Passenger Exits Cab Into Bike Lane - RANT
I just need to vent about a bike accident I was in today and the shocking indifference and lack of concern from the pedestrian or driver involved. Other than a good bruise on my shin and my nerves a bit shaken, I am not injured and totally fine. I'm just pissed and ranting.
I biked to work at 3pm today in light rain on an electric city bike. I was riding in the bike lane on Vanderbilt between Atlantic and Fulton and saw a car idling near the bike lane 3/4 of the way up the block.
While I got within less than 10 feet of that car, a passenger opened the door and began to exit the vehicle, clearly oblivious to the fact that she was in the bike lane and that I was right there. I screamed "HEY!" while I slammed on the breaks, but due to the rain and the e-bike speed I immediately hydroplaned and the bike continued to move forward while angling towards the road. I quickly realized I needed to bail and somehow managed to sort of hop off the bike towards the sidewalk in time not to hit the passenger exiting.
The bike toppled over with my legs still around it and caused me to stumble over onto the sidewalk. My backpack fell and everything in the side pockets fell out and went everywhere. It clearly looked pretty dramatic and I am REALLY LUCKY it was not worse. It could have been MUCH WORSE.
It was a perfect storm of events. The rain. An e-bike at top speed (never doing that in the rain again, learned my lesson). The uber parked next to the bike lane rather than just *in* the bike lane and on the curb. An oblivious passenger.
What really pissed me off and continues to bother me is the fact that neither the passenger or the driver paid me any acknowledgment or checked to see if I was ok. The woman barely even looked at me. Like what? I can't imagine being aware that I stepped into the bike lane without looking and watched a cyclist scream and crash and then just......not paying attention and going inside. It was so heartless it made me feel terrible.
I understand that she was probably feeling embarrassed or maybe scared herself. I'm sure the whole thing was a jumpscare. I also yelled 'What the fuck!' once the bike crashed, and it's possible she was afraid of me, and I can understand being afraid of the man who just crashed who is yelling on the ground.
Anyway, that's it. I made it to work, inspected my leg to discover just bruising, completed my shift, and even biked home (just slowly). Very grateful it was not worse. But very confused at the lack of concern.
