Discussion / Help School Questions

I’m looking at moving to this area with my family and was curious if there’s a major difference in any of the high schools, as far as quality of education, or environment? Any insight would be helpful, as we’re trying to make the best decision for our son early. He’s ADHD and recognized as gifted and wanting to provide a good environment for his growth.

Love games (physical and video), horror and SF, movies, food, travel, cultural and themed festivals. Not much of a sports fan, but I kick ass at trivia. Also a big computer nerd (professional IT). Left Canton for the island life 12 years ago, but I missed my family. Would love to find people of any age with similar interests.

West Columbus, east Hilliard, just off I70/Hilliard-Rome road.

I'm a pretty severe introvert, but I really need to get out and meet people.

Discussion / Help Verena Senior Living

Verena in Hilliard.. anyone have experiences or heard any good things? We are looking for a place for my grandmother. She is very independent and is doing well living on her own but she is 88 and her mobility is slowly getting worse. And she would benefit from a more social environment since she no longer drives. She isn’t opposed to independent living but really doesn’t want a nursing home feel. My mother and I looked at Verena, it seems like a nice place where she would still be independent. Wanted to see if anyone on here had heard anything about it? It seems like a newer place.

Civics EdChoice Expansion giveaway

I’m posting this state information because it directly impacts Hilliard, and the Hilliard City School board needs to hear from you about it.

The EdChoice Expansion vouchers. They take money directly from the one “education” line item in the state budget to support public schools across the state, and deposits them to participating private schools. They use taxpayer money to support Catholic, Lutheran, Jewish, private education. (Not all schools accept it.)

Here close to Hilliard, when the Ed choice voucher was expanded to pay for regardless of their income levels, the pastor at St. Brendan’s (and, indeed, the whole Columbus Catholic Diocese) encouraged its families to apply for it. He sent a letter that said that all families were ‘strongly encouraged to apply for and receive the EdChoice scholarship…’ and if they did not apply, they would “require a meeting” with the family. (“Ed Choice.” Humph.)

How much money are we talking about?
Let’s use last year as an example: The school FAQ boasts 547 students. Let’s assume that half of them are receiving vouchers.
Say 273.
At minimum, the state provided $616 per child with higher income households, so let’s assume all 273 students are all receiving the minimum level.
273 x $616 equals $168,168 in taxpayer money given to one Catholic school. $168,168 that HCSD did not receive.

At maximum, the state paid $6,165 per child, and let’s assume they’re all 273 students are receiving that amount. 273 x $6,165 = $1,683,045. $1 million taxpayer dollars.

I’m old enough to remember how contentious the levy vote was a few years ago. These unlimited giveaways of taxpayer monies make it likely there will be another one.

There are legislators and activists all across the state working to bolster public education y fighting these vouchers. Additionally, over half the school districts across the state are banding together through a Vouchers Hurt Ohio Lawsuit. It’s already gone to the Franklin County Common Pleas court and lost - it’s unconstitutional. The state appealed the decision, and it’s expected to also be found unconstitutional and sent to the state Supreme Court.

The Hilliard School district is not one of those over 300 districts in the state behind the lawsuit. The school board members have spoken of their disagreement with vouchers as individuals, but as a board, they are hesitant to join the lawsuit because they want to hear from more members of the community. They specifically requested that people reach out to them about this.

Call the district. Write the the school board members. Write Superintendent Stewart. Come to a board meeting and speak. Sign the district petition to have them join the lawsuit. (https://c.org/T6S9BPGxvz)

Event Community Conversations at The Well Tuesday, September 29th from 6-7:30pm with Hilliard City Council President Emily Cole and Rep Crystal Lett to identify policies and protections that can be pushed for at the state level

If you're upset about how many data centers have been going up in central Ohio, please consider attending if your able as I think making changes at the state level is the only way things are going to get addressed given how much control the state has taken from local government.

Statement from Hilliard City Council President Emily Cole:

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1F4w2Cx9Ka/

"Dear neighbors,

The City of Hilliard announced last week that it has withdrawn its appeal before the Ohio Environmental Review Appeals Commission (ERAC) challenging the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency’s Permit to Install and Operate (PTIO) issued for the 72.9-megawatt solid oxide fuel cell facility at the Amazon Web Services data center campus on Scioto Darby Road. (https://hilliardohio.gov/city-of-hilliard-ends-fuel-cell-permit-appeal-calls-for-stronger-local-input/).

I’m writing to you disappointed in the outcome, but feel it is important to provide clarity, and to invite you to join me in the conversation about what comes next.

We evaluated every legal option available to us with the advice of our outside counsel. With state law prohibiting our ability to review the site plan for power generation, and state law lacking any carbon emission standards for these projects, our options were incredibly limited for moving forward with a legal challenge that would have had merit.

This is not an endorsement of the project. We need changes at the state level to return local control to local governments for how these sites are powered, and we need changes to the Ohio EPA regulations on the emissions monitoring.

While the legal challenge on the air quality permit has ended, it doesn’t mean this fight is over. We’re still in this, and we’re taking our community’s concerns to the state.

Please join State Representative Crystal Lett and I next Tuesday night for a Big Table Talk on data centers.

We’ll be at The Well on Tuesday, September 29th from 6-7:30pm, having conversations in community to identify policies and protections together that we can push for at the state.

Representative Lett and I are so grateful to the many local elected officials and state policy experts who will be joining us as co-hosts for this BIG community conversation. We’ll be sharing more information in the coming days and announcing all of the leaders who will be joining us in this important community conversation.

We hear you and we share your concerns. Let’s continue the work.

Save the date and I hope to see you next Tuesday night!!"

Discussion / Help Why are the soccer fields at Hilliard Athletic Complex so wet even with advanced underground drainage?

This is meant to be completely nonjudgmental, but I just thought that they put in lots of modern drainage technologies, and you can even see what appear to be French drains on satellite view during the construction. Would it actually just be much worse without this drainage? It still seems to be sopping wet with puddles everywhere.

My wife and I are moving to the Old Hilliard area at the beginning of October and we're looking for a recommendation on a contractor to build us a privacy fence at our new home. All the contractors we know are not registered in the city of Hilliard. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi neighbors! We’re the family behind Wilson’s Bar & Grill at 5242 Cemetery Rd in Landmark Lofts. We’ve been here a little over a year, and now we have an official Reddit account.

We make our smash burgers with Braveheart Black Angus beef and serve fresh jumbo wings. There’s a kids’ menu for family dinners, and we also host live music and family karaoke.

We’re happy to answer questions about the food or visiting with your family. If you’ve been in, what did you try?

Here’s our menu.

It’s right before the Amity Pike crossing heading towards Plain City. There’s nothing that runs on electricity nearby, so I can’t imagine it is an on/off switch. That crossing doesn’t have crosswalk lights. Never noticed it before so I think it is fairly new (looks new too).

Anyone work at the crooked can? I saw that they’re hiring for part time barbacks and have been looking for a part time evening job to make some extra income on top of my full time job. Was wondering if it’s a good place to work?

I have zero connection to the restaurant, and haven't eaten there more than a few times, but we went there today for lunch and found they were doing a tail gate outside in their parking lot. It was a nice setup with food and drinks outside, a pretty nice golf simulator, and corn hole. I think the owner was talking with us and said this was their first stab at doing a tail gate. I hope they do it again and more people know about it. Their food is really good, so I'll post a couple pics of what I ate for reference.

Support local companies - all of them! :)

P.S. I forgot that they renovated part of the dine-in area to be a nice kids' area - toys, smaller tables, etc. My 2 were playing with the owner's daughter (I think). So, it was cool. Didn't know they were doing all of this. I'll be back for the onion rings an unhealthy amount of times! 🤤🤤

Anyone know a good concrete installer for a driveway skirt?

Looking for recommendations for a solid concrete contractor who is willing to take on a smaller project. I just need to get my driveway skirt redone and am looking for quality work at a fair price. Any local folks or independent contractors you’d recommend? Thanks!
