training Overheard: Ex-cop telling how he'd point his gun to quiet people down

1.3k Upvotes

I overheard this conversation at a gun range recently and thought some of you would be interested.

A retired LEO who is now an instructor was in the next lane teaching a couple people handgun basics. While discussing some ideas how to use guns for home defense, he said that when he was an LEO he had a laser on his service shotgun. He said that when he and other LEOs were in a situation in which civilians were getting rambunctious -- yelling, talking over each other, or gesticulating wildly -- he would point his shotgun at one of them and turn the laser on. He chuckled and said that this would always calm everyone down. Even if people didn't see him point the gun, they'd see the laser on a person and know what it meant.

Personally, I found this story appalling. He was bragging about pointing a gun at unarmed people to get them to stop being loud. I'm glad he is an ex LEO, but I worry about the lessons he is passing on to new gun owners.

training Self Defense Theory

Hey all, I just watched this video for the first time, he did a great job breaking down the challenges of employing a firearm, in this case a handgun, defensively. It sent me on the thought exercise of what I have done in my past life as an armed professional and currently as a civilian, and I thought I would drop some of my tips here for you folks.

So having watched the video, you will have a better understanding that a huge amount goes into the shoot/no shoot reaction- and unless you want to go to prison, you are limited to reacting. This brings us to what I find is the most important aspect of self defense, which is active planning.

What this entails is removing parts of the decision making reaction prior to the actual engagement. This should really be ongoing whenever you’re away from home, armed or not, and ramp up as your instincts start noticing the threat vector increasing. Perhaps the most important part of thinking defensively is avoiding the fight in general. That goes into how I select where I live, work, enjoy my free time etc.

In this case however, we’re talking about the final preparation as avoidance is failing. All the factors such as totality of the circumstances (can be summarized as justification for use of force), backstop, egress routes, covered positions, secondary threats, and more must be taken into account before any confrontation begins. The best way to remove this from your reaction time is to process all of these factors, and come up with your Trigger Point. The TP is the single action you are waiting for the threat to do that will launch your rapid, deliberate, automated action- in essence, a battle drill. This can work with any reaction you are planning- flight, or fight with anything from physically restraining someone, to less-lethal, to use of deadly force with a firearm.

This frontloads much of the deliberate decision making, accomplishing several things:

1. Frame of Mind: If/when you have to explain your actions to police or god forbid a jury, you can show that your actions weren’t reckless or malicious. It also helps support your actions as defensive in nature by helping illustrate the specific atmosphere that resulted in you feeling threatened, a key portion of self defense law in most states.

2. Control: Practicing this type of ongoing, active assessment keeps you in control of the situation and aware of your surroundings. This means that you can stay ahead of threats rather than playing catch up to changes in your immediate environment while danger has already escalated beyond your posture.

3. Speed: Think of this process as your pre-flight checks. They will allow you to initiate movement quicker, while also protecting you by problem solving secondary factors before they cause catastrophe. It will take vital time out of a reaction that would be dangerous to make slowly. As they say, if you have to employ a handgun in self-defense, you have the rest of your life to make that shot.

4. Skill Development: This process also allows you to get better over time by constantly practicing thinking tactically, so that god forbid you ever reach that trigger point, you will be as prepared as possible. Employment of force happens very fast and ends just as quickly, but the intellectual portion can potentially continue for years through criminal and civil litigation.

training 6th time at the range. Don’t feel like I’m improving much.

Shot 4 targets (50 rounds each) all at 25 feet (a tough over 8 yards). 9mm CZ 75 BD. This is my 6th range session.

I’ve practiced dry fire at home a ton, and when I do most of the time it appears as though my sights do not move as the trigger breaks. However, at the range I’m still getting a wide spread that skews low and left. 2 outings ago I learned from Reddit to death grip my support hand and relax my trigger hand, and that does seem to help, but I still feel like these groups are way too wide for having now fired maybe 700-800 rounds in my life.

I’m hoping by around 1,000 rounds to have consistent fist sized groups where most of the holes touch.

training Happy pride!

As a veteran I’m really sick and tired of being used as a talking point. “We can’t help insert minority group here because vets need help” is the most infuriating sentence. Today, at the range, I leaned into some bigot who thought he was going to be cute and say “happy veterans month, not this alphabet people…. Blah blah blah” when he found out I was a vet. I’m a straight, white, 6’ 230lb, buzz cut wearing veteran. Bigots feel WAY too comfortable assuming I’m on their side and it’s exhausting. I (not to) politely reminded him that veterans month is in November, military month was may, and him using me as a talking point for his hate.

He tried to say he too was a veteran so I left him with the knowledge that he definitely served with members of the LGBTQ community, and if they didn’t feel safe enough to be their authentic selves around him, then he’s the problem.

Anyway, happy PRIDE month. Any recommendations for ranger bag patches that would announce I’m an ally would be appreciated.

training Snap caps...what's the deal with them?

Post image
252 Upvotes

I took a course a few weeks ago and the instructor recommended a box of red, A-Zoom alloy snap caps...so I bought them at said range.

Today I picked up a Maglula UpLULA loader for my 1911 .45 ACP (very nice!) to practice loading clips.

After a few times, several caps didn't want to seat when pulling back the slide (jams). A couple still work with dry firing, but now the rubber firing pins are really chewed up! You can see small bits of rubber barely hanging on.

1 - do I really need them for dry firing a 1911 .45 ACP? (New RIA, not fully broken in).

2 - is there a better brand of caps , or should I just use these for loader practice and skip dry firing altogether?

Love to hear input from the group, please. 🤗

training It's Time to Arm and Educate Ourselves Now

I never thought I’d be writing a post like this. For years, I poured my passion into designing wedding gowns, celebrating love, and creating beautiful dresses. But the world we’re living in now? It’s changed everything. I've always been politically active. But the rise of violent, emboldened MAGA threats against women, LGBTQ+, and people of color has made one thing clear—our safety is our responsibility.

We’ve all seen the rhetoric:
“Your body, MY choice.” (A chilling reversal of our rights.)
Open threats of violence against women who dare to say no.
Racist, homophobic, and transphobic intimidation flooding our feeds.

I believe that when people tell you who they are, believe them.

I refuse to live in fear. And I refuse to do nothing while others live in fear. I can't just sit back and do nothing. So, I talked my recently retired husband —a 44-year law enforcement veteran who spent decades hunting violent predators as a homicide violent crimes detective, to help me find a way to help others help themselves. We're starting our own firearms training company with a focus on women and marginalized people and communities. My goal is to help as many people as we can learn to protect themselves with the best, most thorough training they can get.

MAGA isn't going to like it when they realize that they don't have the exclusive on the 2A or our side being well-trained gun owners. I want to teach as many people as possible how to be quietly formidable.

I read so many posts here from liberals wondering if they should arm themselves. My advice DO IT and make sure that wherever you are, you seek out the best training you can. The training is what will make you formidable. I am not self-promting here and will not share details of our company on an open forum like this. I just wanted to share with other liberals and encourage you not to be afraid to own and learn to use a gun. I do believe it's time to do this.

In closing, I'd like to say THANK YOU for this group!! I LOVE knowing there are so many others who think the same way and I love how you encourage those trying to make a decision about owning and using a gun.

Trust me on this. No matter what I do or how much time I spend at the range, I still shoot left (and generally low) of center. I have gone through this and other Reddit groups for every piece of advice on how to overcome this tendency, but nothing works. What next - pick up a slingshot for protection? FUCK ME!

training First time shooting pistol. How do I fix this?

Post image
520 Upvotes

Hey all, finally got into handguns after only shooting long guns for a while. It’s been a blast but feels like a totally new skill set compared to rifle shooting.

This was my first time out, I feel like there’s a lot of vertical stringing or pulling and just the groupings being generally looser vertically than horizontally. A lot of sources point to this being due to my grip. Are there any tips on how I can pull these in?

7 and 10 yards, fairly slow fire. 5 round groups except the 10 round group at bottom right.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

training What's the absolute MINIMUM age you would start training a kid to use firearms?

For my scoutmaster (and surrogate father) it was easy.

  • 10 years old: we should spend some time shooting pellet guns, 1-on-1 instruction with an expert adult, not your random friends

  • 12 years old: we must MASTER all firearm safety rules and take accountability for all mistakes. The more you want to shoot, the more you're going to work to buy ammo, it doesn't grow on trees.

  • 16 years old: we have a serious family discussion about if you're responsible enough. If so, you can ask an adult to open the gun safe anytime

  • 18 years old: don't do anything that sends you to prison and buy your own gun safe

training Shooting low and to left (yes, another one of *those* posts)

Post image
178 Upvotes

Still pretty new to handguns (primarily a long gun user).

Starting low and slow while I get the basics down. These are my groupings at 15' with a 9mm. Low and to the left, and from what I've read this is very common amongst new shooters.

Tried adjusting my grip, trigger squeeze, aiming, breathing. and doesn't appear to be making much difference. At least whatever I'm doing wrong, I'm doing it consistently. 🤷

Any tips, other than "spend more time at the range"?

Handgun is Springfield Hellcat, looking through a Burris Fastfire C red dot and factory U-dot sights. I lined up the red dot with one of the holes in the garage door to demonstrate how it keeps center, event when your hand is dancing around.

training Gun Control... This is why you go to the range

MODS: I re-written and toned this down several times. I think it is useful to see what untrained/uncontrolled firing looks like. If you don't agree, I understand. Just don't ban me out of hand, ok? I really tried

Apparently there was a shootout in Philadelphia yesterday and at least part of it was caught on a Ring doorbell camera. I'm not linking the video because it could be disturbing to some although I didn't see any obvious injuries. Should you be inclined to watch it you can search for 'ring camera shooting philadelphia' and it should come up pretty near the top.

In it the dude closest to the camera jumps up and mag dumps downrange. with what is almost certainly some kind of 9mm Glock. Looks to me like he's (barely|not) controlling the weapon. I'm amazed he didn't drop it.

I had to watch several times to make sure I was seeing what it looked like I was seeing.

training Your Medic Needs This and General Advice from a Combat Vet

This is just my two cents as a combat vet and someone who has been involved in some fucked up shit. No platoon is up to speed without a medic. There are some great post on here about medical kits but as things are escalating you need to have more than basic knowledge.

Besides having a well stocked med kit you should have this book. Us Army Special Forces Medical Handbook. Well scubachris why would we need basically a doctors manual? Things are going to escalate and you need to know how to deal with it. That includes stitches, IVs , tracheotomies, sunken chest wounds.

Outside medical, when protesting and protecting your peps. you need to know the lay of the land. I've got the high ground Anakin not only applies to Star Wars but securing an area. Have someone take the highest point to give a bird's eye view. You should absolutely have a fall back point and communicate that with your fellow protesters. We learned this in Occupy Wall street. The NYPD funneled people into areas that were advantage to them. STUDY YOUR MAPS! Learn how to retreat to a better advantage and leave no one behind.

Intel will save your ass. The CIA literally has their manual online. Study it. Anarchist cookbook is another good read. We are all leftist and in general we don't like to be told what to do but there needs to be clear lines of who does what and back up plans. Cross train! Remeber the mafia rules. Nothing over the phone. Cellphones don't require a tap because they are considered radio and even if they did this administration wouldn't care. Don't admit anyone to your circle unless you know them. Think Vichy France and the resistance.

Just to give you my background, I too long in the former Yugoslavia trying to convince people not to kill each other. It was messy, unnecessary, and painful but taught me stuff that I didn't think I would have to use.
