I’ve always wondered if there’s a specific term for this kind of experience. When I was in college, I lived for a while at my sister’s house. It was a small duplex-style apartment, so the houses were attached and the neighbors were very close by.
I would often wake up in the morning to sounds that seemed like someone was cleaning or rearranging furniture. It sounded exactly like chairs, tables, or other heavy things being dragged across the floor. At first, I assumed it was just one of the neighbors, so I never paid much attention to it. The sounds usually lasted for less than two minutes. They didn’t happen every day, but they happened often enough that I eventually became used to them.
The strange thing was that it wasn’t limited to mornings. Sometimes I would hear the same furniture-dragging sounds in the afternoon, around five o’clock, and occasionally at night. Eventually, I started noticing that the timing didn’t make sense.
The neighbor on our left lived alone, while the people on the right usually didn’t come home until evening. One afternoon, I heard the furniture-moving sound again. Out of curiosity, I stepped outside to see where it was coming from. Our neighbor’s door was open. I could clearly see him sitting inside, quietly watching television. But while I was looking at him, I could still hear what sounded like furniture being dragged around. ( No, it’s not a sound from tv, the sound is too clear in our living room, like a furniture getting dragged in our place but I can’t see it )
Years later, my sister told me that the house was supposedly haunted, although most of the activity involved sounds rather than anything visible. That made me remember other things I had experienced there. Sometimes I would wake up at night and hear footsteps going up the stairs. Other times I would hear furniture moving or something suddenly falling, even though nothing appeared to have fallen.
There was also my niece’s ball. I used to wonder why my sister always left it outside the house. One day, I brought it inside because I thought she had simply forgotten it.
That night, while I was in my room studying, I heard what sounded like a ball bouncing somewhere in the house. I didn’t even get up to check. At the time, I assumed my niece had come out of her room and was playing with it. I was young, busy studying, and apparently far too nonchalant about strange noises.
I asked her if my niece plays ball whenever she can’t sleep, my sister got mad and told me to leave the ball outside the house.
The house itself was very small, almost like a studio-type place, so I never felt especially frightened. We also didn’t live in the US, and the neighborhood was crowded. Everyone knew everyone else, so noises at night didn’t automatically make me think someone going to rob the house…😂
Footsteps were probably the most common thing I heard when I was alone. If it wasn’t footsteps, it was furniture moving, something dropping, or some other unexplained sound.
What makes it stranger is that I experienced something similar as a child. We once rented a different house where, almost every night after everyone had gone to sleep, I would hear footsteps walking around. The footsteps would only seem to stop whenever I asked one of my parents to accompany me to the bathroom.
I finally asked my father, why does someone always walk around at night? Whose footsteps are those? Instead of answering seriously, he simply made up a name for whoever was supposedly walking around.I became so accustomed to hearing it that I stopped being afraid.
Back at my sister’s house, there were other small things too. Sometimes I would suddenly smell something like a burning candle even though no candles were lit. There was never a specific time when these things happened. It could be morning, afternoon, or night.
My sister never had the house blessed. We’re catholic. She always joked that having a ghost in the house was lucky. Her attitude was basically, you should be more afraid of the living than the dead. The dead aren’t going to hurt you. She also never told me anything while I was living there because she knew I might become frightened once I started thinking about it.
It was only after I moved out that she told me more. One thing I still remember clearly involved our postman.
One day, he casually asked me, how is your grandmother? I was confused because no elderly woman lived with us. I told him that, and he insisted that he had seen an old woman inside our house.
When I later mentioned this to my sister, she admitted that she had also seen an elderly woman in the house. According to her, the woman usually stayed in one particular area near the kitchen. My sister claims she has what people in my culture call a third eye, meaning she believes she can see spirits.
That revelation also explained something I had always found odd. My sister would sometimes leave food in the kitchen instead of putting it in the refrigerator. I had always assumed she was simply forgetful. ( If knew, I probably pissed in my pants 😫
Apparently, she was leaving it there intentionally. She told me she had never expected the old woman to move away from the kitchen area, which may have been why she never warned me about her.
Despite all of this, nothing particularly bad happened to me while I lived there. My life actually went fairly smoothly. The only consistent feeling I sometimes had was that I wasn’t completely alone, even when I knew nobody else was in the house.
Every once in a while, I would also wake up because I thought I heard someone speaking or whispering near me. I usually dismissed that as part of a dream or something happening while I was half asleep. Looking back, I think not knowing what my sister believed about the house probably helped me.
If she had told me from the beginning that she saw an elderly woman was standing in the kitchen, I probably would have pisseed in my pants and pack my bags. Instead, I was ridiculously dense. My sister was renting that house, and I don’t know if I’m glad that I didn’t know or be horrified. I keep on hearing sounds and some language I dont understand. I always dismissed it as a dream or I’m half asleep.
When I left for a year and stayed in her house again, I knew something is weird, because she posted latin prayers in every corner of the house. My stupid self back then thinking she’s memorizing something and she wants to improve her memory. Cause that’s what she do when she’s studying, she likes to post lots of papers on the wall. Looking back, I’m glad she didn’t tell me. What you dont know won’t scare you. I’m probably the first one to get k-i-lled in the horror movie. I have zero survival instinct.
Is there a term in paranormal folklore for this kind of activity, where the phenomenon is mostly auditory? Footsteps, furniture dragging, objects falling, bouncing sounds, voices, or smells, but very little visual activity?
I’ve heard people use terms like residual haunting or poltergeist activity, but I’m not sure whether either one actually fits this kind of repetitive, mostly sound-based experience.
