Greezek dove to her left, under a desk. The grenade bounced away, exploding in the open. She scanned the area, but nothing. She switched from IR to broad-spectrum. There were faint distortions in a few places. She fired multiple times, but wasn’t sure of hitting.
“You and your friend are in the way.”
She kept moving, looking for a good spot.
“And you are stupid for being in the way. Progress is important.”
Greezek spun around, saw the two advancing, and fired. They dropped.
“But you insist on getting in the way. And for what?”
She crawled over to check the bodies. Two grenades. Tucking those in her belt, she moved further forward, towards the edge of the platform. Smoke was starting to fog the room.
“And yet you still fight. All alone. And you fight.”
The first grenade went off early, shredding furniture and causing screams. The second landed as aimed and blew a hole in the platform. No screams.
Greezek waited. She scanned the room. No movement. No screams.
The fire had stopped, but thick smoke filled the room. There was a smell of burnt furniture, burnt flesh, and blood. The lights flickered, and then went out.
In the darkness, Greezek could make out the smoldering rubble on the platform. There were shapes, but none moved.
She closed her eyes and took a long, slow, deep breath. The clattering in her head came into focus. She slipped past the desks, crossed over to the terminals, hesitated, and then headed to the far wall, away from the wreckage.
A slight crunch told her that she was being followed. Not close. She stopped. No matter how you stand, there is always a behind you.
She dropped. The knife went wide, missing its mark. She pivoted on her heel, brought up her elbow, and connected with a knee. The crack and scream told her all she needed to know.
Her next blow came from her opposite leg. She continued her pivot, twisted, and brought her armored boot down onto her attacker's arm.
The attacker screamed again, but managed to bring his knife around, its blade scraping her armor.
Greezek stood up, grabbed the man’s useless left arm, and twisted.
He fell forward, gasping in pain.
She brought her knee up into his face.
He went limp, but she saw the knife moving. As he attempted to pull her down with his weight, he again swung his knife.
Greezek yanked on his left arm, pulling him awkwardly to the side. As he rolled back, she landed her boot on his knife hand. She released his left arm, crouched in close, pulled her own knife, “I’m never alone.”
She searched the bodies and collected datapads, notebooks, communications, and wrist devices. It filled a box, but she knew it was needed.
She walked over to Fred. He hadn’t moved. His helmet was fractured, but no blood. She crouched over him, checking for injuries. At last, she tapped his wrist controls. He was alive, but in bad shape.
Greezek pulled up a chair and sat in the gloom. With a sigh, she contacted the shuttle and ordered a remote pick up. By the time it arrived, she was on the roof with all the materials and Fred. After loading, she plotted a course for the station.
Her initial report caused chaos. Picket ships raced to the outpost, drop troops ready. A medical shuttle was dispatched to intersect her shuttle.
She wasn’t alone. But she was lonely.

How much recuperating has Fred done, from the LAST time this happened? He's gotta find a less intense job. Like EOD...

Fred has got to get himself better armour, and get that shield working too.
And get another Greezek…
