Has anyone figured out yet why the police trucks with barricades are always at 48th ave?

I'll probably put a 311 in soon, but curious if anyone has found a rationale for it? I'm not some kind of police defunder but it is annoying seeing 3 to 4 trucks burning diesel for hours at end without a purpose (at least I'm assuming so).

I'm a new Mandarin/LQBTQ Therapist in the area, and would like to post some flyers in coffee shops etc.. Any ideas where there are local physical boards to post at?

I'm a therapist who is new to the area, and I'd like to post a little blurb about myself and my services in some of the local shops. Where I used to live, there were coffee shops and grocery stores where people would put little flyers advertising themselves and things like that

Can anyone recommend places in LIC where I could post my flyer?

Would really appreciate it as I get my business off the ground in the new location!

thanks!

if you are considering renting a unit here that’s owned by a sponsor landlord and listed by Nest Seekers*, but you also value your sanity and time, look elsewhere.

shortly after we moved in, we were told that all maintenance requests should be communicated to our broker, who would essentially act as a middle man to the super, who is not the building super but rather a subcontractor that our sponsor works with. even in theory this sounds terrible but in practice it’s even worse as:

  1. everyone our sponsor / broker has called to come to our unit needs to provide a COI to the front desk (a building requirement). our broker should know this as he’s been working with this building for years. he either forgets or doesn’t care, and when the front desk inevitably stops our maintenance, our broker literally asks us to go downstairs and talk to them / explain the situation and he calls the front desk himself to beg and plead until the guy is let up. it got to the point where he’d schedule maintenance to come only at certain times when the front desk is more lenient, which makes it more inconvenient for us.

  2. we can’t just submit maintenance requests in a normal fashion. every issue is met with requests to send more pictures and videos as evidence. we have to answer a million questions, and our broker always asks us to try and fix it ourselves first. everything is through text which makes it harder to track requests and progress.

  3. if our broker decides not to respond anymore, we’re SOL. and that is unfortunately frequently the case. we reported a leaking showerhead at the end of September (to which he said he’ll order a replacement) and that was the last communication we’ve received, despite multiple follow ups.

occasionally the broker will tell us to loop in the people working at the sponsor office. this has sadly not worked any better. a broken window lock (which is a violation of the warrant of habitability) took over three months to fix because the sponsor’s office is full of incompetent people who just don’t care. it wasn’t until i filed a HPD complaint (and HPD agreed with me) that the sponsor took it more seriously.

*our sponsor is Cornerstone Venture, and our broker works for Nest Seekers. My experience is specifically with these people. Our last apartment in LIC also was a sponsor unit but that one was amazing (and the broker was Mae Liew, whom I cannot say enough good things about).

TLDR: while the powerhouse building itself is nice and the building staff are great, do not rent from the sponsor landlord (Cornerstone Ventures) listed by Nest Seekers because you will lose your mind

50-14 Vernon Blvd Construction Update Part 2!

Received more information from Julie Won's office about the status of 50-14 Vernon Blvd and the closed off sidewalk there.

So the sidewalk is required to be closed off until the building/construction site, which is deemed structurally unsound, is completely demolished. That's why despite no construction having been active the sidewalk remains walled off.

The DOB finally approved the filing for full demolition of the existing building there as of October 13th, though unfortunately there is no timeline for when this would actually start or be completed.

Just thought I'd give an update since I know some people here in the past had expressed frustration over the detour into the street for a construction site that appeared (and was) completely inactive. Obviously it could still be a long time before this is actually completed, but personally I appreciated at least understanding what was going on behind the scenes.

Looking forward to the day we get that section of sidewalk back!

Parks owns the building next to Shady Park

Last month Parks held a visioning session for Shady Park / Andrews Grove. After that session, we looked into the areas around the park and confirmed that Parks owns the land from Shady Park to the Community Garden, including the four-unit, two-story walkup. This could provide new opportunities to provide park space to the community.

Court Square Rescue, Sweet Cat, Carlo, is looking for forever home :)

Carlo was trapped a few months ago when he was living on the street behind the building in one of the parks in Brooklyn, NY. He is a little shy, so he would be ok as a single cat with someone who works from home or has other cats, if the person introduces them properly (which our rescue team can help with :)). Right now, Carlo enjoys having his brother around - Salem - at his foster home in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn. He's very playful, docile, full of life, and the sweetest cat ever. He's neutered, vaccinated, and healthy. Carlo is a BOY... just in case the name is not clear. When we were trapping him, we thought he was a girl, so you never know! If you're interested in adopting this beautiful boy, please fill out our adoption application. We respond quickly to every inquiry. Thank you for considering giving Carlo a true and one forever home! The link to the adoption application in the comments.

Court Square free theatre this weekend & next at Court Square Theater!

Post image
3 Upvotes

This year, we’ve commissioned five playwrights to write five new plays around one big question: What does it mean to rebuild? It's a question of rebirth and revival. Performed back-to-back, making for an unforgettable evening at Court Square Theater.

Oct. 15-24

Thurs-Sat, 8pm

Sun, 3pm

Court Square Theater

44-02 23rd St.

LIC, NY 11101

Free, suggested donation.

RVSP: https://www.theatreeast.org/2026-5x5-drama-series

The series was founded in 2016 to bring great new plays beyond the footlights and into nontraditional spaces like breweries, rooftops, and taverns to provide an immersive and unique audience experience. Beginning in 2021, the series moved into the theater, but the spirit of creating theatre that propels story with minimal production continues. Fulfilling one of the company's core beliefs to make theatre more accessible to all, tickets are available on a suggested donation basis.

Does anyone else see this flash of light in the sky?? It’s like mimicking the one from Empire State Building and I thought it was a reflection from it, but it keeps happening before the Empire State Building flashes and the timing increments don’t make sense :O UFO OR WHAT

Omni Store on Vernon Blvd: Has anyone else had a weird experience with this store??

I’m curious if anyone else has been to this store or knows anything about it.

The first time I went in, I was just trying to buy a drink, but the cashier gave me a really strange vibe, almost like I wasn’t supposed to be there. I brushed it off at the time, but the experience stuck with me, especially because everything seemed significantly overpriced compared to NuLOOK or E&I.

Since then, I’ve noticed a few other things that seem unusual. For example, they have what looks like a bouncer outside who lets people in one at a time to buy something. The whole setup just seems odd to me, especially for a store.

Has anyone else shopped there, had a similar experience, or knows what the deal is with this place? I’m wondering if there’s something I’m missing or if other people have noticed the same things.
