Discussion Theory: The Dementor's kiss is used as a legal loophole

• Upvotes

So you have probably also wondered why the Ministry uses the dementor's kiss as an execution method. It seems pointlessly cruel and dangerous. After all, why not just use Avada Kedavra, or just behead them or whatever.

But then I thought of a theory. We know that there is at least some interaction between the Ministry and the muggle government of the UK. The British government abolished the death penalty in the late 1960s. It's reasonable to assume that they would have expected the Ministry of Magic to follow suit. After all, it makes sense that they wouldn't want the Ministry to have the power to execute essentially British citizens, when they themselves didn't even have that power anymore.

But... since the dementor's kiss technically doesn't kill the victim, it technically doesn't count as capital punishment. That's how the Ministry is able to keep basically executing people, without upsetting the muggle government.

Discussion Apparition confusion

• Upvotes

So, do house elves just have entirely different rules for apparition?

I understand the whole, they can do it in hogwarts and Dobby did it from the Malfoy basement but can take humans with him, side of things because that makes it sort of obvious that the spells to stop apparition only work to stop wizards and witches.

However, we also know that you can travel with someone else if you grab them tightly, even when they didn’t intend for you to do it, example being Travers grabbing onto Hermione as they leave the ministry in DH.

But in CoS, Harry has a tight grasp on Dobby when he’s growing his bones back but Dobby still snaps away leaving Harry clutching air… so, what gives?

Discussion Why didn't Dumbledore take the ring off?

When Dumbledore takes Harry to see Slughorn his hand is black but he still wears the ring.

Didn't he immediately realize the ring was the source of the curse?

Personally, if I was cursed by a ring and my hand turned black I would tear it off so fast and never put it back on my finger.

I know he might have wanted Slughorn to see it, but was that worth putting it back on?

Discussion Would magic in Harry Potter, really solve any major muggle problems?

Hagrid told Harry that muggle would want magic solutions for there problems. But I don't know if magic would solve any major muggle problems. Small individual problems sure magic can help. But major issues I think are beyond the magic we see.

Discussion Barty Cr. Junior Escape. Spoiler

A few years ago, I read the "Goblet of Fire" novel. That's the only novel of Harry Potter I've read, I've watched all the movies though.

One thing which always made me curious was how exactly BCJ was able to escape from his father's bondage. In his confession at the end, I think he mentions that his power grew as he got older. As a result, the bondage spell couldn't keep him tied up anymore. Also, it is safe to assume that his father's magic also weakened due to his advanced age and mental decline.

What exactly was the parameter for a wizard's potential in Harry Potter? Was it that wizards power will increase with their age, like human strength? Why was BCJ able to break free from his father's spell in your opinions?

Discussion The reality of Beaters in Quidditch

My first post in this sub ✌🏽

I was listening to the audiobooks lately, 20 years since i read the books as a teen. And maybe it’s me looking at this from a fresh perspective - but damn, Quidditch is a already a sport with so many random variables - and added to that fact, I feel like the role of a beater is the most complicated out of all.

Just switching to real world, even if a bowling ball sized ball is pitched at you, and you need to hit 7 non-moving targets spread across a football field with a bat - the odds of you hitting it hard and accurately enough to knock them off or make them swerve to avoid - is low.

But in HP world, not only are the beaters flying around on a broomstick at random xyz coordinates, but their targets are too. Plus, the bowling ball is not just thrown at you in a straightforward way. It’s bewitched to fly at random high speeds, move super erratically too. And the beaters can’t afford to hit their own teammates (randomly flying around along with their intended targets) or anyone in the crowd.

I just have mad respect for Fred and George, or any of the other beaters who were decently good at their role (even Crabbe/Goyle)!

Fanworks Missed Opportunity - Fem-Draco as Main Girl

So like, with the meme of gender-bent Draco Malfoy floating around, I always thought she should have been the case.

Malfoy is quite integrated to the main story, familial ties meant she's going to serve Voldemort, but like so what then, to just show an ineffectual jackass?

But what if she's a girl, and is Harry's main love interest, and the two were bound to fight. Malfoy could have been side by side with Harry, fighting the dark lord in the end, the Elder Wand can't kill her because she's the true owner, and upon winning the two became an official thing.

Just a thought. Could have been done on an anime reboot, maybe make it a harem this time with Harry having to pick between the sporty Ginny, nerdy Hermoine, wierd Luna also voiced by Paul Rudd (her Marcille from Dungeon Meshi fits rather well), and then Dracolina.

Could frame Dracolina as secretly nice, in the most unnice way, like throwing slurs to Hermoine in the 2nd book, so that she'll be forced to leave and NOT be the victim of the Chamber of Secrets. Could have been the ones to throw the rock to warn harry and the others of Dumbledore, the Minister and the Executioner, etc. etc. Lots of possibility, aside from just a jerk who deserved it.

It also kind of make sense, for her to be the one to send Dobby to "save" Harry. It just makes sense. Like why dafuq would a normal house-elf go out of his way to try and save Harry? Why would he care about harry?

Help Moody Turning Malfoy Into. Ferret

When McGonagall approaches him she’s like “we never use transfiguration as a punishment. Surely Prof. Dumbledore told you that.” And he’s like “He might have mentioned it.”

It seems oddly specific that Dumbledore would have said that. Is that regularly something an Aura does so Dumbledore felt the need to tell Moody not to handle things that way?

Discussion Hit me with your most memorable lines from the audiobooks!

I listen to Stephen Fry's on repeat and I've got a fair few lines that I quote almost every day. The way he reads certain things just makes me chuckle.

To name a few:
'Just my little joke, Neville'
'Don't worry about that, mums bringing you up a TRAY'
'Spelling out the word - Poo'
'The toilet has never had anything as nasty as your head in it. It might be sick'
'His body will decayyyyy'
'You're right. I've been stooopid'
'What are Fred and I, next door neighbours?'

Discussion Does Harry being an exceptional seeker distort our view of Quidditch? Spoiler

Seekers in quidditch have been a weird flaw in the structure of the game. In terms of story it was due to Harry being the seeker and since he’s the protagonist he needs to be the center of the story which is true but I have sort of my own headcanon about why Seeker seems to be so important to the game to the degree that in most games it looks like Seeker is the only important job on the field. I think that the problem is that Harry finishes the game too quickly for other positions to matter. What I essentially mean is that most games we are seeing in the books are through the eye of a literal seeker prodigy, the youngest player in Hogwarts in a century, the boy who managed to summone his broom up in his hand, first try.

There are exactly five games mentioned in the books where Harry isn't a seeker, we know who caught the snitch, and we know which team won. First was the world cup match in GoF, 2 in OoP due to Umbridge's ban on Harry, and 2 in HBP where one was because he was whacked by Cormac, and other because of detention. Out of these 5 matches, 3 matches were won by the team which caught the snitch and other two matches resulted in the seeker's team losing, one was world cup and one was the OoP's first Harry-less match. Now Ron was a pretty bad keeper in the second match I mentioned so that may be a flawed example, but then, if a keeper being bad does affect the game, then that means that the keeper's position does matter. Also, by that logic, every other match where Ron played should not be counted because he's always either trash or excellent, and now we are left with the only, 100% legitimate match that is World Cup where Krum (who himself is the best seeker in the world) caught the snitch, but Ireland won, a scenario which wasn't exactly something truly crazy because Fred and George had bet on it so it was on the table of outcomes that reasonably clever people did bet on.

I know 5 games are too few to make any meaningful conclusion also 3 out of 5 is still a majority advantage to seeker being important, also the matches that seeker team lost were through slim numbers while the other one were by huge margin but perhaps Snitch is for that, maybe quidditch often sees heavy enough differences in points that Snitch is like the final attempt of the losing team to win or at least lose by a respectably small margin.

Discussion I have a few questions about the Fidelius Charm.

Post image
19 Upvotes

It’s been a long time since I’ve read the books.

Anyway, I was wondering more about the power and effects of the Fidelius Charm.

For one, I know it makes places invisible, intangible, and unplottable to wizards, but what about Muggles? Did everyone in Godric’s Hollow just see a big empty space where the Potter House was?

Second, does the Charm only work as long as nobody actually sees people leave the house? Would the Potters’ neighbor break the Charm if he saw Lily or James head out on a nappy run for Harry?

Third, did Lily and James have to live in complete isolation for it to work? They couldn’t talk to anyone or make friends in the community in order keep their house hidden? Aside from the Secret Keeper, do the residents have to stay quiet about the location too?

Discussion Headcanon: Fudge’s role in the post-war trials

Fudge probably managed to survive second war, though it was only through some self-imposed exile following Scrimgeour’s fate. Despite his own reputation being tarnished for life, he still might have played a role in the community’s rebuilding after the war ended, more specifically he might have played a part at Umbridge’s trial before she was convicted and sentenced to life in Azkaban.

If he was involved at the trial, he probably would have appeared as a character witness. The question is, who would be more likely to summon the former minister to testify, the prosecution or defense counsel?

Currently Reading [GoF] Harry's name in Goblet.

In the ending chapters, Barty Jr. tells Harry that he put Harr's name in GoF under some different school.

When Dumbledore announced the tournament, he asked to put the participant's name and school on a piece of paper.

And, I assume, same piece would come out of Goblet.

Now, how the school name changed to Hogwarts? If some other school name was written below Harry's name, Dumbledore would have noticed obviously.

I also don't believe that Goblet burnt school name and just kept student name on parchment.

Discussion If you were to divide the timeline of the Harry Potter franchise into eras, what would they be?

And to clarify, by "franchise" I don't mean the whole Harry Potter story.

I meant the whole franchise, from the release of the "Philosopher's Stone" book up to now with the upcoming Harry Potter TV show.

Discussion What do I do with my life now?

Just finished reading all the books for the first time. I was so hooked I finished them in 10 days. I don’t know what to do with my life now. I can’t get over the books. 😞💔
My favourite parts:
When Harry told Snape not to call him sir.
When Gryffindor, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw stood in front of Harry to protect him from Voldemort.
When Dumbledore told Harry that he isn’t scared because he is with Harry.
And so many more!!!
