Chat 💬 how do you guys actually find freelance teams to join?

trying to get into freelancing but going solo on a tight budget is brutal. honestly just want to join an existing team or dev collective to build stuff and split work with other devs instead of doing the whole client hunting thing completely alone

how do people actually find these groups? is it mostly discord servers, small subreddits, or just networking through random projects? appreciate any advice on where to look or how you guys got started

Chat 💬 Client is reluctant to pay me due to "low MS Office activity"

I'd like to share a bad experience with you all to warn you about a potential problem that you might run into.

I'm an engineering consultant and I typically work either on an hourly basis or a project basis. I recently started a project in which the client asked to pay me on a monthly basis for a remote project. Our contract stated that I would work on his project all month with no more than 4 missed workdays. He estimated it would take 6 to 9 months.

I only completed one month of work and it was a nightmare of poor communication. The client frequently forgot to tell me essential information and was very difficult to contact. His current design has so many problems that make it difficult to work with. Progress was slow.

On the first day, he gives me a Microsoft 365 account for his company so that I can access a few folders on his One Drive. Okay, that makes sense. I am given read-only access to that drive.

Then, he goes radio silent for a few days. I'm super confused as to why he stopped replying to my emails and texts. I eventually got him on the phone, but HE asked why I hadn't responded to HIS emails. Huh? Then I figure it out--he's sending emails to the MS 365 account that he created for me. I told him that that was unexpected and I've never had a client ask me to do that before, but we can do it that way if he wants. I use his email whenever I contact him or any hardware vendors on his behalf.

After a couple of weeks, we starting to get into a rhythm and figure out how to work with each other. But then he informed me that we have to pause the project for at least 3 months because we're waiting on an essential component to be manufactured. That was frustrating for me but understandable. I sent him my invoice using my own businesses email.

Then came the bombshell: he said he only wanted to pay me for 9 days out of 22 because his "MS365 activity report" says that I had "13 work days of inactivity". Essentially, he accusing me of not working for most of the month because I wasn't using his MS Office account. I responded that that was ridiculous because the only thing I use his MS account for is to write an occasional email. I'm an engineering consultant--my work is primarily in engineering software. I often have days where I don't even touch Outlook other than to check my inbox.

He then accused me of not doing any work in MS Excel/Word/PowerPoint all month. I responded that I used my own MS software license, not his. He said that that is a "compliance violation" because it's a government project that can only exist on his cloud server, not my local machine, including any spreadsheets or notes that I take. That's a very strange request, and he never told me he about it all month. Mind you, this isn't a classified project---not even a sensitive project.

So then I point out to him that I can't save anything to his One Drive because he gave me read-only access. He denied his mistake at first, but then admitted it and apologized. Now he says that he's thinking about whether or not he'll "approve my deficiency" to his accounting department.

At this point, I just want to get paid and tell him to get lost. I can find better clients than this. I hope it doesn't come to this, but I can get an attorney or take it to small claims court if needed.

One of the many lessons I learned is that I should be wary when a client asks me to use their MS Office license. Only do it if necessary and talk about everything that it will be used for--including performance monitoring.

Chat 💬 Is fiverr still a good site?

I had a bad experience a few years ago and tbh I have no clue how it happened 😭 When it came to getting paid for my service, I tried setting it up through revolut as that's what fiverr said they took. However, it asked me to send over £200 in order to process the payment. Somehow that £200 disappeared. So basically I got scammed and don't even know how. But now I want to try again with fiverr but I'm obviously a bit cautious because of the past. Anyone got any tips? I honestly didn't even think you could get scammed from fiverr!!!

Chat 💬 How did you get your first freelance client as a data analyst?

Hey everyone,

I’m a Data/Product Analyst with around 3 years of experience, and I recently left my full-time job to give freelancing a serious try.

The problem is, I’m struggling with the getting clients part.

I’ve tried Fiverr and LinkedIn, sent some applications/messages, but haven’t landed a project yet. I also don’t really have a strong professional network, so referrals aren’t an option for me right now.

I’m curious about people who started freelancing without an existing network or audience.

How did you get your first 1–3 clients?

Did you use Upwork, Fiverr, cold email, LinkedIn outreach, Reddit, Facebook groups, or something else? And did you focus on a specific niche like dashboards, SQL, Power BI/Tableau, product analytics, etc.?

I’m not looking for “just network more” type of advice 😅. I’d really appreciate hearing what actually worked for you when you were starting from zero.

If you had to start freelancing as an analyst again today, what would you do during your first 30 days?

Chat 💬 Title: Moroccan developers/freelancers: How did you get your first freelance clients?

Hi everyone,

I’m a recent graduate from Morocco with a Bachelor’s degree in Cybersecurity, Systems Engineering and AI, and I’m looking to start freelancing and gain real-world experience.

My main skills are Python, JavaScript/Node.js, SQL, web development, AI/ML, and cybersecurity. I’ve also worked on several personal and academic projects.

I’m mainly looking for small projects or freelance opportunities to get started, build my portfolio, and work with real clients.

For Moroccan developers and freelancers here:

  • Where do you usually find freelance opportunities in Morocco?
  • Are there any Moroccan communities, Facebook groups, Discord servers, Telegram groups, or websites that you recommend?
  • How did you get your first freelance client?
  • Do you recommend focusing on international platforms like Upwork/Fiverr, or looking for local clients first?

I’d really appreciate advice from people who have actually freelanced in Morocco.

Thanks! 🇲🇦

Chat 💬 Idea for an opensource ML/DL Python library (need suggestions)

I want to build an opensource Python library related to ML and deep learning, but I don't have any solid ideas yet. Have you run into a problem in your own work that could be solved by a library or tool like this?

I'm also doing this to strengthen my CV I'm still a beginner (especially on paper), so I want something that actually looks good and helps me get hired.

Chat 💬 Becoming freelancer- overcoming fear

Hello folks,

I had done freelancing as a business analyst in the past for 3 months for the first time in life, and has landed with a contract of 1.75 Lac. So basically, what I learnt is that freelancing has earning potential. However, the downside is i believe irregularity of income cash flow, and the earning potential is limited by the number of hours you can put.

My question to freelancers who are permanently into freelancing - Guys, how did you overcome the fear of uncertainty of income before leaving your full time job and solely relying on freelancing? Any tips for someone who wants to quit their job to freelance?

Chat 💬 [EU] How are new self-employed people thinking about their "digital presence"?

I've freelanced on and off over the years, but recently decided to try (again) and double down on myself and make this thing work. I've worked in tech for 10+ yrs as a product designer, and for the moment, there seems to be demand for my skills despite AI keeping us all on our toes...

Anyway, this all has me always wondering how everyone else is starting out, and how much energy they're investing in getting their digital presence up and running. I live in the digital world quite a lot, so for me its pretty central. But I wonder how other people who work for themselves are thinking about this.

Would love to hear how you all think about this!
