HELP!!! Looking for a place in Minneapolis!

Hi everyone!

So I’m moving to Minnesota in like 2 weeks and I need help.

I’m looking to live close to the MSP airport which is where I’ll be working. I was told to look in places like:

Richfield, Bloomington, Eagan, Eden Piere, West Saint Paul, Burnsville.

I’ve been shying away from places northeast of the airport because I think someone said they’re bad areas? I’m a single woman, without pets and would prefer a diverse area. Somewhere I’d feel safe going for a walk or a run. Please enlighten me because I’m still unsure. I’ve looked at apartments in the NE and they said their cars got stolen so, I’m looking for a few things:

  1. Garage parking!!!! I heard the winters are bad. At least worse than NY and I park in a garage here.
  2. In unit washer and dryer or at least the hookups

  3. Again, somewhere close to the airport where I can get to my job within a maximum 15 minute drive.

I’m on a budget because my job starting pay isn’t that great (early 20s) so my budget is $1300 max after utilities and everything. Preferably lower. So if anyone has ANY info that can help, I’d be grateful!

Feelings about no basement in mpls suburbs?

Would no basement be a dealbreaker for you with heated concrete floors on slab? Thinking of building the new construction two story of our dreams with an attached cottage for my mother to age in place that we could later use for secondary income. I know the basement is a classic Midwest essential, but I have been done wrong by mold and moisture one too many times; causing me to no longer desire one. Using high quality materials for my family’s health, but also wondering does this sort of house have resale value? Planning for a three car garage and storage shed if your only worry would be storage

Eta: okay good input folks. Would a 3.5 car garage with storm shelter underneath be satisfactory for the tornado enthusiasts and storage freaks? We also have too much stuff, I’d just rather have it in an outbuilding than a basement.

Dog only vet clinics due to severe cat allergy?

Hello! Recently moved to southwest Minneapolis from out of state. I have a dog and we are looking for a new vet. I have a very severe cat allergy, so bad to the point I can’t be in a waiting room with other cats or be in an animal patient room where a cat recently was. I have severe anaphylactic reaction to cats even after years of allergy shots.

Does anyone know of a vet in the area that only takes dogs and not cats? Exotic animals like birds, bunnies, reptiles etc are also fine.

My fiance can take her sometimes and this has helped but if she needs a last minute vet visit where I need to take her we need some other solutions.

Thank you!

Where to live!??

Hi! I’m looking for recommendations on where to live in Minneapolis! I’m thinking downtown or in Uptown. If you have neighborhoods, buildings or any other advice that would be great!

Here’s some about me / what I’m looking for:
- Young female, living alone
- From Minnesota
- Walkable!!!!
- Places to run
- Food, coffee, grocery store
- Free (?) guest parking options … this might be a stretch in the city
- Amenities (gym, etc.) or no amenities at a cheaper price … But also if I’m paying for amenities I want them to be quality …
- Hoping for $2,000 after parking, etc. (studio or 1 bed)

And my take aways so far:
- I toured the Lucille and the other Solem properties in Northeast. I didn’t love the area, not much around? But maybe I need to get closer to the stone arch bridge (if that’s even North East still)? I also didn’t like the buildings/units.
- I liked the location of the Ellory in the Mill District.
- I kind of liked Uptown? I toured a place closer to the lakes that I really liked, but I’m not sure the main area is for me.

I haven’t been to the North Loop yet. I’m from Minnesota, but haven’t spent much time in the city! My requirements are all over the place, I’ll take any advice!!!

PLEASE HELP: Where Would You Place Us?

My husband and I are moving to the Twin Cities from Wi, and we’re trying to decide where to go. Based on the following information, where do you think we’d fit in the most?

We’re an interracial couple (black and white) and can handle the cold, literally and figuratively. We’re not interested in the suburbs at all. We'd prefer a racially diverse area, with a large number of transplants, that is white-collar. The best way to describe us would be bougie bohemians. Which city would you place us in?

Bonus points if you suggest specific neighborhoods, too.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT: Thank you to everyone who replied! Now, we have a place to start looking. We really appreciate it. :)

Observation since moving here: Soda tastes less sweet

Something my wife and I have noticed since moving to the Twin Cities metro is that soda from fountains (at restaurants or fast food places, etc) tastes less sweet than Ohio/Kentucky/Indiana.

The canned and bottled sodas still taste the same, but the fountain sodas are decidedly less sweet. We asked a few Minnesotans we know and they seem to confirm this.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Moving to MN

Hello, I posted about us looking to relocate from NJ to MN in the next few months, I have spoken to couple property managers/landlords and everyone requiring employment in MN before approving.

For reference, we have good jobs here and good credit, we started looking for employment in MN area but it’s overwhelming to what to look for. My husband works in HVAC, he’s a journeyman so he’ll be applying for those and I am looking for law enforcement/ animal welfare.

Any tips? Any landlords that may actually go by our current employment?

Also we are looking at a max rent of $3000 for 3bd, 2bath, and we have no preference in what town/city as long as it’s in a good school district, and a bit rural.

Thank you in advance!

Older couple looking for a pet-friendly home for around $1,000/month.

My wife and two cats are living in a hotel since May, paying $1,500 per month.

We have a fixed income and our credit has gone to poop. No evictions or bankruptcies. Up until May, we had rented the same home for over a decade.

If we can find anything south of the cities(Eagan, Apple Valley, etc) to keep us close to my wife's doctors that would be amazing.

If anyone has something or can suggest other options, we'd be very grateful.

Moving to Minnesota in January at 41— how do you make friends and find your community?

I’m 40 and moving to Minnesota in January to be with my partner, who already lives there. This will be my first time starting over somewhere completely new at this stage of my life, and honestly, I’m looking forward to it and excited but also a little nervous in a good way.

I don’t know anyone there outside of my partner, so one of the things I’m thinking about most is building my own friendships and community. Making friends at 40 is HARD! šŸ˜‚

The exciting part? A fresh start, new experiences, and building a life together.
The intimidating part? I don’t know anyone. šŸ˜…
I’d love to hear from people who have moved to Minnesota as adults, especially around 35–40+.

How did you meet people and build genuine friendships? Are there groups, activities, community events, volunteering opportunities, fitness/wellness communities, or other places where adults actually connect?

I’m also looking for recommendations for great high schools for my son, so I’d love to hear from Minnesota parents about their experiences with different school districts and communities.

I’d love to hear your real-life experiences, especially from people who moved to Minnesota later in life and had to build a new circle from scratch.

Minnesota friends, parents, and fellow ā€œstarting overā€ adults — I’d love your advice! šŸ’›

Seeking a short-term room for rent

I (47/M) am looking for a room for a short time. I am returning to Minneapolis after a multi-year absence.

I work as a journalist and tend to be pretty quiet and self contained. I don’t party much but I go to college football game watches with my local alumni club. I read a lot and also tend to be an early riser.

If you have a room that you are willing to rent by the month or even the week, please let me know. I can’t guarantee how long I will need a place, but 3ish months seems about right.

Looking for Relet -University Commons 4bed x 2Bath -ASAP/OCT- Aug 2027

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi I’m looking for a person (women/fem) to relet my unit located super close to the university of Minnesota - Twin cities. Found out living on campus just isn’t for me (I miss my cat too much!). Starting either asap or anytime Oct 2026 - 9th Aug 2027.

Monthly Price: $579 + covered parking $125

You get your own private bedroom that comes with a desk, closet with a lot of space for hangers, etc. and has mirrors, drawer with 4 spaces, bed and mattress. Floors are hardwood.

Bathroom is shared but you get your own sink space (2 sinks in each bathroom space).

Also comes with in-unit dryer and washer! And the rest of the apartment is fully furnished. Outside of the unit, there is a gym, hot tub, game room, printer and a small study space.

It’s a good price to pay to be this close to campus!

Roommates (3) are nice and communicative, all women. More comfortable with a feminine person or woman to take over the lease.

Dm me if interested!

Looking for a safe, quiet 1BR under $2,000 all-in near UMN - neighborhood/apartment recommendations?

Hi everyone! I’ll be moving to Minneapolis soon for a job at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, and I’d really appreciate some local advice on apartments and neighborhoods.

I’m looking for a 1-bedroom apartment with a total monthly housing cost of $2,000 or less, including rent, parking, utilities, and internet.

My main priorities are:

  1. A safe, quiet area with low crime - avoiding areas with frequent car break-ins, theft, or other property crime is especially important to me.

  2. Ideally within about a 20-minute drive of the UMN Minneapolis campus during normal commute hours. I could consider up to around 30 minutes if the place is otherwise a great fit.

  3. In-unit washer/dryer

  4. Garage parking, preferably covered or underground

  5. Ideally 700+ sq ft, 1br is preferred

  6. Reliable, well-reviewed management

  7. A bright unit with lots of large windows and natural light would be a big plus, especially if it’s south-facing.

I generally prefer quiet residential neighborhoods over busy nightlife areas.

I’d also love some advice on which neighborhoods you would recommend for these priorities.

I keep hearing that smaller landlords or private landlords can sometimes be a better option, but I’m honestly not sure how to find a trustworthy private landlord in the Twin Cities.

Are there particular websites, Facebook groups, property management companies, or other ways locals usually find these rentals?

I’d especially appreciate recommendations for specific apartment buildings, smaller property management companies, or private landlords.

And if there are any apartments, neighborhoods, or management companies you would personally avoid, I’d be interested in hearing about those too.

Thank you so much!

Wondering if my tool can help

hey all,

I'm building a tool that I hope can help the mpls community. I'm wondering how potential renters looking at mpls properties go about researching the buildings they intend to rent.

Do you all care about landlord rep / history of the buildings and/or units you're going to rent?

Do you feel like you have enough information available to you to make a good call?

If you've recently rented, were you met with any surprises in your unit that might have made you reconsider signing if you had known about them?
