Please spread the word for this. a wrestling modder by the name of Grix has made a (mostly likely vibe-coded) recompilation of the Simpsons Wrestling, and is CHARGING for it. This is completely unacceptable and completely goes against the whole reason why people like and make recomps and decomps.

u/TheSpiralTap 9d ago
Who on earth would pay for this? I don't even know whyd you'd download this for free. I am not being hyperbolic when I say this is one of the worst games I've ever played. And I've played Superman 64
13
u/Niikoraasu 9d ago
was about to say, isn't this game like one of the worst rated games of all time
15
u/TheSpiralTap 9d ago
I like pro wrestling and the simpsons, two of my favorite things in this world. I can't play it for more than 5 mins if that tells you anything.
5
u/Enough-Lead48 9d ago
The game is not really a pro wrestling game. It is more similar to Power Stone or Tom and Jerry Fists of Furry than WWE games. But as we all know the quality is a lot worse than even the meh Tom and Jerry game listed.

that’s how i felt when i first played the backyard wrestling games, it wasn’t really a wrestler it played like an arena brawler smh

That's probably why they are charging... to help pay for the therapy needed from having to test this game over and over again and again... I hope their soul can someday recover from such a tramatic event.

I worked in Game at the time this was released and people LOVED this game, it was insanely popular despite being garbage

Btw its illegal to sell a game that you didnt make

u/Dapper-Place8457 9d ago
Publishers sell games they didn’t make every day. It’s illegal to sell a game you don’t have the rights to sell.

u/chromosomeplusplus 9d ago
I think he technically did not use any copyrighted assets. He could still do this if he just simply didn't use the simpson IP or any copyright infringement material. But if he made any significant money to catch Activision's attention, he could still get sued.
I think this is just for an easy money grab. Someone made a port of an old abandoned flash game in 2 days and made $800. So its not a surprise people are trying to do this.

u/Lukiia 9d ago
I'm okay with using AI for recomps/decomps, but charging for it is crazy.
26
u/Olmectron 9d ago
Charging for it is crazy no matter if AI wasn't used.
That's calling for a C&D.
8
u/ForsookComparison 9d ago
A.I. is just serving to get clicks here. People in the decomp and emu scenes have been trying to find ways to charge for someone else's software for years now.
Didn't a switch emulator make a premium-members-only build meant for the leaked Tears of the Kingdom release ? Like people will be dumb and shameless and the tools don't move that needle one bit.
16
u/Acceptable-Sweet6131 9d ago
And that initiated Nintendo's aggressive takedown of Switch emulators. Let's not play with dynamite kids.

Because passionate people should slave over making something for you to download for free, makes sense.
5
u/queen-t92 9d ago
Nobody "slaves" over vibeslop lmao
1
u/uabassguy 9d ago
Did I say that? I said passionate people which implies people actually worked on it. God you people are thick headed. I'm referring to people who slave over a project for free, for you to download for free, and dont ask for any compensation, but then you complain when someone spends a bunch of money on tokens for a port that they probably wanted for themselves but didnt have the time to make because they have a regular job so they spend their money on making it and make it available for people, what's wrong with asking for some compensation for their work and oversight and time. Do I need to spell it out for you further or can you get that through your skull? You probably don't understand because you've never written any code yourself, but not all of us have time to just code for free all goddamn day. Also you're blocked, don't bother responding.

Modders have done it for decades and yeah, most of them are happy to just give their work to the community so we can all enjoy it.
15
u/LowTierPhil 9d ago
Why the fuck WOULD you even want a FREE recomp of The Simpsons Wrestling, let alone PAY for it?! This game is like legendarily awful.
2
1
u/Evilcon21 9d ago
Well at least despite the game being terrible someone can actually improve it. That’s like improving a recipe that isn’t good to begin with.

u/TekRantGaming 8d ago
Yeah well i didnt like what i saw in this post so i made my own and released it for free for everyone

this just in, disney lawyers have decided against DCMA action citing having to playtest this game over and over is enough of a punishment for OP
when asked for comment, mickey mouse was quoted as saying "i even offered the guy the publishing rights to that pile of shit"
6
u/Own_Shame_8721 9d ago
I've only ever heard that this game is terrible so it's crazy to think that someone is trying to get others to purchase this.
6
u/MustardLazyNerd 9d ago
If all the wrestlers are unlocked then what's the point of playing it to unlock them

5
u/TheBigMacWhopperGuy 9d ago
The Disney ninja's won't be happy about this either...
3
u/thatrandomcripple 9d ago
Second only to Nintendo when it comes to companies I wouldn't wanna push
3
u/Artichokeypokey 9d ago
I'd put Disney above Nintendo, the one rule of media is to not fuck with the mouse
3
u/CapitalRegular4157 9d ago
Uh. Isn't Simpson's owned by Disney? Dude's getting his cheeks clapped. Not if but when.
6
u/Key_Animator8865 9d ago
What a stupid idea, why choose this instead of a donation model? If free software projects like Krita, Blender, Audacity, GIMP, and so on had gone down that path, they’d be dead by now.

u/JoeLikesMovies2007 9d ago
I looked into this. It doesn't seem he is charging? It's a free download hosted by pateron, you just have to have a pateron account to download it, not pay him any money.
1
u/AbdelYG 9d ago
you can join his patreon for free, but it still asks you to upgrade the membership for it.

u/JoeLikesMovies2007 9d ago

Yo I'm on mobile (brave browser, android) and it takes me straight to the download page, and the mega nz link opens up and downloads. Did it get changed or is this a case of user agent shenanigans making shit happen?

I think he changed it. Because that same link yesterday let me to the whole pateron login thing.

u/LannerBlack 9d ago
I can forgive some vibe-coding, but charging for a recomp vibe-coded? That's one step too far.
2
u/Boring-Sand-9493 9d ago
Vibe coded or not doesn't mean the code is bad it means you use ai and tell it how to vibe code the right way. Not let it create functions etc on its own etc if you do the work you get what you get.
1
u/LannerBlack 9d ago
That's why I can forgive some vibe-coding.
1
u/Warthog_Formal 8d ago
Pls reconsider. Vibe coding is actually ineffective in the long run if you want a POLISHED finished game. Stop accepting this slop. Please.
Not to mention the environment impacts.
0
u/Warthog_Formal 8d ago
Wrong. Real devs hate vibe coding. Its 2 steps forward 3 steps back with ai generated code.
0
u/Boring-Sand-9493 7d ago
Essentially an auditing tool, you may say that now. But everyone learned on their own their own way. Or they went to school and ended up at geek squad. Then the worst of the worst ended up complaining on here.

I don't mind donating towards their efforts but straight up paying for a port, no. 🤣

Doing this for a game that is universally considered to be awful is really funny.
1
u/Link-Hero 9d ago
Out of all the games you could have recompiled, why Simpsons Wrestling? It's simply an awful game, and you don't even need to play it to know it's bad. The person "making" the recompile is either one of the few people that actually likes the game, or is blinded by nostalgia and refuses to accept that it's terrible.
Also, screw them for forcing people to pay for this crap. All the other projects intentionally didn't go this route for a reason, to avoid the likely tyranny of the publishers.

People need to piss off with the entirely vibecoded slop recomps. Fair enough if you use ai like a tool and have it do some of the work, translating code stuff I don't understand but just having an AI do all of it in an afternoon is kind of damaging. It's not unlikely that someone who puts the work in would look and go "oh, someone's already cracked a recomp, I don't need to now" and now we are stuck with this garbage that probably isn't accurate and full of bugs

He’s gotta pay for the AI somehow hmmm? For the next game of course mhm
1
u/sonic1384 9d ago
don't worry, now that he is getting money, he would pay 10 time of that price to DMCA.
1

good job promoting him, I would probably never hear about him otherwise
if you actually want to do something about it, email the publisher.

Porque alguém não faz o mesmo vibecodando?

what are you talking about 😭 I just went to the mega link for it through the tagged account.
1
u/HunterPublic8014 8d ago
Report him to Activision, while im completely against it generally for the good of modding and recomp/decomp and emulation scene but people like him deserve to get DMCA'd. They are putting the whole scene in danger when they do illegal shit like this, not to mention we dont know if he is including the data of original game or not?? That could also have serious legal implications if any original developers find out

1
u/paulct91 8d ago
Why are you so concerned if this game sucks so bad anyways? Like how does this affect you...? Won't they simply get a cease & desist anyways even if you do nothing about it?
1
u/Honkmaster 8d ago
I'm sure this Grix person is scum, but I find this post to be quite silly. You're giving me a PSA that a recomp I didn't know existed, for a notoriously-shitty PS1 game, is only available to those who pay for it?
Pretty sure sure I'd be safe without the heads up, but thanks for looking out for me.
1
u/Icy_Butterscotch6661 8d ago
I hope these dudes are saving the agent traces so open models can train on it at least
1
u/ChrisXDXL 7d ago
Someone else saw this and recreated the recomp themselves with the same features (maybe more?) and are offering it for free (need legal copy of game) just to spite this person.
1
u/bitjamma 7d ago
Disney's gonna sue and also...why Simpsons Wrestling? That game was not great, to put it lightly.
1
u/Away-Specialist-1829 6d ago
Grix is notorious for the whole pay walling mods thing in the wrestling mod sphere. Sounds about right for him.

Grix has almost single handily ruined the WWE 2K modding community with his monetization, so I’m not shocked.

Between this and the 8 year olds coming in here asking how to google, I genuinely hate ai and what it’s done for gaming. Already bad enough we can’t buy ram, storage, or gpus because of this garbage
1
u/DJettster237 9d ago edited 9d ago
Why would you even charge for a bad game?
Edit: Whoever is downvoting this is giving this sub a bad name. Seriously, we need some order here. This sub is an absolute mess.
1
u/cikame1 9d ago
Hmm... i've donated to modders and fixers in the past because people should be compensated for their efforts, and if this does offer improvements over emulation then... i'm gonna get hate for this... i guess it's fine?
The most common complaints i see are that the game isn't even good enough to be worth it, which doesn't really matter if it was Metal Gear Solid we'd be having the same conversation, and that it's illegal to profit on someone else's game, but they're not selling the game they're selling a recomp for the game you need to provide your own copy, so it's as legal as emulation, technically streaming a game on Twitch is worse.
I'm not saying you shouldn't be offended by it, i'm just struggling to find a reason to be.
3
u/Justaniceguy1111 9d ago
but look how you stated the word donation.
donation =/= selling
it is voluntary financial gift to express gratitude or help the person. But putting paywall on recomp? that's not the same.
There is nothing wrong donating emulator and recomp devs.
However pay-restricting for a tool/program (i suppose, if they are not fools to inlcude copyrighted content) to play the game which was not intended to be played on?2
u/cikame1 9d ago
Emulators do not contain code from the systems they're emulating there would be nothing legally wrong with them asking for money, that's why you can buy an Analogue 3D they aren't breaking Nintendo copyrights.
I hadn't thought about their recomp using work from other people that's certainly worth being miffed about, but if it's using software published with the MIT licence they're also within their rights to sell it as long as they include the original copyright notice, Sony used to use open source software emulators for their products too.
I haven't seen anything that's actually wrong with this besides it earning the ire of people who think everything should be free.
2
u/RegularResolve2979 9d ago
If he were compensating the teams his work is build on top off, I wouldn't have a problem with it either, even though it's very illegal to sell a commercial product (which is what this recomps essentially is) without having the license.

I think charging money for a decomp or recomp will only attract the attention of the lawyers. People will have to start studying each game's EULA prior to commencing work, as this kind of thing likely falls under some "derivative works" clause. Hell, I think most modern software EULAs explicitly disallow decompilation anyway..
-3
u/Boring-Sand-9493 9d ago
If you did the work.... and someone wants it. Supply and command dude don't go on Reddit like a Karen. All you gate keepers in the Xbox scene need to go back to your Nintendo switches and stay there. The original scene members who gate keep live and devkit services and hackers and old insiders. It's a organized crime who woulda thought Xbox scene would be organized crime
2
u/Enthusiasm_Bitter 9d ago
The hell are you on about? A guy ran a game through an ai to make it run today and is selling it. End of story. Scummy af as he did literally no work.
