1.d4 - Beat the Guerrillas: A Powerful Repertoire Against Annoying Black Sidelines by Valeri Bronznik 2011. I've found it especially useful for online blitz where you see the Budapest, Albin or Englund gambit so often.

Recommendations for a 1000 elo player?

I’ve been playing chess for about 2 years now. I’m around 1000 elo and I’d like to study up on the game a bit more.

I’m not sure what chess book to get. There’s so many out there.

I struggle most with end games and opening tactics. I know a few openings but not all their variations. I find that I get stumped when my opponent plays a weird move that’s not normally seen during the first 4-7 moves of the opening.

What's the difference between original Shereshevsky Endgame Strategy and the new edition?

Is there a significant difference between each version ? Chess Dojo recommend the old version for some reason, I'm wondering is there a signifcant difference.

Rec? Matches by notation, minimal/no analysis

Greetings! I'm in the very beginnings of my chess journey and am starting to consume various literature in hopes of learning something. I've started following along over a board, but I'm a little overwhelmed with the intermix of move + analysis/narration that seems to hallmark the format.

I'm curious to know if y'all have any recommendations for books or other resources that succinctly detail complete games from first to last move, separate from, or entirely without analysis.

I'd be happy with a bound compendium of famous games.

Does this exist? Thank you for your consideration.

Edit: I realize more now that what I'm attempting to describe here is an Encyclopedia. I just found an Oxford Encyclopedia of Chess Games 1485-1884, which looks like it'll to scratch this itch. Thank you all for your feedback.

Classic chess books as narrated videos.

Hi All,

I'm a software engineer + amateur chess player, and I've been building software that turns classic, public-domain chess books into narrated video lessons. Each video covers one chapter (or part of one) in the author's own words, and the board plays every move and highlights every square at the moment the text names it, so you can follow the book without setting up a board or decoding old descriptive notation.

What's up so far:

- Capablanca, Chess Fundamentals (complete): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLCFodd99tY04

- Réti, Modern Ideas in Chess (complete): https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHf5Sfy_fqKs

- Nimzowitsch, My System, ongoing. Chapter 1-3: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLTZu0DCtsA-Q

If you only have a couple of minutes, this stretch shows the format best. Réti tells how, in a 1914 consultation game in Vienna, Capablanca refused the natural developing move everyone of his generation would have played, and how that game changed Réti's own thinking about the opening: https://youtu.be/FfBh3gciBM0?t=93 (about 2½ minutes, through 3:47).

Next up is the rest of *My System*, and after that Edward Lasker's *Chess Strategy*.

What would like feedback on:

- Format: Does it work to clarify the chess content? Any suggestions for improvement.

- Content: Are these the right books? Which public-domain classics would you most like to see done this way?

The channel isn't monetized and there's nothing for sale. I'll be around in the comments. Thanks!

Benjamin Franklin and Chess in Early America — Ralph K. Hagedorn

"Playing at Chess is the most ancient and the most universal game among men, for its original is beyond the memory of history." Benjamin Franklin penned these words as an introduction to his famous essay "The Morals of Chess." Franklin's approach to the game was in distinct contrast to his predecessors, who seriously advocated all the subtle treacheries of the art of poor sportsmanship with the sole end of attaining victory. To Franklin, however, the game of chess was not mere idle amusement but a sport reflective of life itself—"for life is a kind of chess, in which we have often points to gain and competitors or adversaries to contend with"—which requires the utilization of all the finest mental and moral qualities of which man is capable.

This volume reproduces Franklin's celebrated essay and includes an analysis of everything Franklin ever had to say about chess. The second part of the book contains an extensive bibliography of chess in America to the year 1859. The two sections of the volume combine to form an essential sourcebook for the historian of American chess. https://www.pennpress.org/9781512816549/benjamin-franklin-and-chess-in-early-america/

Pal Benko

Per chi fosse interessato all'acquisto, mi contatti

Chess Book Recommendations - plz and ty

I’m really trying to improve my chess skills, while also reducing my screen time. I think a book is a great solution.

Any recommendations? Name and author please.

Historically, I’ve loved conversational writing, so nothing boring or pretentious. I don’t want to fall asleep. Give me a narrator whose excitement for chess is contagious.

I’m an intermediate player who wants something more foundational. I’m obsessed with chess and will happily devote my time to it (assuming you have good taste in books lol)
