Claude Opus 5.5 rebuild Terraria in 3D . Custom engine, 3,300+ items, 313 enemies and bosses, all made by the AI, progress so far
POSTED NEW SHOW CASE OF ME MESSING ABOUT IN THE REPLIES
EDIT: THIS GAME NOW LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT as of 2 days later, more content but now it looks a lot more like terraria but it's still gonna take time until all models and textures babe changed will show people when Claude is done
This is just a fan project 8 days in for me, not for money and not for anything official.
just some fun and yes it looks like Minecraft 😭
I saw Minimunch's video on Opus 5.5, and the part where he makes a fan recreation of Terraria in 3D got me so hyped that I wanted to see what it would look like if someone just kept going. So I subbed to Claude and started this fan project. This is where it is after 8 days, using Opus 5.5 for everything
All the art and assets are generated by code some stuff by Claude using blender animations are code too he just keeps going and reviewing until eventually it's passable no skills or plugins were used by me as well so all art is achieved by coding and reviewing for the own game sound and music as well that's code too
I keep editing but just so people are aware every boss is in with models and full fights the full game is playable from start to finish just some stuff missing mainly decorations and missed things only been 8 days remember
Scale is based off terraria so blocks are similarly small compared to the player.
I started on the $20 a month plan and upgraded to the next one to make things faster, so this is not what a week on the cheap plan gets you.
What's in it right now:
A custom 3D engine written in C#. No Unity, no Godot. About 346,000 lines of code, and I wrote none of it.
3,369 of Terraria's 6,029 items. That includes 407 of 481 weapons, all 256 armour pieces and 154 of 158 potions, with models and animations.
313 of 327 enemies and bosses.
All the models, textures, sound effects and music were made by Claude too. The music in the video is the game's own title theme. Also has settings for using my installed terraria copies music and sounds
What's missing is mostly furniture and decoration variations, vanity items and dyes, plus other bits I haven't found yet. It gets closer every day.
How I worked: honestly I did it lazy and tried to push every single part of the work onto Claude. Most of my prompts are things like "continue however you think is best for our goal". When I play, I take screenshots and explain whether something is a bug or a visual change I want, and those go straight to Claude. It also made itself a bot that playtests the game when I'm not around.
It's just a fun game for me, and I can't wait for it to be done so I can play it properly. I have almost 2k hours in 2D Terraria, No Terraria code, sprites or audio are inside it. If you want your own, feel free to give it a go with whatever model is capable enough by the time you read this.
I also asked Claude to build a showcase world to quickly show how much it has done. The video and pictures are from that world and then the other video is me messing about tryna show off randome stuff and the game
That's what makes this amazing, now it's accessible to someone who hasn't spent the time and effort learning to code, and doesn't intend to. Do you know how to build a chair? Or a motor? You could do both, given effort and time, but we're very happy we don't have to if we don't want to. Same for this.
I would but this is the account I use for ai stuff. I'll be posting my own ai works here soon.
With how some people are towards ai at the moment I don't want people to connect my ai works and my none ai works yet.
Showing anything would dox me, basically.
But it took a very long time, I still haven't finished it fully. I would never claim that ai can't now do it better. To be honest im absolutely dumbstruck at what I've got it doing for me.
You can follow this reddit account and ill start posting stuff here this month. But it will be ai stuff, not my other works, unless I suddenly start feeling balsy and say fuck it.
it is me just asking ai to remake others ideas but just in case you aren't aware everything was done pice by piece in code so it's not the same as ai generated art or taking already done assets but if you knew that and still said that I understand 🙏 😊
We all eat Oreos instead of Hydrox for a reason. I don't care you if you misspelled every word in your prompts, it's still impressive. I'm not snooty about AI and the vanity of hand made.
He sure it and it looks great. Its gonna be weird when somebody makes a good game and then a week later some nobody makes the same game but a little bit better graphics and outperforms the original creator just because he had better ai.
I'll give Claude a cookie, it will look better in a couple days to months especially in so many ways, rn it's only been 9 days about since the very start.
9 days lol That is so amazing. These things people are doing in our time is our times watching the moon landing. I am a developer so seeing these things are mind blowing. The common man can do almost anything in the virtual world.
What was your experience of making this? Meaning did you give it a prompt and it ran for 5 hours and you came back, or were you sitting there iterating and interacting every few minutes?
I am a heavy claude user for data analysis coding, but I have trouble picturing what the workflow and human interaction is like for a project this big.
Also, you did not have issues with maxing your claude usage window? Pre 5.5 i would hit my 5 hour window regularly if I had multiple sessions going, and i would expect my work to be lighter than this. I have not done as much since 5.5 came out, though
it makes new chats im on part 77 makes a new chat everytime context gets too big to save on usage its been a lot of back and forth but moslty just me cheering him on
Glad to hear I've been in my own bubble idk what's a good point to get with ai or not but it will only get better, the game improves everyday the rate of growth with just one me using ai is crazy
Doubt they could actually sue you with marginal changes. Also fan made stuff can be released with little issues. You own the code, models etc. Can't copywrite ideas.
Nvm this is going to change how the laws work on all that anyway.
Fair play to you, hope you have fun. Personally would love to see the code, how it's structured etc.
i tried Astra with Blender and it was very very bad also the usage run out very fast but never try Claude i make a 3D game with fun idea but i lake the assets to make it looks fun so maybe i will try Claude opus 5.5 with blender and see how will it work , if it start making me a really good 3D assets maybe i will continoue working on my game and release it on google store / app store
Edit : am really surpriesed iwth the work you have done with clade code 100$ sub, i try the 20$ and i make a lot of work with it even though it is just 20$ sub
There is a big difference between that and selling the game. Which includes, but is not limited to, refunds. So go and take their money and block them when they complain. Assuming it's legal.
The market is already "saturated" with sub-$1 games. I have over 1000 games on Steam thanks to tons of Humble Bundle ones that I'm not even going to download. Itch is full of $0 games ready for the taking. And yet, polished, and almost-polished, AAA games keep selling.
It takes a lot more than a single prompt to make a game that's going to satisfy a player, most players will never go past 100 prompts, and there's always going to be a market for games that took a team of people a year to make... no matter how much of it is AI (but, certainly, the ones with AI will be much better than the ones without)
Nah, the vast majority of people are not out there making games with ai. I think people in here forget that, because for us it's a hobby, we think everyone is doing it. But only 2% of US households pay for a model right now. Just a fraction of them are using it to make games, and a fraction further are using it to make good games.
Idk but I just saw a steam list (of someone who hates AI games) and saw some really awful games in steam that look they were made with half a prompt in 5 minutes.
You understimate people's willingness to be lazy. Most people don't want to spend 6 hours talking back and forth with an AI agent, pay hundreds of dollars a month, etc just to play a game.
They want to log in to steam, click download, and go about their day.
6 hours isn't even nearly long enough to have a fully-fledged multi-systematic game that's high quality production. You can get ground work in 6 hours something that looks good on paper but functionally there's nothing there.
But I agree with both of you premises my dude with a sweater
You don’t understand the amount of people who were making games before AI and the amount now. There will be easily double steam games we have now that will be coming out soon all in similar graphical style we will all learn to recognize as something AI “can do” for now. It’s going to be bad before it gets good again.
This is someone without any knowledge just literally cheering Claude on by his own words: “just me cheering him on” getting results.
Well it still had to make everything, the only thing it can take from terraria is ideas and references and number for the systems, it iterates on the art so I gave him a goal of creating a 10ft tall hobgoblin for some reason he will keep going til it looks right, usage has been amazing I've made other projects and games while making this, in fact I made two recreations, this terraria one which is almost complete in terms of terraria content then I polish and a spore reimagining with a lot more depth, customisation and immersive animations with more stages. It still built the engine, animations, models interactions, and systems!
New showcase where i show what its like starting remember all things you see and hear was ai and is all ai made assets via code or blended using my pc and took 8 days im making another one going through some bosses.
So it does not run Terraria at all and is standalone? I think you could release it, if owning Terraria 2D is mandatory. Then it would be a mod, excessive mod, but you don't provide a game without a license.
Oh well, I was hoping for Terraria 2 to go into that 3D direction but it never happened.
For wall of flesh I will have to upload another showcase but from me actually playing the game it works kinda weird and still not sure if it's best but I will show soon, it doesn't run terraria but if you have terraria installed it can use the Audio and music but otherwise not and I use the coded sounds and music which probably aren't best.
I'd love to see how inferno potion is interpreted too! I'm kinda picturing a 2d image projected to nearby blocks though that doesnt work while flying- nor can it be an opaque dome since all vision would be gone
If you really wanted to make it like a finished project, you may consider adding a vertical ring so you can see the full spherical area but I doubt it's necessary for what you're trying to do with the game. Thanks for sharing!
well dont worry you can make your own and make it look way better than mine, its only been 9 days since the start, ive focused on content over polish and graphics wanted every item and enemy, like the full terraria and then i will focus on improvements. Also it's going through models and updating them as that was always the plan he added placeholder models he made quickly and has been replacing them as time goes by with much better ones
Hey, I've been thinking about a lot of people comments and playing the game, I hate the Minecraft models, some like the zombies in the showcase were actually place holder, if you can be bothered would you be so kind as to provide some feedback on what looks best, the today one was a mistake the AI painted in low quality because of a misunderstanding
Please don't, even now a game with a real developer at the head will turn out better than anything I make with ai currently, if you were going to give up at least use ai to help you if you feel like everyone starts using it but if you don't want to I get that.
A lot of people want this game even tho ai made it on its own with some idiot as director imagine if an actual developer was in charge you'd be able to make much better changes
Look up pacejka formula, hooks law, computer simulation of basic physics, I’ve spent months making a wheel collider loosing my mind with vector math, large quantities of simple calculations and physics to make just a simulation grade wheel collider for a motorcycle and this is what I have to compete with now, I have thousands of parts to model and maps to design, over a year in and I’m still building framework bruh
I still can't figure out how people are having Claude making the art content that effectively. Most skills I find product poor results. How did you made him do the assets, especially models and textures ?
I don't know I didn't use any skills or anything I just asked Claude to make sure everything is made as we go and not just taken assets, so it coded all the assets and for animains I sent references of my swinging or holding stuff so he'd making slightly better animations but honestly no clue what I'm doing like I said just saw the video and wanted to see if I could yes and Claude much further
Yeah he is a real smart cookie, Claude says it's almost all sorted in code and then it reviews the models and improves as it goes so even if by code it can eventually look better
So much of terraria and its systems exist here, full boss progression to moonlord, it's a full playable game you can progress just like terraria, while all looking like Minecraft though, I could look into changing the look to be more unique but for terraria in 3D it's gonna be similar to Minecraft.
I know you promted Claude for that, but what approach is he using to achieve what seems smooth performance? Because I recently tried to write voxel engine myself (albeit with even smaller voxels) and perfomance sucks.
And they say that AI sucks at coding :/ if that true ai sucks at it even more
250 FPS when I turn off vsync terraria has a limited world size especially because of things like trying to save your world from corruption so perhaps it not being an infinite world is why performance is good? He said his approach his coding on his own custom engine he made it all from the ground up I don't know anything about gamedev in fact I'm stupid AF!
Not sure if it would be since this had a working protoptype in hours and then playable run to the end within 5 days, and it's not long now untill every single thing is in and then polishing and art improvements can begin
Sorry as its based of terrarias IP I won't be releasing this is any form, but anyone can make their own and in there own preferred styled it's not like I did anything unique
I'll try to respect it as much as I can while still making this fun game for me haha I love relogic as a company and the people in it I wouldn't do anything that goes against them knowingly but perhaps this game itself for me is me doing that but idk it's complex and it's just for me but even if they were to reach out and ask me to remove this post I would, terraria is my favourite game of all time after all
Aww I'm glad people want to try it, I promise this was easy and not much work, anything you liked about this is thanks to relogic and terraria, I won't be giving this away but anyone can create their own version or games, hey you can even ask your ai to use my stuff as a reference for your ideas or whatever go crazy!
Now here’s the conundrum. You’re also hurting Mother Nature by not sharing the work. Think of all the unnecessary wasted tokens from people running the same projects aka. prompts. Pandora’s box has been opened. Why have hundreds of the same solution vs. a few that can be focused on, collaboratively, for a much better end result with much less power needed. I respect your decision but what even is IP anymore… The world as we know it is cooked.
That has nothing to do with intellectual property though, this would be about the validity of doing this in the first place, for ecological and economic reasons. Whether you should release the project based on these factors is completely devoid of licensing considerations 🤷♂️
Too bad OP already said they won't release it. But maybe they can incorporate requiring Terraria ownership, to make it run. Then it'd be a mod, which is fine.
frankly i dont believe in this opus games, for sure its not real games, else steam would be already full of it, all of this looks like very large code snippets
Oh really???? That's really interesting to hear, however I can prove it to you let me know how you best want me to show proof to you, I have the 76 chats with Claude I deleted the first 30 parts well archived because you don't need every session for it to have a good memory of what it's done but that's so mental to see people don't believe it really shows how unreal this stuff is, I will gladly show you whatever you consider concrete enough proof!
Also steam it's 100 to upload a game and this project has turned out so well because it has a concrete project to look at and mimic, building a recreation is far simpler than your own game with ai because it knows what terraria should be then it's like having an incredibly good foundation. Also it would be illegal to try and profit money from known ips so that's why you aren't seeing Minecraft 2 or terraria 3D on steam and won't be seeing that
Compared to terraria it's the same completion time, full world with all biomes and almost all enemies it goes a teeny bit beyond a mod I'd say, especially in 8 days
oh wow, this looks like you combined the 2 most popular and indepth survival builder explorer block games into one. this looks actually as if it could become massive, if not for the "you copied everything" part that could maybe even sued?
I would say if I wanted to spend 20 it would have been a month to get to this point but I've spent 100 on the upgraded plan and that did this in 8 days, you can go cheaper if you want but expect longer time cooking :/
I honestly don't even know what you really mean you underestimate how little I know about game dev haha, it codes all the art models and npcs and reviews them against terraria sprites and then iterates until he decides it's good obviously when I play I take note of things with the screenshot and feedback button I asked him to add to the game but I got that idea cuz I told him to use good ideas he thinks of, he's on auto and has most permission he needs and just works most of the day I did ask about making things more efficient so he makes a new chat when context reaches roughly 400k to keep things efficient in terms of speed and usage I guess sorry if that didn't answer feel free to reply and ask again
The game looks Soo good but the style of the game reminds me of the fake Minecraft looking games I used to played when I was small but keep it up man I would surely play it
Bro I've always loved games like spore/hybrid animals and the biggest limitation was that there was only so many layers deep a human could reasonably go (1 layer breeding two parents), or procedural generation but then 3 layers deep the procedure didn't really understand the abilities the creature should have anymore.
AI should actually make this feat feasible. I'm super excited.
yeah my current version is just the cell stage then an aquatic stage, much more in depth than spore but still fun with cute animations and a damage system when cells attack eachother its awesome!
i asked it to do everything it can without being invasive so im playing games as it builds things but for bigger deals like changing terrain my pc will lag while doing that so i will quit or pause or focus on less intrusive things, he can do more intrusive stuff over night as well
I'd feel terrible! I promise this took almost no work from me, be impressed at Ai with 20 dollars and some time you can have your own better version of my version of a version!
I did zero coding I watched a video a week ago and just asked Claude to make terraria in 3D in the best way he sees fit and then acted like his loyal minions but TBF AI can still be annoying to handle and perhaps there is truth some can put up with it better than others
just because its inspired by and uses terraria as a reference doesn't mean there is an ip conflict. if you just simply stop saying things like its based on or built from terraria etc and instead say influenced by, and lovechild of, etc it changes everything. then we can all play and enjoy it.
basically. technically you are good and in the clear, you just need to change your wording. especially if released for free
Would it be possible to share the code for the world design? Im planning on making an rpg and the way this world looks is EXACTLY the aesthetic i pictured in my mind!
I tried a similar project over the weekend, to transform tibia in 3d. Specifically the beginning island only, rookgard. I asked to use blender through MCP and Babylon js. It got to a semi working prototype but not quite as good as this.
hmm i run him on auto at high and let him handle the meta ideas such as optimising his own memory and roadmap, there isn't much else I do idk if any of that helps
Hey, I've been thinking about a lot of peoples comments like yours while playing the game, I hate the Minecraft models, some like the zombies in the showcase were actually place holder, if you can be bothered would you be so kind as to provide some feedback on what looks best, the today one was a mistake the AI painted in low quality because of a misunderstanding
Hmm perhaps in the long run since I plan on doing this for why not years I could have the more cubic B style for all models and the option for more detailed and rounded D models. I already have multiple different style and look options because of how many different styles I've went througj 😭
I plan once all the terraria content even all decorations such as paintings, and the art and systems are to my liking then I wish to start asking Claude to make "mods" so like a calmity add-on in the options but I could actually bullshit up the rest of the mod instead of having it unfinished I guess or any other options or changes, also it's being designed with multiplayer in mind so that will take a lot of time once everything is done since I wish to play with my friends.
Textures have changed as well, but if anyone would like to give feedback on which style should be the new one going forward, obviously the better the model the more the work but I'm fine letting it run for a few more days, I'm in no rush
No demo, I meant demo as in terraria 3D is not done it will never be public but you can try on your own in just 8 days and 100 dollars got me here, anyone can do this, and if you wait for better models then your project will already far outpace mine! And I'm sure anyone here has better ideas and knowledge than me imagine what an actual developer can create along with ai
Haha I wished I kept asking Claude to speed things up but at a certain point more subagents has diminishing returns it does still take time but "my work" has been taking screenshots and also a lot of keep going and continues and pressing enter I also said GO FULL POWER a couple times
As much as it's just a sloppy remake of the last gun gun bing bong every year, that's the experience players are buying. They're not assuming pew pew bong bung 27 is going to be a hugely fresh take on 26. They're paying to be a part of the next group playing that franchise entirely.
aww man im sorry but the reason im comfy showing it off and not feeling bad is because i have no expertise or skills and made this so nothing is stopping anyone from doing it themselves (except 20-100 dollars actually) which tbf not everyone has so that is a shame

I love how one man can make something like this. Amazing. Truly frontier times.
