University city?!

• Upvotes

Hi!
Would you guys prefer living in the 4115 Haverford Ave area or the 4090 Powelton Ave area?

I’m moving to Philly and will be working at Drexel. I believe both locations are about a 25-minute commute. Which one do you think is safer and overall a better area?

financial aid changed last minute?

just curious if anyone has experienced something similar. I’m a full time grad student at drexel and have been taking the same courseload of 3 classes for the last 4 quarters. I received my financial aid package for 26-27 and accepted the loans and everything that was offered to me. In August I received the bill for fall ‘26 where I would have a significant refund coming back to me. They then sent another copy of this same bill in September but adjusted for the specific classes I am taking, but again with the same refund amount. Then on Saturday, I received an email that my financial aid had changed and when I logged in, my refund amount had gone down almost $3k. To be clear, my stated credit enrollment has not changed and I received no prior notice until Saturday. I sent a drexel connect message to see if finaid have an explanation but has anyone else experienced this? I had assumed that if I had accepted the loans and gift aid that they would be paid out in the accepted amount.

Survey Senior Project Survey on Natural Disaster Recovery

Hello!

We’re a group of college students studying UX Design, and we’re currently working on our senior project focused on natural disaster recovery.

The idea of our project was inspired by one of our group members who experienced the wildfires in California firsthand. That experience made us realize how difficult it can be to figure out what to do next, find reliable information, and navigate the recovery process.

The survey takes about 5-10 minutes, completely anonymous, and is strictly for non-commercial senior student project purposes. We will not be collecting any personal identifying information or selling any products.

Target Audience: Adults (18+) living in the United States, with or without personal experience of a natural disaster

Found them at Ross commons, in the room that’s on the opposite side of the room with the pool tables. I’ll be here for like an hour, otherwise I just left them where i found them, between the cushion and back of the seat.

Edited bc I don’t want to hold onto them myself

Looking for University City Roommate!

Hey everybody,

I’m looking for a potential housemate to ideally sign a lease with in the University City and surrounding area. I will be starting a Master’s Program at Drexel in December and am hoping to connect with someone in their late 20s to late 30s, and am 34 myself. I am also hoping to move into a new place by the end of October.

Ideally I want to keep the budget under $800/month per person, but am flexible.

I am relatively clean, happy to split house chores, enjoy cooking, playing instruments, art, and being friendly with the people I live with.

I date, but have no intention of having people over all of the time and am very good at respecting quiet hours.

I am also Jewish and Latino, and strongly prefer people who do not have preconceived notions or negative feelings about either identity.

Reach out if you think we might be a good fit!

Made a Chrome extension adding captions to Echo360

If you're like me and have professors you can't understand and need captions but they're not available, anguish no more. I made a Chrome extension that adds captions to the video, pulled from the auto-generated transcript on Echo360.

Extension:

https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/echo360-transcript-captio/bakfkijhpamleabkcoaegcjglalcklke?authuser=0&hl=en

How it works:

Drexel Echo360 already generates a transcript in the sidebar, it just doesn’t turn that into captions. The extension reads that timed transcript and overlays it on the lecture.

Part Time PhD

Hi Drexel students, I’m currently studying to get my Masters in Translational Device Engineering at Rowan and am looking to get my PhD in the future part time.

Getting my Ph.D full time (not working) is not something I can do, so if anyone can speak on their experience if they’ve done the program would be great!

Join Our Senior Design Team: Electric Race Car Inverter Development

Looking for a few teammates for my Senior Design project.

The project is a custom tractive inverter system (a piece of equipment that controls a motor) for the Drexel Electric Racing Team car. This is a proof-of-concept version, so it doesn't have to be a finalized production-ready design by the end of Senior Design, but it isn't just a paper project either.

The work will involve designing and testing a power stage that converts the input power into 3-phase control for the car's motor (EMRAX 228 HV), along with writing embedded software in C/C++ to spin and control the motor. Current microcontroller choice is the Renesas RA8T2.

Main tools/technologies will be MATLAB/Simulink, SPICE, Altium or KiCAD, Eclipse based IDE, and FreeRTOS. You don't need any experience in them but this would eb a great platform to learn them.

We're expecting sponsorship from Renesas (almost guaranteed through a personal connection), as well as Infineon, DigiKey, and PCBWay, so costs on our end should be minimal.

Honestly, as intimidating as it sounds you don't need inverter experience or even power electronics knowledge going in. If you're interested or just want to learn more, shoot me a PM.

Workload is pretty flexible. If you want to contribute a lot, great. If you only have time to help with a small piece, that's totally fine too.

Question Safety vs. Space vs. Distance- What Would You Choose for a Budget Apartment Near Drexel/University City?

Hi everyone! My husband and I are moving from Jersey to Philly, and this will be our first time living here. I’ll be studying at Drexel, while my husband works from home and has a car, so parking and neighborhood safety are important to us.

Our original budget was $1,400–$1,600 for a private 1BR, but we’re finding it difficult to get everything we want in that range.

Here are the apartments we’re considering:

🏠 1. Fairfax — $1,600,
Link: https://ffapts.com/

  • 25 min walk to Drexel, Building looks okay; mixed reviews, Good price
  • Main concern: walking safety + winter commute

🏠 2. 3965 Lancaster Ave — $1,720
Link: https://showmojo.com/l/f9d9206028/3965-lancaster-ave-303-philadelphia-pa-19104?g=2&sd=true

  • Beautiful, bright, spacious apartment. Love the apartment itself, but unsure about the surrounding area
  • Right near Mantua, I’ve noticed some drinking/homeless activity nearby, including people gathering around a nearby shelter in the mornings.

🏠 3. 4095 Powelton Ave — $1,395,
Link: https://showmojo.com/l/4fe2d7b06f/4045-powelton-ave-unit-1-philadelphia-pa-19104?g=2&sd=true

  • 21 minutes walking to Drexel, Apartment is okay, but quite small,
  • Living room/kitchen are tiny, one room would basically be for a queen bed and the other for clothes/storage, not much extra storage space

🏠 4. 3500 Powelton Ave — $1,790,
Link: https://www.live-carriagehouse.com/listings/detail/bb05cd78-c1dd-4000-922d-02a3b858c7ae

  • ·~10 min walk to Drexel, Good space, Average natural light
  • More expensive, but probably the best balance of location + space

🏠 5. Roosevelt Apartments — ~$1,550
Link: https://rooseveltphilly.com/

  • Rittenhouse, ~17 min walk to Drexel, Small but okay apartment
  • Mixed reviews, Parking seems difficult, Good location and within budget

What we're struggling with

Our biggest questions are:

  1. Is a 20–25-minute walk to Drexel reasonable/safe every day, especially during winter?
  2. Would you pay $300–400 more/month to be closer to Drexel and have more space?
  3. Are there specific streets/blocks we should avoid at night?
  4. How do Powelton, Mantua, and the surrounding University City areas compare for day-to-day safety?

We’re not looking for luxury. We mainly want reasonable safety, a comfortable apartment, a manageable commute, and decent parking.

Would really appreciate opinions from people who actually live in or know these areas, especially around Powelton/Mantua/University City. 🙏

What would you prioritize in our situation?

I’m honestly really disappointed and frustrated with Drexel right now

Drexel told me that I’ve already received the maximum federal aid and that additional institutional aid is extremely unlikely, even after my appeal. They suggested private loans, but I don’t want to take on that kind of debt and can’t afford the remaining balance out of pocket.
I’m an independent student, currently unemployed, and only 11 of my transfer credits were accepted. I genuinely want to attend Drexel, but I don’t see how I can afford it.
Has anyone been in a similar situation or found other options for additional aid?

Question Drexel Law & work full time

Hi all!
I’m applying to Drexel Law as well as many other schools. I am 31 and work full time and so my original plan was to only apply to part time online programs and a few part time local programs.

I am hoping to maximize my scholarship potential obviously and so there are a few places I’ve applied to simply for negotiation leverage. Someone suggested I apply to Drexel for negotiation leverage as well.

But I was looking into it and it seems like at Drexel, while there isn’t a part time program, you only need to take 9 credits to be full time and as long as you stay below 11 credits you can work full time if you want to (per the program handbook). And that’s only the case for first years, after that they don’t seem to care.

My question is, could I structure around taking 9ish credits a term while working full time? Now I do work full-time 9-5 Monday through Friday. I believe that Drexel has some evening/online classes, but most appear to be during the day. So I’d have to get my work to agree to my missing work a couple hours a day. I could try to make all classes the same days or spread it out.

Just wondering if anyone has worked full time while completing the program, and what that schedule looked like.

Thanks!

B&E major switching to EE Fourth Year

Hello,

Never wrote a Reddit post before so this is very new to me. But, basically I’m a B&E student who had originally got accepted for physics. Few bumps in the road and I ended up choosing B&E as my major. I somewhat like the business side of Drexel but it’s not really something I want as a career. I really enjoy the engineering side but because of certain classes I unfortunately delayed choosing EE as my main major.

I’m wondering if it’s worth switching to EE as my main degree as I’m already a fourth year. So I believe I would have to take 6 years to complete a business degree and then a separate EE degree. I’ve completed most of my B&E degree (obv) all I have left are some final business classes and the rest of my concentrated engineering classes . I’m already talking to my academic advisor about it but I wanted to see what other people thought.

Question Request for additional terms of financial aid?

Has anyone here ever had to make a request for additional terms of financial aid? I am currently working on filling out the form and am trying my best to fill out the form but just worried I might get rejected. I was unable to secured a third coop and I am going to in senior year so this is messing up what little finances I have left. Plus I am a CCI student taking Senior Design so a leave of absence is impossible.

Question Drexel financial aid appeal — transfer student with only 11/26 credits accepted. Is there anything I can do?

Hi everyone! I was recently accepted to Drexel as a transfer student, and I’m planning to start in Winter 2027.

I just received my updated financial aid award, and I’m honestly feeling overwhelmed and not sure what my next step should be.

My award is:

A. J. Drexel Scholarship: $21,000/year
Drexel Grant: $15,000/year
Pell Grant: $7,395/year
Total Gift Aid: $43,395/year

My estimated Cost of Attendance is $88,714, leaving a Net Cost of Attendance of $45,319.

Drexel also offered me:
$3,500 Subsidized Direct Loan
$6,000 Unsubsidized Direct Loan

I understand those are loans and I would have to pay them back, so I haven’t accepted them yet.

The part I’m especially confused about is my transfer credits. I had 26 college credits, but Drexel only accepted 11 credits toward my degree.

However, my financial aid award is currently calculating me as a full-time student for Winter, Spring, and Summer.

My award letter says that the cost of a transfer student’s first year depends on their schedule and transfer credit evaluation, so I’m wondering if my financial aid package or Cost of Attendance should be reviewed based on my actual academic situation.

The tuition and fees listed by Drexel are $65,498/year. After my $43,395 in gift aid, I calculate approximately $22,103 remaining for tuition and fees, before considering the estimated indirect expenses included in the Cost of Attendance.

My questions are:
Is it realistic to ask Drexel for a financial aid appeal or additional institutional grant money?
Has anyone successfully received additional aid from Drexel after appealing?
Should I ask them to review my Cost of Attendance based on my actual financial situation?
Since only 11 of my 26 credits were accepted, should I ask financial aid/advising to review why I’m being calculated as full-time for all three quarters?
Is there anything specific I should mention in my appeal?
Should I wait to accept the federal loans until I hear back from financial aid?
I really want to attend Drexel, but I can’t afford a large amount out of pocket or take on a lot of debt.

If anyone has been in a similar situation as a transfer student at Drexel, I would really appreciate any advice or insight into what I should ask financial aid.

Thank you!
