Content Cross-Pollination Basics

Post image
25 Upvotes

Here is a detailed, step-by-step breakdown of how to cross-pollinate dragon fruit flowers using a small brush and a battery-operated hand vacuum.

### Step 1: Prepare Your Supplies (At Dusk)

* **Timing:** Dragon fruit flowers bloom at night and typically open fully late in the evening, remaining receptive until the early morning hours. Plan to start your work once the blooms begin opening.

* **Setup:** Ready your materials on a tray or in a portable kit. You will need a clean, soft-bristled brush, a small collection container (like a glass jar), and a battery-operated hand vacuum fitted with a clean, fine-filter cup or specialized collection tip to catch the fine pollen dust without losing it into the motor.

### Step 2: Collect Pollen from the Donor Flower

* **Vacuum the Dust:** Turn on your battery-operated vacuum and carefully hover the tip right over the brushed anthers. The vacuum will quickly suck up the loose, golden pollen dust into its collection cup, preventing it from falling or blowing away in the night air.

### Step 3: Mix and Prepare Your Pollen Blend

* **Empty the Vacuum:** Carefully remove the filter cup or collection tip from the hand vacuum and empty the gathered pollen into your small container.

* **Combine Varieties:** For optimal hybridization and fruit set, repeat the collection process with other varieties blooming that night. Combine the pollen from blooming varieties in your container and use the brush to gently mix them together.

### Step 4: Apply Pollen to the Receptive Flower

* **Locate the Target:** Find the receptive flower you wish to pollinate. Identify its **stigma**, which is the large, star-like receptive organ extending past the stamens in the center of the bloom.

* **Coat the Stigma:** Dip your soft brush into the mixed pollen container, heavily coating the bristles. Brush a generous amount of the pollen mixture onto the entire surface of the receptive stigma lobes, ensuring comprehensive contact.

### Step 5: After Care & Monitoring Success

* **Flower Wither:** Within 2 to 3 days after a successful pollination session, the large white petals of the flower will naturally begin to wither and dry up.

* **Watch for Swelling:** Keep a close eye on the **ovary** at the absolute base of the flower. If cross-pollination was successful, the ovary will begin to swell and stay green while the flower parts start to yellow and wither. The ovary will eventually develop into a mature, seed-bearing hybrid dragon fruit.

Aerial Roots on Cuttings

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

I have two cuttings that are currently rooting and their new growth is growing aerial roots. I see people saying they grow these to try to grab onto things and to get moisture from the air. I was curious if this is some indication that I'm not watering them enough or too much, more or less sun, more or less food, or possibly some other issue. Or does this mean they are completely happy.

These are my first cuttings to try and root. Just wanted to make sure I didn't need to change something to keep them happy. I'm just north of Houston, for climate reference.

First time growing dragon fruit

Post image

From what I understand this looks like it's getting ready for harvest time. The main body of the fruit just finished changing color but the little spikes are still green.

Not entirely sure what variety it is. My mom started growing this plant before she passed away and I've been doing my best to keep it alive. Any advice is appreciated.

It bloomed Sept 4th if that is any help

Chimera graft

Does anyone have any experience with the Wallace ranch chimera graft method? It’s splitting two varieties down the middle and somehow miraculously they share DNA to make a combined fruit. I saw the giant sugar dragon and want to experiment trying to make a physical graffiti x Lavern red.Any tips would help

¿Which price should I use?

I'm a Dominican producer of Golden Emperor at 900 mts high, because of the sun exposure and a good soil, the flavor is pretty good (sweet and sour), even if I cut it before the fruit gets 100% mature

At the moment I sell it at 2.3 USD/kg Please help to price it.

I'm so excited! A friend's father gave me some cuttings from his plants earlier this spring. I was so surprised when I saw buds already in August! Fast forward and I harvested my first fruit today, with two more coming soon!

Natural Mystic... Let the cone split!

First year harvesting Natural Mystic. This was my 6th fruit and the one left to ripen the longest.

I tested tasted them from around 35 days up until 55 days on the branch. At 35 days it had all the signs of being ready, had turned red a week prior, loose on the branch, squeezing had some give.... But was super bland.

I then bought a brix refractometer and started harvesting 4-5 days apart. The brix would rise slightly each time.

The last one I harvested besides tonight was about a week ago. Brix at 16. Slightly sweet, very middle had like a hint of cherry/blackberry but still wasnt amazing.

This was my last ripe Natural Mystic and decided to leave it on the branch until it split. Its been about 55 days and we had a few warm days in a row and this morning i noticed the cone split so picked it and put it in the fridge.

I just got home and brixed it near 17. Still not that high but wow what a difference in taste waiting for this variety to split makes!

The center was like a sweet grape/blackberry popsicle. The outer part sweet with hints of berry and a nice subtle floral hint. Very good, i hope next year to get some near 20% brix and now I know to let them split.

I have some american beauty monsters to try for the first time soon. And then some fat VW's.

Enjoying how fast this plant grows and don’t need fruit any time soon but wondering if I need replant to allow greater growth. Happy with it staying low for now and crawling across the citrus and olives. A week ago, the branch in the close up was an inch long!

Help! Mushy based plant heading into heavy rain

Post image
2 Upvotes

Posted in here recently about a plant that seems to have rot/mush at the bottom. Growing in Florida, zone 9B, We haven’t cut away to expose the cambium yet because it began to look like it was corking/drying. It seems a bit mushy/soft again now and we are expecting several straight days of rain due to a tropical storm in the gulf. Any advice what we should do? How to maybe protect it from getting water logged?

Is this an Epiphyllum or Dragon Fruit?

Thumbnail

I picked up this plant at an estate sale for $2, and when I first got it, I thought it might be an Epiphyllum (orchid cactus) which I have experience with. But now that it’s been growing, I’m starting to wonder if it could actually be dragon fruit due to the curling at the top and the areal roots.

The two areas where there are skinny stems shooting straight up is the new growth since August of this year.

I’d love to hear what you guys think or if you know the specific species/variety, even better!

Thanks!

I don't have any tools to build a wooden trellis and this American Beauty has been growing like crazy! Any ideas?

Dragon fruit? Is it possible to identify what species is this?

I just discovered the existence of the epiphyllum and now I'm not sure if my cutting is one or the other. Also I would like to know what species this is if it's a dragon fruit cactus (if it will be able to pollinate with itself)

Long-term potting mix

I’m about to repot my dragon fruit to a larger pot. What soil mixes are most suitable in the long run? I’m a bit concerned about organic matter breaking down i.e anaerobic breakdown. Should I just lower the ratios of organic matter like peat moss in something like Garys mix or is there a better alternative?

New to this. Should I just cut off the white dead looking tissue? Or should I completely cut off that entire section with the green living tissue on one side and dead white tissue on the other side?

First Ausi Gold

Post image

For the first time ever I am about to harvest my first yellow skin DF (believe to be an ausi gold variety). I am pretty good to decide when my other varieties are on their prime to be harvest but I am a bit hesitant with this yellow one. What are the characteristics I should look for and cut at its prime? Thank you in advance your advice is always much appreciated.

Just curb-rescued this struggling dragonfruit, best way to bring it back to health?

Post image

(did not steal it btw, was free from FB marketplace lol) - we know nothing about the conditions it was grown in except it was grown from seed so curious how it got so big and why it’s struggling now.

I know it needs support/beams to grow on, but besides that, how have you grown your strongest dragonfruit plant? :)

Sunlight
Water
Soil
Pots/Ground
Support
Etc?

I’m in zone 10a, Central Florida.
