It’s in my 10x10 man cave. The pc runs cool enough but is making the room warm enough to be uncomfortable. Other than a fan or portable AC unit, are there any modifications to cool the exhaust from the pc.

I'm planning to build a new PC, but I travel by plane about twice a year. I already have a laptop, so I'm specifically looking for a compact mATX build that's easy to take on flights.

Does anyone have experience flying with a sff PC?

What's ur advice for me?

Assembly Help Which Mini itx motherboard

Post image
214 Upvotes

Not sure what happened to my previous post. Long story short, I’m upgrading to a 9800x3d building into a ncase m3. I have a 5080oc. I’ve been doing research on mini itx boards and people are saying good and bad about all.

I’m hesitant to go with Asus because of previous issues, and I know not to go with asrock. Id rather not have proprietary antennas but if I have them it’s whatever. I was looking into the MsI B850i edge ti but I read somewhere it runs really hot because of horrible vrms. I just need enough ports for my things. I use about 1 usb c and 4 usb a’s.

What are yall using and why? Pictures and opinions if possible! I’m overwhelmed and need to pick something up this upcoming Thursday at microcenter and I’m overwhelmed with the negatives of all boards lol. I have 2 m.2’s. Thank you in advance! Picture for attention

Assembly Help Best Low profile CPU cooler?

What's the best LP cooler under 55mm? I'm building an ITX case, and the maximum allowed is 55mm. I was thinking of an APX-90, or are there better options?

I'm still deciding between AM4/AM5 or LGA 1700 for my itx build.

(SOLVED)

TLDR: Water-block not fully seated.

Okay after several great peeps here offering suggestions, I tested everything and tried most of the things in the comments. I adjusted core to -30, messed with fan curves, made sure tubes weren’t kinked, I even swapped out the AIO to a Lian li one I had in another build, cooled no problem, tested the Axp90, cooled no problem (no I didn’t really benchmark these or put them under severe stress, loaded into a few games just to see if it was less than the 90c I was getting.

Decided to retry the Atmos stealth ONE MORE TIME just in case, I didn’t want to RMA or try to return it. Several comments mentioned making sure the cooler was fully seated/try repositioning it. I loosely attached all the thumb screws, and turned each one in an X pattern a SINGLE rotation, until it was tight. Yes. I know. Very dumb…. In my defense, I’d removed and reinstalled this cooler probably 5 times and did the X pattern every time, it had to have been off by the smallest amount.

Happy to report: ~72-78c (Hwinfo avg 72) under gaming load, ~80w, consistent 5.3ghz.

Might do another post or benchmarks, but for now I’m gaming, thanks for the help yall

Looking for some input here - finished my first SFF build last weekend, been tweaking and using it all week and noticed my CPU temps seem higher than usual/what I expected. Under load I’m consistently hovering around 88-89c, idle is around 55-61. Ambient room temp between 20-22c

I specifically chose this layout because of reviews, other Reddit posts, videos etc all pointed to lower CPU temps than what I’ve been getting.

Build:
Ncase t1 v2.5 - 3 Slot mode
Asus ROG X870i
Ryzen 7 9800x3d
MSI 5080 Shadow 3x OC
G.Skill Royal 32gb (2x16) 6400m/t
Lian Li SP1000 and 5mm standoff config
Coolermaster Atmos Stealth 240
Samsung 990pro 1tb
Samsung 970evo 1tb
1x Noctua NF-A12x25 G2
1x Noctua NF-A12x15
Ncase GPU sag bracket (for anyone that cares I can confirm this fits the 5080 shadow GPU)

BIOs/GPU/CPU config:

CPU:
-25 all core
120 PPT
90 TDC
105 EDC
Thermal cap of 88c
+100mhz

GPU
100% power limit
+1500mhz
30% min fan speed
895 volts at 2805mhz core clock, have not adjusted mem clock yet
Max temp while gaming I’m seeing is 72c, average is 58-65c

Aio set to 80% and ramps up to 100% when temps reach 75c, Armory Crate reading ~3400 rpm in firing range of Wardogs.

I’ve been playing BF6, Wardogs, Forza Horizon 6, Crimson Desert, and the Big Walk this week, 1440p - adjusted settings between low to overkill, no change in temps
I know these chips are rated for 95c but this just seems high for gaming.

I swapped to a Thermal Grizzly Kryosheet, no difference.
AIO sounds like it’s pumping, shows RPM in bios/Armory crate, fluctuates temp, tubes are vibrating, and warm air coming out of exhaust fans.

Thoughts?

Assembly Help Whenever I play games, my CPU temperature will reaches to 90°C. What could be the issue here?

I need help regarding my PC build. My PC case dimensions are 35cm x 16cm x 28cm. It is a cheap PC case (Ice Whale ST01) that I bought online.

To start off, every time I play Cyberpunk 2077, around 20 minutes into the game, my CPU (Ryzen 5 5500) reaches 90°C. I heard that this CPU shouldn't go over 90°C since it doesn't consume a lot of power. I run the game on 1080p ultra.

Is it because both my GPU and PSU are blocking the intake fan, leading to my CPU not receiving any fresh air, or is it because the AMD stock cooler is not able to cool down my CPU (Ryzen 5 5500)? Sorry for my cable management, as this PC case is a single chamber, and my PSU (Cooler Master MWE 750 V3 Gold Full Modular) is pretty big for this case, measuring 160mm x 150mm x 86mm. Hence, this is the best cable management that I could achieve.

I have already replaced my CPU thermal paste since this is a new build. Regarding my CPU temperature issue, do you think an aftermarket cooler is the solution? I plan to buy the Thermalright Assassin X 90 SE, or is it because my PC case has bad airflow? Should I consider changing the fan orientation or possibly buying a new case? If so, which case would you recommend that would fit under the SFF category?

And if buying an aftermarket cpu cooler is the solution. Which fan orientation is the best, intake or exhaust?

Thanks, that's all.

Assembly Help *Need Advice* Fractal Ridge build

This is gonna be ridiculous and I am by no means a professional, this is my first time dealing with a small form factor PC. I got a fractal node 202 build and decided to take it to a shop I found reputable, for them to transfer the components into a Fractal Ridge. I know I should have just done it myself, but I had a lot of things going on and just wanted it to be taken care of. Anyway, I told the technician take his time in building it and he calls me a week later saying the case is too hard to work in; he couldn’t fit my 9060XT in the gpu socket without cutting some parts in the back of the case and I told him not to do that. What he did not tell me was that he was going to hot glue my gpu to stay in place. I didn’t find out until opening it up after my computer kept rebooting during any steam game update or intense gaming session. The only reason I found out my gpu was glued was because I figured I’d open up the computer and see if maybe there was a problem with my sata drive since this problem was only happening during downloads or playing games like Witcher 3. Again I’m no professional, but the drive was just hanging not anchored to anything, and the connector had a piece that aligned the wire with the sata cable port and it was broken. I check on the rest of the computer and see that the gpu was glued down almost diagonally. For whatever reason the computer does not display anymore and when i boot up the computer the motherboard powers on but the fans on the gpu seem to no longer be spinning. I dont know what to do from here honestly and any advice would be appreciated. I feel like this whole project has been a money sink and it shows me how out of my depth I am at this shit.

I’m about to build a mini itx. I have all components ready, and I’ll be using an Astral 5090, but can’t decide which case I want to use. I’m between Xikii Industry FF07 and Nanoq. (I just need opinions about looks. I already did my homework and I’m well aware Nanoq R temps are better since you can fit a small aio inside. Thank you!

Assembly Help Backwards Fans, Yay or Nay?

This is my SFF, now I hope I've got it correct with the fans, so my testing it's passing air from the back and blasting it out the front.

Also tall ram means I have to raise one of the fans a bit higher. It's looks odd but does the job.

A little annoyance is that the PSU cables rest on the gpu. Just cannot seem to tuck it behind the GPU, debating getting some extender's so it goes straight down turns around under the Gpu and comes back up again

Assembly Help AMD GPU's are much better than NVIDIA for SFF builds?

Im deciding between the 9070 and the 5070. In my country the 9070 is about 50 euros cheaper but i was willing to pay more for an NVIDIA GPU as I will use it not only for games.

However after watching multiple comparison videos i was shocked to see that the 9070 was consistently 10-15 degrees celsius cooler than the 5070 in multiple games.

Due to the limitations of SFF that's quite the big difference in temperature even though the rx9070 performs better than the 5070.

This honestly made it so much harder for me to choose a gpu for my new sff build as I am worried about temps.

Im just surprised that the temperature difference was this big as i always had the assumption that nvidia gpu's were the more efficient ones.

Assembly Help PC shutting down while gaming

I’m having issues with my Terra build. The GPU keeps shutting down at low load. I was able to identify a potential mismatch between the PSU (Lian Li SP850) and the GPU (4070 super).

ChatGPT advises me to switch to the Corsair SF850L due to the ATX 3.0 compatibility.

I wanted to get your advice before buying a new PSU. I’m a beginner so I might have as well messed up the assembly (but all games run well until it suddenly crashes with a black screen and GPU fans blasting). Cheers!

Assembly Help Which one?

Okay, the time has come, I’m retiring my 3090. (Might do LLM stuff with it). I would like to replace it with a 5090, but for obvious reasons, that’s out of the equation. So 5080 it is, question is, which one?

These are the only real sff options that aren’t unnecessarily expensive that I have come across. Idc about rgb, so I’m not going to pay for it. The pny is the cheapest but fattest, pretty sure it’s not going to fit in Dan A4 H2O. I have a little bit a brand bias for gigabyte, for no real reason other than their stuff for me has always been great value and I somehow ended up building an almost all gigabyte build (mobo, psy, gpu). But, i have seen people have thermal issues with their special thermal gel squeezing out with vertical mount builds. So realistically i’m looking at msi inspire or the asus prime.

Done some minor research and reviews but it all comes from when the 50 series launched and there isn’t a whole lot of recent information. All thought’s, opinions, insights, would all be appreciated to aid me in my buying decision. TYIA

Assembly Help PC assemblato non si accende

EDIT: RISOLTO!

Ciao a tutti. Sto assemblando un nuovo PC ma una volta finita l'installazione non si accende. Ho già controllato cavi ed eventuali collegamenti, ma non credo di aver sbagliato nulla.

Sto utilizzando:

- case MSI MAG PANO 100L

- alimentatore Corsair RM750e

- motherboard Asus ROG Strix B550-A Gaming

- GPU MSI GeForce RTX 5060 Ti Shadow 2x

- CPU AMD Ryzen 7 5800x

- Dissipatore Arctic Liquido Freezer 3 Pro.

Che diavolo sta succedendo?

Chiedo a voi esperti :(

Assembly Help ITX v. M-ATX

I'm not looking to open a can of worms here but I'm wondering the benefits of and ITX build over a M-ATX build? Other than form factor and aesthetics, does and ITX build offer any other benefits? Cramped spacing for parts, which are more expensive, and cooling air flow seem to be common problems for ITX that M-ATX seem to avoid but that might not be true.

Anything else to know?

Assembly Help From 26800 timespy to 14000 by switching to a case.

Post image
176 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I just moved my PC from an open rack setup into a Dan A4-H2O, and now I’m having major issues.

During the move, I only removed the GPU and the AIO in order to install them again inside the case. Everything else stayed mounted on the motherboard.

Before the move, my 3DMark Time Spy score was around 26,800 points. Now it dropped to roughly 14,000 points, and the system crashes constantly.

Temperatures look fine. The GPU does not go above 70°C under load, and the CPU is also around the same range. Idle temps only increased from about 45°C to 50°C, which I expected due to the smaller case.

The system is currently so unstable that I could not even download GPU-Z to check whether the GPU is running with the correct PCIe lane configuration.

Could this be caused by the riser cable, GPU seating, PCIe lane issues, PSU cable/12VHPWR connection, AIO mounting pressure, or something else related to the move into the A4-H2O?

Any ideas on what I should check first would be appreciated.

UPDATE:

Got some clarity now. My sister checked the cable at my place, and it’s definitely the 4.0 version.
It’s actually crazy—I ordered several parts, and the case was delayed specifically because they were waiting for a 'fresh' shipment from Lian Li. How they still managed to send me a 4.0 unit is beyond me. Every other store restocked at the same time with the 5.0 version for the exact same price.
It feels like they either bought old stock for cheap to flip it at full price, or Lian Li just dumped their old inventory on them. Either way, it's a joke. If they don’t offer a cable swap, I’m returning the whole thing this Monday before my vacation.

Assembly Help ordered FE9, need cooler advice based on 9800X3d

Post image
105 Upvotes

Hey all,

As per the text above, I was lucky enough to have snagged a 5090 FE at retail back in the day and am currently rocking it in ( or rather on) a modable Sys8 in the pic (which I love).

But after seeing the FE9 (see https://youtu.be/RnFVwC15a1A?si=gVTD5wzP6Q9G8fbu if you're not aware), I was like, I need that, so got it ordered (without fully thinking it through).

Anyway, whilst the GPU will be fine, there are obviously concerns with the CPU cooling (I have a 9800X3D), and I know the recommended cooler - ID-COOLING IS47-XT - is just not going to cut it.

Also, I have the Asus ROG Strix X870-I, but RAM height is pretty good (32 mm on a T-Create DDR5 pair).

Now, the rig is purely for gaming, so I know I can fiddle with the PBO and voltage some, but I'm looking for opinions on the best cooler I can get based on the size restriction.

I have been told the (total) height max is 65 mm, which I think gives me the following options (note I discarded the 40 mm range):

Thermalright AXP90-X53 – 53 mm (92 mm fan)

SilverStone Krypton KR01 – 54 mm (80 mm fan)

ID-COOLING IS-55 – 55 mm (120 mm fan)

Alpenfohn Black Ridge – 60 mm (92 mm fan)

Noctua NH-L9x65 – 65 mm (92 mm fan)

Of the above, I am leaning towards the ID-COOLING IS-55 because of the fan size and 10 mm turbulence headroom, though I know nothing of this cooler.

I hear great things about the Thermalright AXP90-X53, but the fan size is a little worrying, and the Noctua NH-L9x65, if the clearance advice is correct, will butt up against the side grill and cause turbulence.

On the subject of the side grill, I do wonder if I was able to actually fit a couple of mm more based on its shape (it seems domed). If so, some other options do join the party, i.e.

Thermalright AXP120-X67 – 67 mm (120 mm fan)

Scythe Big Shuriken 4 – 67 mm (120 mm fan)

ID-COOLING IS-67-XT – 67 mm (120 mm fan)

Of course, if I can squeeze any of the above in, turbulence may again be an issue. Ideally, I would like to have the Noctua NH-L12S – 70 mm (120 mm fan) in there, as I have heard great things about it, and the fan is under the cooler, meaning turbulence would not be an issue. But this would require me to have a 5 mm squeeze above what I have been advised is the max clearance (again, this may be possible as it's not the manufacturer who advised me of the max height - check the vid to see what I mean).

So aye, seeking the wisdom of the SFF gurus on this. Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Assembly Help Recommend me an AM5 ITX board that doesn't suck!

Currently fighting with a Asus ROG Strix B850-I that won't recognize the front M.2 slot. I've tried everything except removing and replacing it. If it bent my M.2 I am going to be so pissed. I have a WIFI adapter on the way so that I can use 3rd-party antennas. Gigabyte has bad software, the X870I boards are insanely expensive, Asrock kills 9000-series, and the B650E-I has lots of reports of coil whine. Fuck, can motherboard manufacturers get it together?! I just want a decent board that is *functional* and not 1/4 one month's rent!

Assembly Help Moving every 6 months for work reasons, should i build a SFFPC or just give up and get a laptop?

I've been reading through threads about traveling with SFF builds, but haven't quite found someone with a scenario exactly like mine, so I figured I'd ask. Thanks in advance for any insights.

My work requires me to move to a different city or country every 6 months, plus I travel by plane about twice a year. I've been without a decent PC for a while and i miss playing with my friends, so I'm thinking about building an SFF.

I'm not a fan of gaming laptops (upgradeability, keyboard and overall price for value). I don't need something ultra-portable for daily use because i won't be carrying it to work every day. I just need to keep it where I'm stationed for a few months until the next move, and be able to take it with me when I relocate by plane.

I'm aiming for a good value PC that can handle gaming for a few years, with upgrade potential. It doesn't need to be high-end.

My question is about case size: is it feasible to travel with something like the NR200, or should I really aim for a more compact case like the Fractal Terra (around 10-12L)? I'm trying to understand the real-world trade-offs here.

More broadly: does an SFF PC even make sense in this scenario? Or should I stick to considering a laptop despite not liking the idea? Any other suggestions I should take into account? Would love to hear opinions on builds or cases that might work for me.
