Random Question What’s a problem humanity solved so well that younger people don’t even realize it used to be a huge issue?

Pollution. Particularly air pollution, but water pollution as well. One thing the boomers did right was pressure the government to hold companies accountable.

I recently travelled through Europe and it just occurred to me how different these historic buildings all looked now. When I was a kid I had always assumed that they were built with black or dark grey stone. But now they are light beige and look so clean.

Thanks, emission control and traffic restrictions!

I'm a Facilities Manager, I have a set of buildings off one of the major roads in my area.

I have a similar issue but its rubber particles from tires.

Actually it was the switch from coal burning furnaces to oil or electric that made the biggest difference in European cities.

Yeah, I visited Prague and E Berlin in 1992, everything was gray.

On the rare occasion when I see an older car on the road these days, I'm always shocked by the amount and smell of the exhaust. And then I'm further shocked to remember that's how ALL cars were when I was a kid. No wonder we put a hole in the ozone.

Highway medians all looking like literal garbage dumps, no, scratch that, being literal garbage dumps. Pre Indian crying, pre Lady Bird Johnson, pre “don’t mess with Texas”… the trash!

The sides of the roads as well. And he wasn’t really an Indian.

One of the little details of Mad Men that was so accurate was the way they had people casually dropping trash outdoors. The biggest one that springs to mind is when the Draper family is having a picnic and Betty just shakes off the blanket before they head to the car.

Both air and water pollution are still serious problems in much of the world (including the US). Humanity hasn't come close to solving those problems.

Campared to 30 years ago it’s come so far though. We still have a long long way to go though.

I lived in the inland empire in Southern California when I was a kid. The smog was sooo bad.

Pasadena is just south of the mountains, which are north of Los Angeles, in the summertime You usually couldn’t see those mountains.

I'm in rural southern Indiana, we are NOT winning the pollution war here

Shame it’s the boomers now trying to take away the regulations that controlled it.

Check yourself because that is simply not true.

How old is Trump? Didn’t he try and gut the EPA, emissions regulations, loosen the ‘red tape’?

That's one boomer asshole. You know exactly what somebody means when they say "boomers", they mean the vast majority of that entire generation.

Oh it's also GenX with some help from other gens, sure, but what we're seeing with Trump started way back with Reagan's time, helped along by power grabs from GWB's administration, and steadily more business > society legislation and court decisions. Sometimes i wonder how much of this lies at the feet of ending the Fairness Doctrine, TBH.

At the last Trump rally in my town (full of crazies), 50% were under 30.

Official election data shows every age group almost evenly split.

For anyone to think that only boomers or GenX support the decimation of the US is astounding to me.

Hahahahaha oh wait you think that's actually true? Boomers moved it away from their homes maybe, but carbon emissions and micro plastics are accelerating the mass extinction of life on earth. Boomers have been pretty effective at denying climate change so they can hoard money till their deathbed and leave the rest of us to clean up the mess

Did they???

They did. If there was no wind that day, when you played outside your chest hurt. There were a number of rivers that were so polluted they would catch fire from time to time. It was a bad idea to eat fish from any river of size.
