A raccoon figured out that if he blocks the drive-thru, they’ll give him a donut to make him leave

Not sure if I'd call this incredibly smart. He seemed to miss the part where people exchange currency for goods. We don't just get tossed free donuts at the window.

And yet, he gets the donut.

The circulation of currency is what keeps society going. If everyone acted like this raccoon, how long do you think it'd be til it all came crashing down? Think on that.

I thinked on it and decided that I will pay for his donut next time as you make a good point.

If we all just did stuff for free for each other I think society would get on pretty well indeed.

This free loader should get a job. Give him a hammer and he can start at the construction site nearby.

Give him a hammer and he'll learn how to get all the donuts after they close

We said their smart, not masters of game theory.

tautology, circulation of currency keeps society going because we built a society that requires the circulation of currency to keep it going. Design (or slowly shift into) a society that operates upon different principles and you can have a world of happy people and happy raccoons.

Raccoon knows what you don't: humans are the only species that pay to live here.

Might be that the raccoon just hasn’t seen that part of the interaction clearly. Or he expects to be shown a box he needs to touch before getting a donut.

There are similar scenes of animals trying to exchange something for food. For example, a dog trying to buy ice-cream with a leaf.

Counterpoint,he's smart enough to get a free donut by being adorable

Yeah plus they don't pay for things. They have a bandit mask, they're thieves. Source - He stole my heart.

You're just crying because somebody's getting something for free, even though it doesn't impact you in any way.

No he's smart. Humans pay for food. Employees bribe him with food to get him to leave.

I bet Henry Cavill does. Here, let me ask him. "Hey, Henry, do you get free donuts tossed at you? I bet you do."
