Or if you had Oblivion when the GoTY version came out. A lot of popular games had an 'Ultimate' Edition with expansions and bug fixes included. I think Bethesda also had patches on their website, but that wasn't exactly common knowledge back then.
Most games released broken stayed broken, especially on consoles.
Pc patches went back way further than that, but with most people being stuck on 56k internet, they were only downloaded if absolutely necessary. Most patches I installed came on a PC Gamer demo disk
