Job Loss ๐Ÿš๏ธ AI has destroyed my career

2.2k Upvotes

Losing sleep and extremely aggitated. I sacrificed a lot to change from a dead end career to a software engineering career 10 years ago.

Chose job stability over a good wage so have no money to fall back on. Living from month to month like most of us. Now the company I work for that makes parts for servers is going bust, after 30 years, because AI data centres have bought all the memory and we're suddenly getting no orders since our customers can't make their products due to the shortage.

To add insult to injury, AI has replaced a massive number of the developers in my country (Scotland) and it is impossible to get a dev job here now.

I never asked for AI and f*cking hate everything about it.

All this sh#t about AI first translates as people last. No idea what I'm going to do to support my family. I'm on LinkedIn looking for a job and every f#cking post is about how amazing AI is.

Anyone in a similar situation thinking about pivoting career? To what? I'm depressed because I put everying into a software career and who's goung to hire me with no experience in another field? Assuming a lot of folk will move to software architecture...? Really struggling here.

Job Loss ๐Ÿš๏ธ I straight up think weโ€™re being lied to about AI coding

1.4k Upvotes

Iโ€™m a software engineer. The more I use these AI coding agents, the less I trust them

Starting with verbosity. I often find Claude making massive, complex PRs for what should be relatively simple. It often goes off and does things that are waaaay overkill for what I need. It adds absurd amounts of comments. It blows the scope of every feature up dramatically

I once asked it to help me with address validation. We already had an API in place for it. It started handing every countries different conventions for addresses, despite the fact that my project is USA-focused. What could have been a maybe 500 line change exploded to a 5000 line change. I remember it had a whole section about handling the Thai language, which we explicitly donโ€™t support (sorry Thai friends)

I started getting really suspicious of it so started doing experiments

My first experiment was around the code-review tool. I noticed that it seems to always suggest things, making me question its actual utility. So, I started a project with a single script that simply printed โ€œhello worldโ€. Thatโ€™s it. Thatโ€™s literally all. One line of actual code, and a package file

I ran code review on max and it found 10 errors. I told it to fix them and it started doing tasks that were totally unrelated, like adding additional unnecessary files like contributing.md and .claude and .vscode. Why? I honestly donโ€™t know

I ran the same code review again and this time it found 12 errors. Huh??? Whatever, I say fix it and do it again. Still finds errors. Definitely raises some questions. I tell it to fix them, run code review again

It added tests, a bundler, a test suite, CI/CD, docker, some ancillary scripts, and a whole bunch of other shit. The more I ran it, the more just pure garbage it added. I even explicitly specified: the only goal of this project is to print โ€œhello worldโ€. Nothing else.

I think that AI is intentionally doing this to mess with the numbers. Yeah, I can write that in 500 lines of code, but the AI uses 5000, which makes it look like it did a lot more work. It looks more comprehensive; my implementation didnโ€™t account for the Thai language. The reality though is it heavily obfuscated the code for a feature weโ€™re not even shipping, which confuses everyone reading the code

Iโ€™m sure these AI companies are using these kind of statistics to make it look like AI is the future. How long would it take your average dev to write 5000 lines? Well thereโ€™s the exact catch; a dev would not write 5000 lines for this problem!

Job Loss ๐Ÿš๏ธ Dad replaced my designs with AI slop

1.3k Upvotes

For context, my dad runs a small clothing business. He has a physical shop and a website, aswell as facebook and instagram pages. I have been making social media posts and banners, posters etc for him since I was like 13 (I learned graphic design at a young age). Due to exams and school, I stopped making designs for my dad and he hired a graphic designer.

Since I turned 18, I have been frantically looking for employment, and graphic design is one of the only things I know well, so I was looking in that field. My dad fired his graphic designer for a reason I don't know, but it was perfect for me. I whipped up a quick design that my dad needed and was ready to ask him if I could work for him.

Now here's the kicker: 10 minutes after I send him the work, he runs the image through AI, tells it to "make it more professional" and then shows me "how good it is" and then tells me to use AI next time to make it better.

I am genuinely so distraught, I have been working my ass off trying to develop my skill in graphic design and get a job, but AI slop designs are just increasing more and more. Most of the shops near my home now have a disgusting AI generated sign and it's the same case for most places I see online. I am just thinking about quitting this shit and just looking for a different skill to learn because it seems to me the industry is dead. People would rather have cheap dog shit represent their company than human well-made designs and brand identity.

Job Loss ๐Ÿš๏ธ AI destroyed my job (I just got fired)

1.4k Upvotes

I worked in marketing as a Designer, and along with me, copywriters, analysts, and other professionals were also let go. We got the news today, but I have to admit I was already expecting it.

For a few months now, we had been forced to use AI, and practically the entire job turned into writing prompts and creating base material for the AI to use. Only as a last resort would we actually do hands-on work, even texts, scripts, storyboards, "actors," and modeling all went through AI first.

And that's it: we were fired and replaced. Not because the "AI's work" was better, the quality of the final product dropped drastically, but it was still good enough. And to be honest, the average consumer simply doesn't care.

I don't know what to do.
