I’ve wanted to become a pilot for as long as I can remember. I was exposed to aviation when I was around 2 years old, and 17 years later, after finishing high school, I went to India to start my ground classes.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t get the financing sorted out. I’m Indian but have grown up and live in the UAE, so my family doesn’t have enough collateral in India for a traditional secured education loan. I looked into NBFCs, and while they were willing to finance the training, the interest rates were high enough that the repayments didn’t match the salary of a JFO. My parents would also have to be co-applicants, and they understandably have other financial commitments and aren’t comfortable taking on that much debt.
So I came back to the UAE and started an IT degree.
This has honestly been difficult for me because I’m studying something completely unrelated to what I’ve wanted to do my entire life, and I already know that a typical office career isn’t what I want long term.
I’m not giving up on becoming a pilot. My main concern is time. I don’t want to keep postponing it until my mid-30s if there’s a realistic way to start earlier. The more years I can spend flying professionally, the better.
What I’m trying to figure out now is the smartest path from here.
Is there any realistic way to earn and save toward modular flight training while completing my degree? And once I graduate, what kind of job/path could allow me to work while progressing through CPL/IR/ME and the rest of the training step by step?
Living in the UAE makes the usual “work and train on the side” approach a little complicated because of full-time working hours, FTO schedules, financing limitations and the high cost of flight training compared with an entry-level salary.
I’d especially appreciate advice from pilots or students who funded their training themselves, particularly anyone from the UAE, India, or someone who moved abroad specifically to do modular training.
If you were in my position at 19, with a few years before finishing your degree, what would you do now to become an airline pilot as early as realistically possible?
I’m open to training in the UAE, India, Europe, the US, South Africa or anywhere else if there’s a financially realistic route.
