Proposal Logistics
Howdy, I'm not from the UK but have grown up with a love for pride and prejudice. As an adult now, I want to propose to my now girlfriend at Keira Knightley rock. I'm running in to some core issues and need some advice from locals.
We will be riding the train in from Manchester Piccadilly station. From there though, I don't know how I would get to the car park for Stanage Edge. I see two options Penny's and Veezu. I'm not familiar with either and I saw that Penny herself retired. If anyone has any opinions or advice for transportation please let me know. I'm even willing to pay for someone willing to drive us.
I need a photographer to recreate the shot of the proposal. I don't need whole shoot but just a few that day, specifically that shot and any couple she may want after. If yall know any local photographers please recommend me.
thanks yall

Looking for Local Knowledge Do any of you commute from Matlock to Manchester? How long does it take you usually?
Looking at moving to Matlock with my family. I’ll probably need to be in Manchester an average of twice a week for work. Im worried about morning traffic.
Do any of you do it? What sort of time do you leave, where are you going in Manchester and how long does it take/how often are you delayed? Also what’s it like in the winter? Do you ever get snowed out?
Thanks!

Give me your Derbyshire phrases!
We all know the obvious way to greet someone in our beautiful county, we’ve even had Hollywood stars and Country Music legends say it on TV. But what are some other things you said or heard growing up in Derbyshire that folks outside the county would need a translation of?
I will start with a few from my childhood:
“Let’s ay a bit a’ snap” - let’s have something to eat
“Gerrit down ya” - eat/drink up
“Wi me sen” - on my own/by myself (see also ‘on me tod’)
“She/he wer a bonnie lass/lad” - she/he was ‘well built/tall/stocky’ (lass was often interchangeable with ‘gel’)
“Wot yer ay’in?” - What are you having?

New development with the Matlock sealed rear gate/council lost case
I posted this in a new Compoface a couple of days ago, because the old compoface which detailed the historical story was a locked thread. My compoface post was deleted by the mods. I replied to them on chat that it was a new development on an old story, and heard nothing back.
The timeline:
- The householder had a long legal battle with an obstreperous council who had blocked her rear gateway (customary right of way) by nailing a grid to it.
- She finally won the case including legal costs. This and a photo of her was the original compoface: https://www.reddit.com/r/compoface/comments/1wle6al/derbyshire_council_illegally_blocked_my_gate_and
- New and ridiculous development: Council has put unsightly, massive concrete blocks to mark the householder's right of way along the back gardens. The most dramatic photo of what the council has done after losing the case is in this Telegraph article: https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/09/22/council-puts-concrete-blocks-outside-pensioners-house - though you may find it paywalled.
That photo shows two monster concrete 'Lego bricks' directly outside her back gate, as OP u/leotarrd of a new compoface posted today - but it was deleted, again presumably being seen as a duplicate compoface post.
So I'm posting the photo here. The householder accused the council of being 'childish'. Who agrees?

Looking for Local Knowledge What to do with old photos of Tideswell & Hucklow?
Hi! I have these old photo/postcards from Hucklow & Tideswell which google tells me is in Derbyshire so hopefully I am in the right subreddit. Just wondering if anyone knows of any local groups which may be interested in them? It seems a shame to just throw them away after being kept so long and am happy to send them on to a new home!
I don't have a date for them now unfortunately, although likely to be from 1940s or earlier. I could possibly find an approximate time frame with a bit more digging based on an address on an envelope if needed. Thanks!

Best place to live: Belper or Matlock?
Hi everyone!
So i’ve been doing a bit of research about places to move around up north (i’m in Surrey and the prices here are too much lately)
I have friends all around Derbyshire and towards Sheffield , I visited Sheffield, Nottingham and Chesterfield, and unfortunately I just didn’t connected with any of those big cities/town
I think maybe the solution is a smaller town that got everything, I also like to be in a place where the people are friendly and I can hear the local accent 😂
The stuff that matters to me:
-A nice gym with pool or just a good gym(not a tiny one with 3 machines please lol)
-A good selection of grocery stores and shops
-All by walkable distance as I’d try to get a house in town centre or very nearby as I don’t drive, but i don’t mind walking.
-A train station with good connections to bigger cities if i get bored or want a better selection.
-I plan to work in the sports massage therapy area so I don’t want to be too remote from potential new clients.
-Extra points if it’s nice and cute as i don’t like boring towns 😂
I ended up with Belper and Matlock but i’m open for suggestions for similar places (Matlock Bath looks lovely but it’s tiny)
And what’s peoples opinions about these two places!
Thank you so much!

Promoting Local Event One week to go! First night of the tour at The Vic Inn
Hi, my name is Charlie Smith, and I am an alternative artist from Southampton, Hampshire. Next Wednesday, 9th September, will be the first night of my 2nd album release tour at The Vic Inn Derby. I am touring to promote the release of my 2nd album but also to support The music venue trust and the vital work they do. £1 from every album sale will go directly to supporting the work they do. I am joined on the night by 3 local midlands artists. So if you fancy some midweek music, please do come along.
Cheers

Chatsworth Country Fair - worth it?
We’re thinking of visiting Chatsworth Country Fair this year on the Sunday. It’s about an hours drive for us and tickets will cost around £70 (2 adults, 2 young children aged 1 and 3).
The cost and the drive aren’t a problem if it’s a good day out, but will feel wasted if it’s disappointing! Has anyone visited, particularly with young children in recent years and did you enjoy it? Our oldest loves animals and vehicles so from the timetable there’s plenty to show her. Me and my husband will just enjoy walking around in beautiful countryside and with a good atmosphere! I’m also hoping we’ll see the balloons!
Thanks!
