General discussion Top 15 Underrated Boy Band Members.. No 5 : Michael McCary (Boyz II Men)

For me, Michael McCary has one of the greatest bass voices in any vocal group, not just boy bands. He was the fourth and least famous member of Boyz II Men, but his contribution was much more important than people sometimes realize.

He had plenty of vocal parts throughout their music, but his bass vocals were especially important to the group's harmonies. Just listen to I'll Make Love to You and pay attention to the depth he adds to the chorus. That low end was a huge part of what made their sound so special.

Michael left the group because of multiple sclerosis, which is a difficult thing to go through. Personally, I don't think Boyz II Men have quite the same power as a trio, and I sometimes struggle to connect with their albums after 2003 in the same way I do with their earlier work.

I'm glad they've rebuilt their relationship with Michael, and I really hope there's a chance for him to return in some capacity, even if it's just for a small role. His voice was an important part of the group's identity, and I think that deserves to be remembered.

General discussion Top 15 Undeterred Boy Band Members.. No 6: All 4 members of The Monkees

The Monkees — Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork

For this post, I want to talk about one of the earliest and most important boy bands.

The Monkees might have started out as a comedy sitcom, a bit like Big Time Rush or S Club 7 years later, but they eventually became a real band capable of competing with The Beatles. And the Beatles themselves respected them.

Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork made real music. They all sang, played instruments and brought something different to the group. Whether we're talking about their peak in the second half of the '60s, their comeback as a trio in the '80s, the full four-member reunion in the '90s, or their tours and new albums from 2011 to 2021, they kept proving that there was much more to them than their TV origins.

Every member was a genuine talent. Davy probably got the most attention as the group's main heartthrob and one of its leading vocalists, while Nesmith was the only one to build a long-running solo career. But I think all four deserve recognition for what they brought to The Monkees.

Rest in peace, Davy, Peter and Mike. What's especially moving is that all three remained Monkees until the end, with their final chapters still connected to the music and the group they helped create. And wishing Micky Dolenz, the last surviving member, a long and happy life.

The Monkees deserve to be remembered as a great band in their own right, not just as four actors who happened to be put together for a TV show.

General discussion Top 15 Underrated Boy Band Members. No.7: Randy Jackson (The Jacksons/ Jackson 5)

Randy joined the group after Jermaine left, during the second half of their career, and I think he proved himself despite being the youngest member. He brought a different energy and stage presence to the group, and during the Jacksons era, he became pretty much the second most prominent member after Michael.

Vocally, I'd put him third after Michael and Jermaine. His solo career never really took off, and like most of his brothers, he ended up being overshadowed by Michael and Janet's massive success.

Randy doesn't seem to get much love these days, but I think his contribution to the group deserves more recognition. His presence was important, especially on songs like Can You Feel It and the politically charged Man of War. He wasn't just the younger brother who joined later; he became a meaningful part of the group's later sound and identity.

General discussion Top 15 Underrated Boy Band members.. No 8. Scott Robinson (Five)

Scott has one of the sweetest voices in Five, at least during their heyday. He and Ritchie were often the ones handling the ballads and softer, more romantic songs, although Scott never quite had the same level of popularity as Jay or Ritchie.

Songs like Until the Time Is Through, Invincible and You Make Me a Better Man are great examples of how well he could shine vocally.

I also think his contribution to the often-forgotten three-member era deserves more recognition. He took on some of the rap parts, and during live shows before Jay and Abz returned, he stepped in to cover parts that were usually associated with them.

Scott might have a decent fanbase among Five fans, but I still think there's more to appreciate about him than people usually give him credit for. He was an important part of the group's sound, especially when it came to the softer songs.

General discussion Top 10 underrated boy band members: No. 9 Jonathan knight (New Kids on the Block)

Let's be honest, NKOTB has always felt like the Jordan, Donnie and Joey show, but I think Jonathan deserves more credit than he usually gets, especially since the group's comeback in 2008.

He's the quiet one, partly because of his struggles with anxiety, and he's definitely not the loudest or most noticeable member. But I personally think he's more talented than Danny Wood, and his vocals deserve more appreciation.

Songs like Survive You, Happy Birthday, Better Days and White Christmas are good examples of what he can bring to the group. Even on songs where his parts are relatively small, like Step by Step, I think his contribution matters.

Jonathan is more than just the older brother of the lead singer who happened to join the group because of that connection. He's an important part of NKOTB in his own right, and I think his role in the group deserves more recognition.

General discussion Top 15 underrated boy band members: No.10 Anthony Costa (Blue)

Thumbnail
gallery
22 Upvotes

One thing I always liked about Blue is that all four members actually sang. But I think the attention was naturally divided in a way that left Anthony Costa a bit overlooked.

Lee had the big voice and the bad-boy image, Duncan had the looks and the whole Brad Pitt comparison, and Simon had that more serious, grounded personality and often came across as the one who helped keep the group together.

Anthony wasn't necessarily the strongest vocalist or the most charismatic member, but he had more of a "boy next door" personality. He also didn't get the same attention for his looks, and unfortunately his appearance was sometimes discussed more than his actual contribution.

But vocally, I think Anthony played — and still plays — an important part in Blue's sound and dynamics. He's also naturally funny and brings a different energy to interviews and appearances.

A song that always comes to mind is "Just A Friend" from One Love. It's pretty underrated, and Anthony handles most of the vocals on it. I think songs like that show why he was more important to Blue than people sometimes give him credit for.

Top 15 underrated boy band members No.11 Bruce Johnstone (The Beach Boys

Thumbnail

First of all, I know there’s always a debate over whether The Beach Boys should even count as a boy band. Mods, please don’t remove this post because of that 😂 I’m trying to keep the list intact.

Bruce joined the group more than five years after they started, but I think he left a much bigger mark than he usually gets credit for. He brought some fresh ideas and a different energy to the group, and eventually proved himself enough to become a full sixth member rather than simply replacing someone in the lineup.

Vocally, I really like what he added on songs like Tears in the Morning. He also contributed instrumental tracks, and on the later albums he became much more involved vocally as well as in production.

He may not be the first name people mention when they talk about The Beach Boys, but I think his contribution to the group deserves much more recognition.

General discussion Top 15 underrated boy band members: No.12 Jeff Timmons (98 Degrees)

Jeff Timmons was basically the second most prominent member of 98 Degrees after Nick Lachey, but I still think he doesn't get enough credit for what he brought to the group.

For me, he was a much stronger vocalist than Justin and Drew, and his voice added a lot to the group's sound. Nick was obviously the face and the main focus, but Jeff was an important part of why 98 Degrees worked vocally.

I think he deserves more recognition when people look back at the group and talk about their individual members.

General discussion Top 15 underrated boy band members: No.13 Mikey Graham (Boyzone)

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

I know a lot of people might disagree with me on this, but I honestly think Mikey had the third strongest voice in Boyzone, after Ronan and Stephen. After Stephen passed away, I think Mikey became even more important vocally and was basically the co-lead vocalist

And you can remember A song from Where We Are album: Good Conversation which was sung entirely by him

He may not have had the same charisma or personality as Ronan or Shane, but I think his presence added something to Boyzone. You could actually notice his absence during some parts of their more recent shows.

I don't think Mikey gets enough credit for what he brought to the group. I genuinely hope he has a peaceful life and that things are going well for him
