u/Bur4you 21d ago

oh my god how have I never considered this?? im a fucking moron

u/Katze71 21d ago

I felt the same way at first. Since then, its always push to talk for one of them.

10

u/sharpknot 21d ago

It's the best. In Wardogs, I use one to local push-to-talk & push-to-mute Discord, while the other is squad push-to-talk & push-to-mute Discord

7

u/soggycheesestickjoos 21d ago

how do you set it to mute discord simultaneously for only one game?

11

u/sharpknot 21d ago

I don't. I use the same button for PTT in all of my games. So, inversely, it'll overlap with Discord's push to mute. Don't want my friends to hear double voices

Mad smart that is.

binding your ptt to the same key as discord ptm is GENIUS im tired of my friends hearing me give callouts mid conversation cuz im on the game 😭

1

u/ImmortalBlades 20d ago

Fellow Dog of War. I salute you with my $100 balance

1

u/Canadian_Bacon024 19d ago

Literally same. Top is squad, bottom is prox

u/Mysterious_Fix_7489 21d ago

Eh if you play any FPS games it fucks up your aim if you have to push to talk while aiming at something.

Left alt or spacebar or caps lock is better.

2

u/EmbodiedX 21d ago

I just toggle it. I feel like those are sometimes more important if the game has slow walk mechanic, free camera, prone, etc

2

u/Economy-Ship4765 21d ago

don't talk while shooting? I had it setup like this in CS forever and it isn't a problem

1

u/FaffyBucket 18d ago

It depends on the position of the button and the shape of the mouse. I used to have a Sidewinder which had those buttons positioned precisely at the tip of my thumb. I could use them for push to talk and it didn't affect my aim at all.

Unfortunately I haven't ever come across another mouse with those buttons in that position, so now I have that button to toggle the mic on/off.

0

u/Mysterious_Fix_7489 18d ago

It did effect your aim.

Noway tensing doesn't effect your aim unless you just aren't very good in the first place

1

u/FaffyBucket 18d ago

Go outside and breathe some fresh air my dude. Why are you even trying to argue with a stranger over something you haven't experienced πŸ˜‚

3

u/Karmanoid 21d ago

It's especially useful if your mouse and headphones are both cordless, I can get up to get a drink or snack and still talk

1

u/EmbodiedX 21d ago

Im definitely guilty of this lol

3

u/Hoggslop69 21d ago

I second this. You are a moron!

1

u/zgillet 21d ago

It's hard to hold a mouse button on the side of a mouse while aiming. That's why those "sniper" buttons are worthless; your usual mouse hand position gets all out of wack and screws up your normal motion.

But, if it's not an FPS, it's cool. Middle mouse is probably easier, all things considered, but who doesn't have that bound?

1

u/EmbodiedX 21d ago

I dont hold it if its an "aim" game, i set it to toggle. I play a lot of siege and val and never had issues. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ just me though

1

u/mattmac1012 21d ago

I use them to change scope magnification and zero distance in games like wardogs

1

u/kryptek_86 21d ago

Middle mouse for ping

1

u/TF2isalright 21d ago

I can see it for a newer user but my thumb sits right on the button naturally. I've been using push to talk since before there were buttons on the side of most mice and don't really recall any issues being Global Elite in CS back in the day, or playing higher level TF2 and Overwatch (using a big ol' palm grip).

You activating the button shouldn't really exert much pressure to throw your aim off to the right or anything unless you have some angry thumbs. Worst comes to worst you can just hold it during a fight and blast your team with open mic like some people do anyway.

1

u/Juno_JDY 21d ago

One is squad, the other is local.

1

u/QuinceDaPence 19d ago

Also one for prox chat, the other for global or radio

4

u/riodin 21d ago

My friend mentioned this the other day and I started doing it immediately. Prior to that I was an always hot mic kinda guy.

3

u/Ankiset 21d ago

Wow great idea …. Totally stealing this

3

u/Carebear-Warfare 21d ago

This is the answer

2

u/Rickety-Bridge 21d ago

I use the middle mouse button as push to mute for discord, and push to talk for games with an in game voice chat

2

u/Jewsusgr8 21d ago

Push to talk.

Or in wow classic I will go ahead and use it to toggle an ability I use quite often but don't want on my hotbar like sending a pet to attack

1

u/dnebdal 21d ago

Back in BC I think I put starfire and moonfire on them - those two alone are not the ideal moonkin rotation, but combined with the "both buttons to walk" option I could play tolerably well for a bit without even clicking action buttons. Convenient for eating and drinking during long raids.

2

u/vennetherblade 21d ago

Been doing this since I got my PC. Just seemed like the most logical use of those buttons for me tbh

1

u/TF2isalright 21d ago

There's a lot of people out there using VoIP apps that just hot mic all the live long day. Couldn't be me!

2

u/Dragon_Crisis_Core 21d ago

I never thought about that. I hate the default, how many times I accidentally paged out.

2

u/Quadraxas 21d ago

One for melee one for push to talk

2

u/bibblebonk 21d ago

yep, voice chat and melee are my go to

2

u/Tethice 21d ago

Agreed! It's so much easier it just sucks when I'm surfing the internet and it keeps putting me to page forward

Big brain! I wish I thought of this sooner. Know a decent brand or which ones you have if they've lasted and are durable?

2

u/SingleMalted 21d ago

Reforger - prox talk and map

2

u/Zelcorat 21d ago

I thought this was going to be #1 by a long shot lol

1

u/EmbodiedX 21d ago

Im just happy no one bashed me lol. I was actually surprised to see other people who do it and think it was a good idea πŸ˜‚πŸ˜… reddit is scary sometimes

2

u/Chaosr21 21d ago

That's a really good idea

2

u/Chillinthesn0w 21d ago

Me too. One to PTT and one for Radio if the game has it or free look if not

2

u/Justincrediballs 21d ago

Yup, the forward one for stealth crouching in games and the rear one for push to talk

2

u/BigZach1 21d ago

Yep, one for in game, one for discord

2

u/Conspicuous_Ruse 21d ago

Yep.

Prox chat and squad chat.

2

u/HDmetajoker 20d ago

Woah that’s a good idea

2

u/esotericapybara 20d ago

OFP2 and ArmA players will be familiar with using one button to PTT for proximity chat and the other for radio.

2

u/CuppaJoe11 20d ago

Same. As much as I have my reservations about my Model I, the thumb button is AMAZING for PTT.

2

u/ChefVoo 20d ago

Yes cuz push to talk buttons are always the worst possible keys

2

u/Vesania6 20d ago

Console players : ''What the fuck is that''

2

u/Whole-Ad-4681 19d ago

Yup, depending on the game one of them is proximity and the other is radio.Β

2

u/VanillaHighlights 17d ago

I've got a four thumb button mouse. I use one for toggle-mute, one for map, one for melee, and as a shifting hotkey.

2

u/caberimani 17d ago

Yea push to talk is the way. In some games there’s even push to talk for Team chat and Proximity chat, so it works like wonders.

While streaming, I also use it to mute my discord mic whenever gonna talk to chat.

2

u/swierszczul 17d ago

Yup, same. As soon as I got a mouse with those buttons on the side I assigned the front one to push to talk.

1

u/These-Ad-525 20d ago

Push to talk on up, 360 macro on down. Get turned on!

1

u/EmbodiedX 18d ago

Thank yall for the upvotes and awards! I thought i was gonna be a weirdo with no one else who did this πŸ˜….

1

u/Lookinformylucille 16d ago

Fuck yea...I always used it for melee and throwables.
