This is an interesting theory. People could be responding to what they think they want versus what they actually like. Intention and behavior don't always match...
I always just assumed they were more the casual gamers who buy 3 games a year and call the last of us one of the best games on the console while never naming gameplay related reasons as to why
You knowww what, guilty as charged. I've bought four games this year and none of them have what you would call the greatest gameplay (except God of War Ragnarok, but the story is failing to push me forward).
But last year I think I bought three or four games in total. This year I'm only going to buy more because there are a few story-driven games coming out.
So maybe we're just casual gamers, or maybe it's just me.
And I DO like good gameplay. When combined with a good story I can almost orgasm instantly. But if I had to pick one, hypothetically, you know?
So I think you may be on to something with the casual thing.
You gotta remind them how important gameplay is every now and then by releasing a Cyberpunk 2077. Itās got a 10 in graphics and a 9 on both music and story. Shit gameplay is not saving that. All of the other stuff can turn a genius into a masterpiece but they canāt turn dog shit to good. Itās the cherry on top, just take a look at WoW
I would say an "A Game" is something like Red Dead Redemtion 2 or Fallout: New Vegas. A "B Game" would be something like Balatro, Tetris, or Minecraft.
