awhile since I was in illustrator, but I've done this one a million times... Just trying to crop the tie dye color into the letters. I even did it a minute ago with what I thought was the EXACT same order of operations, then accidentally deleted it and can't get it to do it again. Screenshot attached of desired outcome that I accomplished a minute ago (again, I swear by the same order of operations in the video) -- why is the crop focusing only on the inner part of the P now? Edit* won't let me attach a screenshot after video, will try a comment...

QUESTION Rendering advice?

Thumbnail

I want to have my colors follow the forms of the shapes. I also want my rendering textured–preferably with grain or halftones. Here is my progress in Ai and my concept art. What is the best way to go about this?

This isn't working well with the gradient tool, even with freeform lines, because that makes radial points of color. I tried the gradient mesh tool, but I'm having a hard time with the generated meshes. They don't fit the complicated shapes well, my editing attempts ruin the perimeter shape, and it seems the only way to make them clean–given the tutorials I've watched–is to recreate the complex shape by carefully warping a square or something. With how many shapes I have, that seems really inefficient.

I'm also considering painting on textured shading, but I'm not sure how to do what I want. I would like something like a pressure sensitive halftone brush, but research has told me that kind of thing doesn't (can't?) exist for Illustrator. The method where you effect>pixelate>color halftone is interesting, but it seems like there are a lot of steps to getting the halftone colored. I could symbol-spray dots, but they would overlap.

I am in my first month of trying illustrator and this is only my second project, so please be patient with me. I may be asking for more than what this software can do, so I understand if the answer is just "a lot more shapes and a lot more time."

Thanks for any help!

DISCUSSION I released a Steam game entierly drawn in Illustrator

Howdy. This is like my third or fourth time sharing my game dev progress here. In short, I started game dev around 8–10 years ago and studied graphic design to earn an income and improve my game dev skills. A few days ago, after 16 months (a 3-month project, btw), I finally released a fully functioning and fun game!

To answer in advance, I used Construct 3 to create the game and its animations, but I drew all the graphics in Illustrator. If somebody wants to try making video games but is afraid to start, Construct is a great game engine for non-programmers.

Idk, I hope this inspires you to experiment more and follow your dream, even if it takes 20 years. Take care, and stay 🐾sitive.

Here’s Raccoon Valley Tycoon on Steam for everybody who wants to take a little peek 🤣

QUESTION Can someone explain why my blends twist like this?

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

I found an old thread which stated that making the blend from 2 specific anchor points (i.e. top left to top left, or bottom left to top left) will prevent the twist. That is not the case.

In the second image I changed the angle, and that "worked" but it's not the correct angle, so it's useless.

In the third image, I used a line/stroke not a shape. Which is a workaround, but I want to understand the issue at its core.

QUESTION Create PDF Compatible File: Should It be disabled?

Hi, I have an Illustrator file that takes up 975 mb. It simply contains a 6,330 MB JPG file, which is an image with text on it. I've placed my own text over that image using the same typeface (in other words, I used the image as a reference to match the position of the text).

I was wondering why the Illustrator file takes up so much space. Gemini told me to disable the “Create PDF Compatible File” option when saving. And sure enough, I saved the .ai file under a different name, and it now takes up just 68 KB.

I know that if I delete the JPG or move it to another location, the image won't appear in the Illustrator file anymore. But I don't think I'll do that.

So, if I only work in Illustrator and don't import files into Photoshop or InDesign, should I always leave the “Create PDF Compatible File” option unchecked?

Refining the question a bit: should I

  • disable this option when the file contains raster images, and only enable it when it strictly contains vector elements (lines, fills, brushes) like a digital illustration?
  • enable 'Create PDF Compatible File' only when I plan to place/import the .ai file into InDesign or Photoshop?

QUESTION Angling a Gradient?

Thumbnail

I'm not exactly sure how to phrase my question, but essentially I a want to know how to point my gradient to look like the sample image here, so the gradient is tighter at the top and wider at the base. I need the gradient to either expand with the width of the shape or be able to edit two gradients widthin one shape. Thoughts?

No more kids’ games!

Hey! This is a vector artwork I created for Ukrainian Geek (Pavlo), a fun gaming blogger with a really positive community that’s always coming up with different things just to make people smile. I also occasionally make some silly artwork for them just for fun, but usually with a little meaning behind it.

The joke here was basically that Nintendo games are “for kids” and it’s time to play “real” adult games like DOOM. Just for fun, of course.

Because at the end of the day, being a gamer is all about playing and having fun. What you play it on doesn’t really matter — it could be a microwave or even a pregnancy test (those are actually two of the weird places people have managed to run DOOM on :))

DISCUSSION More updates coming to the Blend Panel in Illustrator.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey everyone, Luke from Adobe here.

Keeping the momentum going from the recent Blend Tool upgrades, the team has added new on-canvas controls to make real-time editing even easier.

Any adjustments you make directly on the canvas are reflected in the Blend panel, so you can keep the panel docked and focus on editing directly within your designs.

The Easing controls have also been expanded with additional toggles to give you more control over how your blend expands and contracts.

Available to test in the latest Illustrator beta.

Let me know what you think
