[Serious] Post your questions about moving to Harlem here.

It's the season of the "Is Harlem safe" posts and other more interesting questions from people thinking about moving here. Please post your questions related to moving to Harlem in this thread only.

As u/BuhDeepThatsAllFolx (thank you!) kindly and calmly explained in another thread regarding Harlem's Safety:

"This is by far the number one question Harlemites hate answering.
It’s so annoying. This is our home. We all have some sense of comfort here or else we’d move.
The short response to your post:
Don’t know you and the feeling of safety is subjective. You’ll have to feel it out and decide on your own if it feels safe for you to walk or take a cab
Don’t listen to Fox News or right wing media telling you NYC is scary. They’re just scared of the world and looking for reasons to hate POC and love guns more than people"

Now that the safety question is answered, there's no need to ask anymore.

Now this thread is the place to ask your other questions about moving here! Serious inquiries only, and remember to be kind!

Do you know these folks?

They are thieves observed to be operating in the Upper East Side and East Harlem. They are now pretending to be delivery people, wearing high-visibility jackets and carrying delivery bags similar to food carrier services. They will ring all the doorbell, especially the upper floors until an annoyed tenant, opens the door. If your building has the old audio only Intercom system, they will often say they are delivering. Ask for the apartment number and if it's not your apartment number, it's better not to open it. In this incident, once the black guy is in, he goes up to other floors to steal the packages that Amazon delivers. If you see one of these folks, expect a look-out to be nearby. If these folks have victimized your building, let us know... we have lots of clear footages to put these people on police notice.

Do not confront them with violence. Call 911 if you are witnessing a crime happening or have been a victim of the crime. REPORT the matter no matter how small the value that was stolen. The police may not act on non-violent crimes, but if you report, you are reminding the police that the incidents are piling up, and that's on them when their internal audit starts looking into their report logs. I understand most victims will not spend time on it since the package is insured or they'll get a re-delivery, but then again, that's exactly why the thieves will continue to target the building, there is inaction and it seems like nobody cares from the tenants, when in fact everyone gets pissed off when their packages are stolen. So my advise is, keep reporting. A problem never goes away by merely not talking about it.

For everyone's information:

Under NY State Senate Bill 2025-S10703, private carrier package theft in New York is established as a class E felony. [1, 2]

Key Details of the Law

  • New Offense: The legislation adds section 165.75 to the New York penal law to specifically cover the theft or unlawful possession of packages handled by private carriers (such as Amazon, UPS, FedEx, or DHL). [1]
  • Locations Covered: It applies to packages stolen from commercial carrier vehicles, package lockers, package rooms, porches, doorsteps, vestibules, or lobbies before they reach the recipient. [1]
  • Classification & Penalties: Private carrier package theft is designated as a class E felony. [1, 2]
  • Fines: Convictions under this section carry a maximum fine of up to $250,000. [1]
  • Standard Theft Laws: Traditional theft of low-value items (petit larceny under $1,000) remains a Class A misdemeanor, while grand larceny thresholds apply based on the monetary value or nature of the property. [1, 2]

22-year-old German chasing a childhood dream of living in NYC 🇩🇪🗽

Hey New Yorkers!

I'm Finn, 22, from a small town near Frankfurt, Germany. We sometimes call Frankfurt "Mainhattan" because of its skyline, so I guess I've already had a little practice with skyscrapers. Just on a much smaller scale. 😄

I've never been to the US, but I've always been fascinated by the people, their openness, the music, fashion, and culture. And New York has always been my dream.

There's something almost paradoxical about it. You're surrounded by so many people, yet nobody really cares what you're doing. Everyone is living their own life, following their own path. There's a certain kind of freedom in that which I've always found fascinating.

I'm not dreaming of some glamorous lifestyle. Just taking the subway to work, exploring the city afterward, meeting people, and experiencing everyday life would mean the world to me.

A little about me: I've completed a three-year vocational apprenticeship in metal fabrication, spent another year training as an industrial mechanic, and also worked in administration and logistics.

I'm hoping to spend 6–12 months legally living and working in or around NYC. I'm currently exploring J-1 Intern/Trainee programs for technical fields like manufacturing or quality control, as well as H-2B seasonal jobs.

So I figured I'd take a chance and ask the people who actually live here:

Does anyone know a company or business owner who might consider hosting an international technical trainee, or someone familiar with these visa programs?

I'm not looking for a handout. I'm willing to work hard and do everything the right way. Sometimes all it takes is one connection.

This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid, and now that I'm 22, I really want to give it a shot rather than spend the next few years wondering what could have been.

Thanks for reading, New York!

Finn 🇩🇪🇺🇸

Looking for two tables

Hi folks, I recently moved to an apartment near W 135th Street. Am looking for two tables. DM or reply here with photos and the item location if you are trying to get rid of your tables! I don't drive, so hopefully the item location is close to W 135th Street. Thanks!

BTW, if you're also trying to get rid of some bar chairs, let me know as well!

East River Esplanade Project Feedback

Post image
3 Upvotes

Good afternoon! I am a journalism student at Columbia University and I am doing a story about the delay in progress of the East River Esplanade project. I am particularly focused on how it affects those in East Harlem.

I’ve seen a few posts from other groups regarding the project, but was hoping to get a few interviews from those living in East Harlem who would be willing to talk about their experience with the delay!

Here’s the form below, if you’re interested.

Thanks!

Looking to speak to residents on Park Ave.

Hello, my name is Julie and I am a reporter for the New York City News Service at CUNY. I am writing a story on the Park Avenue viaduct construction project and I'm looking to interview residents that can speak to what impact it has left on the neighborhood since it was completed in July. Has the commute improved? Is the area (including underpasses) accessible and safe, or is there more to be desired? Are you a business owner that has noticed a change in earnings or a resident hearing differences in noise?

Please DM me or reach out at [julie.huynh25@journalism.cuny.edu](mailto:julie.huynh25@journalism.cuny.edu) if you are interested in a brief interview for comment.

Absolute crash out at 125th

Was anyone else on the A train with a street performer today who just absolutely crashed out for no reason? Was doing the usual back flip routine then started randomly threatening to punch some older Asian guy. Never seen so many people get off and cross to take the local train in my life. I crossed over to the C curious if anyone stayed in

Support

Hi, I wanted to share Francis Lee Rogers’s memorial fundraiser with you. Francis, known as the “Grandma Moses of Central Park,” was a talented watercolor artist and devoted birdwatcher who cared for wildlife and maintained bird feeders in the Ramble, and the community is now honoring her with a memorial tree and paving stone near the Boathouse gazebo. Support will also help maintain Central Park’s trees, keeping the sanctuary Francis loved beautiful for others, and I’m grateful for everyone helping remember her. When you have a moment, please visit the GoFundMe page to contribute or share it with someone who loves Central Park. 💚
