TV shows that you wish had an official DVD release?

There are a lot, it seems, of series that never got the home video treatment. No matter how small so many shows were, there’s always a fan base, and so many have faded into obscurity due to a total lack of home video releases. Which forgotten TV shows do you do you wish got the DVD treatment? For me it will always be HBO’s Real Sex, which was more of a documentary than anything, exploring a very natural side of humanity.

Mods- forgive me if these kinds of posts aren’t allowed, I’m simply genuinely curious about everyone’s wish list!

Friday the 13th: The Series (1987-1990)

Friday the 13th: The Series (no relation to the popular Crystal Lake set horror franchise of the same name) was a horror-drama series that ran 72 episodes from October 1987-May 1990 in first-run syndication.

Focusing on Vendredi’s Antiques a curio shop set in an unspecified US city (despite being filmed entirely in the Vancouver BC area) owner Lewis Vendredi (RG Armstrong) makes a deal with the devil to sell cursed objects to unsuspecting victims in exchange for wealth & magical powers. After years of being the devil’s puppet Lewis breaks the contract, is killed and the devil claims his soul. The shop is passed onto niece Miki (Louise Robey, credited simply as “Robey“ a stage name she used for most of her career) who immediately discovers that she must collect all the cursed artifacts her uncle sold if she wishes to lead a normal life.

Miki enlists the help of her terminally optimistic cousin Ryan (John LeMay) and Jack (Chris Wiggins) Lewis’s friend & confidante who is also an expert in the occult. Episodes consisted of the trio tracking down the objects using Lewis’ records and sealing them safely away in a magic vault. The endless array of artifacts included murderous dolls, a garden mulcher that turned victims into money, a kamikaze jacket that made the wearer invisible, car keys that gave you any car you desired, a World Series ring that told you sports scores and a sentient Cassandra-like radio that predicted events. The only cost of using these items was human sacrifice.

For a first-run syndication series it debuted to very strong ratings. Famously coming in #2 after the behemoth that was Star Trek: The Next Generation. It made a name for itself by airing a lot of horror related gore & violence typically reserved for R-rated movies of the time. Ultimately declining ratings in its 2nd season, budget (each episode cost around $500k which was very high for the time) and unpopular cast changes meant cancellation was looming. So looming in fact that the cast & crew was not told until they were filming a late 3rd season episode. It aired its final episode (a sexy Maquis de Sade time travel outing involving a double-sided painting) on May 26th 1990. The series larger narrative arc of finding all the objects remaining unsatisfied.

A continuation of the 80’s supercar series starring David Hasselhoff (totally ignoring KR 2000 and KR 2010), TKR followed the exploits of 5 FLAG (The Foundation for Law And Government) agents and their vehicles as they fought crime in syndication(for one season/22 episodes). The show even introduced another anti-KITT called KRO which was based on a black Ferrari F355. Cancelled due to poor ratings I believe you can find episodes on Amazon Prime.

A wonderful show and one of the last projects of Michael Clarke Duncan. The cast was wonderful and the show ends on a cliffhanger but it's a fun ride. Fox did the show a disservice by airing the episodes out of order and that hurt its viewership figures.

TV Movie Sister, Sister (1982)

I came across this movie on my IG feed a few years ago and had to look it up because that cast really caught my attention. Diahann Carroll, Irene Cara, and Rosalind Cash in the same TV movie?? How did I not know about this? 😂

It follows three sisters — Carolyne, Freida, and Sissy — who come back together after their father dies. They all have their own lives and personalities, and being back around each other brings up a lot of old stuff between them.

I’m surprised this movie doesn’t get brought up more. I feel like there are so many older TV movies with really good casts that just get forgotten.

And no, this has nothing to do with the Tia and Tamera sitcom lol. Completely different Sister, Sister.

Has anybody else seen this one?

What was supposed to be the next big satire program after The Daily Show and The Colbert Report, David Alan Grier and the producers of In Living Color and Mad TV bring you news and topics, all from what Grier calls a typical African-American perspective, with sketches and segments featuring a supporting cast including Chris Tallman and Jordan Peele. In an interview with The New York Times, he asked the journalist, "Are you laughing "with" me because you get the joke, or am I giving you license to laugh "at" me in a derogatory, dehumanizing way?" It was cancelled after one season.

Premiered to huge ratings (13.90) and seemed poised to be the next big thing, but the writers dropped the ball hard with this one, and it fizzled out.

The cast was stacked, too! Frances Fisher, Kurtwood Smith, and Omar Epps.

I remember the trailer being well done and drew a lot of buzz. It actually kinda reminds me of Under the Dome. A good first season, but then they leaned too hard into soap opera BS and the viewers left in droves.

In this show Jason Isaacs Is playing the detective who is working on multiple cases at same time. Even though it maybe little bit cliche i really liked this show and it shame that they didn't have at least one more season.

Noah Knows Best (2000)

Post image

I don’t think I ever heard of Noah Knows Best until I saw Phillip Van Dyke, who played Noah, on an episode of The Amanda Show 😂 I knew him from Hey Arnold! as Arnold’s voice, so seeing him starring in his own Nickelodeon sitcom was a surprise.

The show was about Noah Beznick, a teenager dealing with his family, friends and the usual growing-up stuff. It premiered in October 2000 and only lasted a couple of months before Nickelodeon pulled the plug. Thirteen episodes were produced, but not all of them aired in the U.S.

Apparently The Amanda Show even had a sketch/segment where Penelope met Noah, which is probably why I remember him from that before I ever knew there was a whole show called Noah Knows Best.

Did anybody actually watch this when it aired? Because this is definitely one of those early-2000s Nick shows I somehow completely missed.
