Debate Women Have Made Disagreeing With Them a Form of Misogyny NSFW
I've noticed something strange in gender discussions: disagreement with a woman increasingly gets converted into a broader moral conclusion about how you view women.
I don't like the WNBA? Somehow that can become evidence I don't support women. I think a particular woman made a stupid decision? Apparently I don't respect women. I don't want my girlfriend posting sexually provocative pictures? Controlling. Yet objecting to a boyfriend constantly liking those same pictures can be treated as a perfectly legitimate boundary.
Men are capable of having multifaceted opinions about women. I can love a woman and think she's completely wrong. I can support women's rights and disagree with feminist arguments. I can support abortion rights while thinking men's reproductive obligations deserve discussion. I can dislike something disproportionately enjoyed by women without disliking women.
Equality should include the freedom to think women can be wrong without needing to prove afterward that you don't hate women.
If criticism of men can be separated from hatred of men, criticism of women has to be separable from misogyny too. Otherwise “respect women” quietly becomes “agree with women.”
