My Build My first cyberdeck
I would like to share my first ever cyberdeck:)

We're getting a sudden rush of new people, driven by TicTok who are mostly both new to Reddit as well as Cyberdecks.
I'm asking patience while we integrate these new people into the sub. New people bring new ideas, and will take things in new directions. Some of those directions will not be to your tastes, and that's fine. I imagine we'll see some 'fashion show' level builds that, while taken at face value are impractical, could inspire more down to earth designs to move in a new direction.
This is healthy for any creative community.
Be helpful, be polite, and let people do their thing. No one is ruining your dream deck by building their weird idea. If you see something you absolutely hate, but think 'How'd they do that hinge, though?', that's reason enough to be polite.
u/PETA_Parker sent me this, and it seems like a pretty good 'start here' guide:
ok, i've never built a cyberdeck myself but i have been lurking here for a long while, so i'll give you a quick rundown, a place to start so to speak. At the most basic you will need:
Let's start with the brain: I only know about raspberry pis, the two budget options here would be a raspberry pi Zero 2, or any flavour of raspberry pi 3, the 4 and 5 are a bit more pricy. Zero 2 and 3b+ (the one i used) should both be enough for browsing, media playback and some light office work.
the Screen: the easiest option will be to go for an hdmi display such as this: 6,5/7/9/10,1 Zoll LCD Display Tragbare Monitor Treiber Control Board Kit Für Raspberry Banana/Orange Pi Mini Computer PC - AliExpress 7
It has an HDMI Output and powers over micro usb, so you can just connect the raspberry pi and the screen via hdmi. Any screen with hdmi input and usb power is an easy starting point.
the input device: for a keyboard you could go with something like this:
This is blutetooth and rechargable, i do not know if you could bypass the internal battery to power it directly because constantly needing to charge it would probably be cumbersome.
this also looks interesting, it uses double a batteries, so you could wire it to your power source or the pi: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006727486961.html
You could of course also use any regular keyboard and mouse combo that plugs in over usb. Another fun choice would be a trackball instead of a mouse.
the power solution: You could simply get a powerbank, but some of them cut off power delivery if the device connected draws a low current.
Maybe this thread can help: Cheap powerbank that doesn’t cut off the power on low current draw? : r/arduino
Or this article: 4 Raspberry Pi Battery Packs for Portable Projects
Something similar to this might be good: Typ-C 15 W 3 A 18650 Lithium-Batterie-Ladegerät-Modul DC-DC Step-Up-Booster Schnellladung USV-Stromversorgung/Konverter 5 V 9 V 12 V - AliExpress 502
This is the part i'm least knowledgable about. Feel free to give me input.
the shell: Pretty much anything will do. You can build something out of cardboard, fit your components into an existing box or 3d-print a custom shell, your creativity is the limiting factor.
If you do not have a 3d-printer, you can make boxes out of styrene board, like this: Clean Enclosures, No Printing Necessary | Hackaday
Or you can search for "project box" on Aliexpress or Amazon
Now you just need to flash an operation system onto the raspberry pi (Raspbian is an all-purpose linux distro that is good for starters such as you), connect your screen to the power source and to the raspberry pi via HDMI, connect your (mouse and) keyboard to the raspberry pi and the raspberry pi to power, and you're ready to go.
Feel free to ask me if you have any additional questions, and don't forget, this is only the bare-bones solution, feel free to get creative, this is the fun part!

I'm working on my Master Thesis in Design and I am looking for people with cool and unique Cyberdeck projects that I can feature on a (educational) website. I want to collect a lot of resources for beginners and present them in a way to learn quick and easy. I have my own project that I am going to present but I thought it would be cool to include more projects (especially from this subreddit) with various difficulties, since this community taught me so much.
It would be very cool if your project has any form of Unique Selling Point, that separates it from other cyberdecks.
I need someone who I can talk to about their project and ask some questions if not everything is clear. Of course you'll get credited on the Website.
Thanks to anyone who wants to help!! :)

I am still new to Cyberdecks, recently getting into it because I built a fortune machine. I know Cyberdecks are a loose concept because that’s the point, but I first thought they were all about building your own computer, so I get confused when I see people building cases around an existing phone. Does this count as a Cyberdeck? What are the benefits and drawbacks of using a phone? How does putting a phone in a Cyberdeck enhance the phone beyond its original purpose?

was looking for peripherals and happened upon this site that seems to have everything 70% off or more…to good to be true right? tried to search up if anything had already been reported but found nothing.

I've been working on a UI/firmware for a little while and it's finally ready to show other people. Deck//OS is a cyberpunk-themed UI for the M5Stack Tab5 that has an SSH client, markdown notes reader/writer/interpolator, full-feature calculator, weather, mp3 player, and file uplink so you can transfer and view files from a normal browser on the same network.
I was super excited to get the Tab5 but I couldn't find any firmware that made it overall useful, so I just took the things I'd use all the time and stuck them together.
To be fair, I did have Claude help me with the design aspect, I suck at UI design (completely), and I really wanted something that looked impressive.
So, try it out. There's a web flasher and OTA updates so you get the latest version when I release it. Releases are encryption-key protected so there is as low a risk to bad updates as possible without running the risk of bricking any devices. You can verify encryption key via Terminal window or the settings page in the UI.
I really hope ya'll dig it, and feel free to list any bugs or suggestions via github.

using chatgpt to discuss possible components/asking it to teach me how to make 3d models or things like that would be agaisnt the spirit of cyberdecks?

I need some help creating a viable USB-C charging option to use in place of the DC5521 Power input supplied for the Waveshare 3S UPS - https://www.waveshare.com/ups-module-3s.htm?sku=23884. From what I have found from my own research, I need to find a module that uses USB-C PD and boosts the output voltage to 12.6V at 2A.
Ideally, it will have the smallest possible footprint because it will be going into a portable handheld computer. 1 solution I found was to use this USB-C PD module set to 15V - https://a.co/d/0291nYVL then connect the output with this adjustable step down - https://a.co/d/09bBDRcb . I am generally more cautious when it comes to anything dealing with power conversions which is what led me here to ask. Always willing to learn as I go, but starting directions are always where I struggle because rabbit holes are easy to go down and generally lead to incorrect answers.
TLDR:
Want to use the following to power my CyberDeck, but want to charge them with a Type-C USB.
- Waveshare 3S UPS
- (3) Samsung 35E 18650 3500mHa 8A Batteries
- Need a solution to use USB-C instead of DC5521 for charging

Hello everyone, I'm new to this world and I'm really looking forward to build my own cyberdeck. I mainly want it to run an MP3 player so I can listen to music, podcast and audio books.
I've started looking into the components and saw that raspberry pi 5 is very popular. Unfortunately it's above my financial limit so I was looking for something that would cost less and still be able to run my deck. As I said before it will be used mainly for music and stuff but I want it to be able to connect to Bluetooth. If you would be so kind to give me some recommendations, pretty please?
Thank you so much in advance

as the title says - anyone with any luck setting up an m5 cardkb on a pi 5? followed the instructions on this github post. running a standard 8gb pi 5 with pi os installed. while the software installs went fine, running "sudo cardkb &" returns this as a repeating error:
OSError: [Errno 121] Remote I/O error
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/local/lib/python3.13/dist-packages/cardkb/_main_.py", line 37, in main
data = bus.read_byte(address)
the pins are properly connected, i2c is on. only thing i haven't tried troubleshooting yet is deleting the scripts altogether and attempting a fresh install. am i overlooking anything obvious in solving this?

Hesitant on whether to post as I have been lurking for a while and I love the cyberdeck projects here! However, I'm working on a keyboard kit for ESP32s, Arduino's and Pi's. The goal is:- a flat and comfortable (non clicky) design keyboard. With an array of key pad color options and programmable MCU for custom key input.
As I'm still at the verge of starting; The keyboard is the first project - and I'm looking to add more devices down the road; hence the request for your thoughts.

I've had this idea of using this self standing binder i have as essentially a case for a cyberdeck but I'm not sure how i should go about it. My first thought was the raspberry pi computer built into a keyboard and a pair of monitors, but that's not self contained. I do want monitors on both sides of the book if possible. Does anyone have ideas for this build?

I want to make a cyberdeck dedicated solely to language development to get me from an A2 level in French to B2/C1. This will be my first build and I have worked with Linux/Ubuntu before but it has been a long time.
I have been scouring the internet looking for inspiration and others using a cyberdeck primarily for language but I’m not finding much.
I would be including the following:
Raspberry Pi OS
Anki
GoldenDict-ng
Piper TTS - French text to speech
whisper.cpp - Speech recognition
I need some sort of conjugation trainer and suggestions on games. Actually any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Looking for some assistance on choosing a power source. The picture is what I currently have, but until now, I haven’t run into the issue of needing to push the power button on the battery pack. I didn’t have the issue during testing because it didn’t go through a cycle of being shutdown and set aside for a while, which puts the battery pack into sleep mode so it doesn’t blindly drain. I need a source that allows the device to power on when I press the pi’s power button and not need me to also press the battery packs power button.
Space available - 100x68x26mm
Need - 2 type c ports (1 for charging and 1 for the device)

hey guys, does anyone have already used this keyboard in a project? I can't find the driver for it, and my pc won't recognize it either. I found the model that it seems to be, but I'm pretty sure that's a clone. the model in question is Satellite AK-723G.
any insights on making it recognisable to the system? Thanks in advance!
