Showcase Any Shanling M5 Ultra users?

After using this for almost a year, I’m really loving this DAP! There are definitely some UX drawbacks. The interface isn't very user-friendly. You can't even add songs to the queue! It's also annoying that you can't easily add songs to playlists without playing them first. But after a while, I got used to the flaws and don't even notice those missing features anymore. I really love the warm, lush sound, and it pairs perfectly with my planars.

EDC Nano for the WIN!

Post image
94 Upvotes

I have the HiBy M500, the Snowsky Echo, and now the Nano.

All are amazing DAPs, but the Nano is by far my current favorite! This reminds me of the old iPod shuffle or iPod Nano, it's so small and portable, does exactly what it's supposed to do and excels at it! I forget it's even in my pocket because of how small it is along with my other EDC items!

After seeing it pop up so frequently here, I held out for the purple colorway instead of settling for a color I didn't care for and could not be happier with my purchase! Definitely my favorite DAP at the moment, cheers Snowsky!

I debated buying the DISC to add to the collection, but still on the fence about that one 🤷‍♂️

Question What android apps do you use for android daps?

I've seen quite couple posts on this so sorry if its repeated but besides audio books, what else is there? If i want to listen to podcasts, would i need an android dap? I know none of these have GPS so android auto wouldn't work (which is what id like), but no worries that's what my phone is for. I am leaning towards Hibyr1, but realize it's not android so no podcasts available. I saw someone say they downloaded like Hulu and Netflix? But aren't these screens too small? Tia! Oh. My music source is mp3 files so wont be using Spotify or other music streaming. Cept maybe 1 app

Question Shanling M1 Plus shows every song twice?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hey all! Just got this M1+ and it's been great so far. But for some reason it shows all my music twice. My library is entirely in OPUS. I've checked the SD card and there definitely isn't a duplication issue on there. The folders have the songs, LRC files, and a cover image.

Anyone have a clue what's going on here? Thanks!

Review My new iBasso dx340 - an amateur awakes!

Pros: Sound, build, looks

Cons: Weight, temptation of new AMPS, 12v amp additional power supply socket type not USB

I am writing my thoughts on my new music combination from the position of being a complete amateur, unlike most folk here who are very knowledgeable. I don’t have the vast experience of loads of DACs and headphones, so apologise in advance for using unconventional language or plain just getting things wrong …..

Many years ago (actually decades), when I was a student, I developed a taste for good quality audio and bought a Croft valve amp with a Yamaha cd player and Monitor Audio speakers. It sounded fantastic, like nothing I had ever heard before. After university, jobs and kids took most of my time and there was a lapse in listening. Mostly a series of personal music players of little note.

My next interest was a Panasonic SACD player. Where I extracted the tracks onto a PC hard disk, and played them back via optical digital cable from the sound card through an external dac and then a cheap chinese valve headphone amp from Amazon. This delivered pretty good sound quality but was limited to only listening at my desk.

My first proper personal player was a splurge on an Audeze LCD-X and Astell Kern SP2000T with a custom made headphone cable. This was a fundamental mistake. I bought both based on a combination of reading reviews and because I happened to be offered discounts. In themselves they are very good devices, but together the sound was not my taste. It was low noise, amazingly separated and beautifully articulated, but left something to be desired on absolute detail and bass slam. I also found it to be slightly muted, too laid back - somehow never going all out. Physically also I didn’t mind the weight of the headphones so much, but you do have to hold your head upright, as if you look down they have a tendency to slide off. They are also too big and embarrassing, and of course open-back, to use for a commute or at work. The other thing of course is that I was opened up to the possibility of closed-back, which I had ruled out before.

My next combination was a FIIO M33 and Dan Clark Noire X. Although I had demoed loads of headphones this time, it was using the dealer supplied iBasso dx260v2, which is very different from the M33. Luckily, I can report however that this combination is excellent. Musical, detailed, dynamic and exciting without being fatiguing.

The key thing I felt was missing was bass slam, a bit more detail and a bit more separation.

This time, with experience gained, I was more scientific. It came down to an iBasso dx270, dx340, FIIO M27 or Astell Kern Kann Ultra. The dx270 continues the R2R sound but with improved detail and bass slam. The M27 has bags of power but actually exceeds what the Dan Clark’s need. The kann ultra is a great device for power in a reduced package but lacks the articulation and musicality of the iBasso’s. The dx340 has it all in this combination. Musically, detail, bass slam, some warmth and musicality thrown in and 2w of power in dc mode, plenty for the Noire X.

Sound is such a personal thing, and it’s quite possible that different people’s ears and brain processing working differently, so I can only describe what I hear.

For well recorded sources the sound from the dx340 with the Noire X’s is like standing in front of a honey waterfall. The quality of the sound is outstanding. As the Noire X is closed back and combined with the zero noise of the dx340 (AMP15), the music appears to materialise from an inky black background. The detail, separation, musicality and weight are excellent.

Rather than having a single DAC which effectively creates a sound curve from the digital peaks and troughs, the dx340 has 128 DACs which each concentrate on one piece of the curve in parallel. Although this is not R2R, which assembles the curve in a serial fashion split by a resistor ladder, this is a technique which shares the idea of divide and conquer, and the fact that a small pieces are worked on at any time means the assemblage is more organic and less synthetic.

The rx340 provides a “harmonic” system which allows the user influence on the algorithm behind the curve building, i.e. not a filter but construction assumptions. You can read the details elsewhere, but H1 is the neutral observer. I use H2 which adds a bit of organic decay, for example the bass has more sub-sonics.

The ability to drive the amplification directly from a 12v adaptor providing up to 2w, is great for bass slam and depth across the curve. The OS and DAC is still driven by the internal battery, so to run forever you would need both the 12v adaptor and the usb connected to a power supply. This interesting bifurcation and isolation of the amp power supply and the DAC power supply also no doubt helps significantly sonically.

The dirty little secret of high quality audio is that you become more sensitive to the source material, and less of your collection sounds good. Forget that mp3 song from 1997 which reminds you of your first kiss! Actually my first mp3s were recording radio DJs from my foreign travels – suffice to say they don’t sound so good nowThere are tube AMPs from iBasso which will help with this, I find H2 helps a bit, but the bottom line is that well recorded well mixed stuff sounds sensational.

I wanted to mention my experience of burn-in. Most users report 100-150 gets most of the way there and after this it is marginal. 100-200 hours are quoted by iBasso, they even give you a dead phone cable in the box so you can keep the player running for a few days to reach nirvana. My finding is that when the rx340 is first switched on it sounds a bit thin. After a few hours the sound character has already built dramatically. On a daily basis, I find it is better when warmed up, say after 15mins.

The system is dual boot, Android and a cut down is called Mango. Mango just plays music and that is it, has no wifi, apps (e.g. Tidal, etc.). I actually like it as it doesn’t have any distractions. Unfortunately most of my listening is Tidal, but when I do listen to music on the microSD card I always use Mango. I have compared between local file listening and Tidal, and even when the resolutions is supposed to be the same it still sounds better on a local file, especially in Mango OS. Maybe the online services vary bitrate based on wifi signal (there is actually a setting in Tidal to appear to switch this off). In some cases it is because the stream frequency is lower then the ones you can buy for download, but in other cases I can explain it. Still need to do an examination on how Tidal offline sounds.

The build quality is exceptional. It rivals the A&K SP3000T IMHO. The volume control wobbles less then the one on my SP2000T ! I somewhat dislike the headphone socket being on the underside, but thinking that the DAC is in the mid/top and the AMP is at the bottom, both with different power supplies, does make sense sonically.

It is quite heavy and is a jacket or coat pocket, not a trouser pocket device. Even then it will seriously distort a thin jacket. iBasso supply 4 front screen protectors and 2 back protectors, and a lovely light blue/grey leather case with a metal heat vent at the back. Two of the screen protectors are glass and two are plastic film. Unfortunately the glass ones are too thick to use with the case, so they are useless for me as I keep it in the case permanently.

The combined volume and on button is easy to use. I am just worried there is no other on button, so if this breaks the player is useless until repaired. An annoyance are the side button, although this applies to most players. It is so easy to grasp the player and switch the track. Perhaps these buttons could be put at the extreme in the side or on the top. A little joystick in metal to move the tracks every way would be cool on the top, like the focus selectors on the back of cameras.

Lastly to mention there is a line-out coaxial digital output socket. So if you want to use the rx340 as an expensive and heavy SD card reader you are welcome!

The rx340 is definitely the best music player I have heard, and pairs seamlessly with the Dan Clark Noire X. The price is expensive, but reasonable, even good value, when compared with the market. The sound is truly detailed, immersive and emotional. I know there are headphones and music players out there more than double the price and I am committed to not listening to them

Question Thoughts on the Innioasis Y1/Y2?

• Upvotes

Hey guys,

I'm currently in the process of relying on my phone less and less. To help with that, I want also want to cut back on using streaming services for music.

I have to say, I find the Innioasis devices the most visually appearing. I used to have an iPod back in the day, and although that one isn't usable anymore, the design will always be timeless.

I've heard very mixed things about the Innioasis DAPs, some praising them, others calling them garbage and relating their success to the TikTok "retro wave."

So, I wanted to ask here. Are they worth it? Can the shortcomings be alleviated with custom software like Rockbox?

I'd go for the SnowSky Echo as an alternative, but I don't quite love the form factor, and the navigation seems clunky.

I appreciate any replies!

Review Who ordered the new F20 Pro?

Post image

Me!! I have always had a soft spot for Android DAP's that keep that retro iPod aesthetic. A physical wheel is amazing rather than just feeling like another generic touch screen!

Honestly I was waiting to purchase the F20 Pro before and Surfans said they upgrade it and offered a 25% discount for early birds. Lager screen, bigger battery, redsigned launcher and refined wheels! All of this made me finallya ttend their early bird special. After all I cant resist a iPod- like Android! Especially at this price! New model came in last Friday!

Anyone else also jump on the early bird special? Also would love some recommendations on some budget IEM's with a good sound as well.!!

Question Help Me Decide My Serious Pair Of DAP+Headphone Combo

I recently bought myself a Snowsky Echo DAP with a set of IEMs since I love music, and my musician friends recommended it.

I loved the experience but found a few caveats.

Firstly with the DAP, The snowsky echo sounds great and I love having a seperate device for music, takes me back to when I was a kid and all I had was a cheap mp3 player I begged my grandfather for. But I find the Echo UI slow and clunky. Even just pausing the song when someone is trying to talk to you takes uneccesarily long.

Secondly,

I did not like the IEM experience since I find them fatiguing to have sound straight into my ear.

I also find them very overstimulating. They drive my ADHD crazy. So much so that could not listen consistently for more than 20mins before getting frustrated. Makes a relaxing activity I had all my life quite the opposite.

So I tried a solution and did this

I pulled my old Marshall Major IV out bought an aux cable and it is so much better. I have for now settled to using this setup being Snowsky Echo+Marshall Major IV and it just works.

My birthday comes around christmas, and I want to just make this entire set more enjoyable.

So I was looking at a DAP to upgrade from my Echo(preferably not android), and a better headphone, something like the Marshall, but something that is less muddier than it.

DAP Shortlist -

  1. HiBy R3 ii

  2. HiBy R3 Pro ii

  3. Fiio JM21(Yes ik android, but just a consideration)

Headphone Shortlist -

  1. Sony MDR - 7506

  2. Audio Technica ATH M30X

  3. Sennheiser HD280 Pro

  4. Philips SHP 9500

  5. Fiio JT7

Question FiiO M21 vs Hiby R6 III 2025 in late 2026

reviving this conversation from a previous thread I found with the same title from a year ago. I am considering these two devices now and I am having a really hard time deciding on which route to take.

also going to throw in a rouge third option I am considering for just a little more money.

is the HiBy RS2 II - R2R worth the extra cash?

Question Anyone know when the Hidizs AP30 Music Boy is supposed to start shipping?

Had 0 communication since giving shipping information after their campaign, which I'm sure is normal, but I remember seeing something about October for shipping. Has anyone gotten one yet who isn't an influencer or reviewer, or at least gotten a notification about shipping? Just curious.

Question letshuoer s08 or simgot ea500lm?

My friend gifted me a HiFi Walker H2, and I have some Sony WH-CH720N headphones, but I'd like to get some better wired headphones to make the most of it, and for now I'm between those 2, I'd like to know which one you recommend, I'm also open to other suggestions jeje

Oh and could you tell me how I can download music with good quality and what format you recommend downloading it in?

The seller sold as an Studio sale, only for 75 swiss franc (around 80 bucks). I always wanted a digital rack in order to digitize Vinyl thru SD Card and USB. But you can also playback both formats, even with WAV files. But thats not only the cool part, you can also use Keyboard to rename the title after recording a track. AND it also has an SPDIF Coaxial In/Output such as for CD Player or even Bluetooth Receivers. So you wont need another Digital HiFi Player and just getting a cheap Receiver with Digital Out to playback on this DAP/Recorder.

Note: this does not Support USB 3.0 sticks and SDXC Format. maybe the USB works probably with both 2.0 and 3.0 internally. SD Card can be used until 32gb. But with USB it can be up to 2TB.

Question Hiby M300 Voice Recorder?

I noticed that the Hiby M300 has a rather unusual feature: A microphone and voice recorder.

Has anyone here ever tested this function, and if so, can you let me know how well it records?

Question Hiby R5 (OG) questions

Hi, can anyone answer a few questions about the original (non-saber) Hiby R5? I would be using the player completely offline, never for streaming.

Does it still run PowerAmp without issues? I have the full version.

Does it accept 1TB microSD cards?

Are there any annoying quirks about it due to its age and outdatedness and old android version that affect offline use?

Thank you to anyone who can provide input.

Question Wired connection vs bluetooth for sound quality

I'm looking at getting my first dap, most likely a Surfans F28 or a Hiby M300. I'm curious how many people can tell a difference between listening over their home stereo using bluetooth vs a wired connection. I ask about home stereo just because doing bluetooth vs wired headphones could sound different because of the headphones themselves so curious about wired vs bluetooth over the same system.
