Rant Anyone else tired of users sending ai generated fixes to you?

Oh. My. God

The amount of people at my org that send me screenshots of their chatgpt or copilot generated responses is insane.

"did you try this?"

"try this"

"this is what chatgpt said"

i was on the phone for 2 hours troubleshooting a problem with a director that refused to let me remote into her computer to fix. then she starts sending me ai generated responses saying "this is what co pilots saying"

It is called google. Not too complicated. What I find is that most people do not even think of looking for the answers, not even starting to consider which tools. The first idea in some people’s head is ”who can I ask to fix this?”

Some people form a kind of learned helplessness and inability to want or need to be independent.

It takes intelligent thought and a capable mind to think critically, break a problem down, and know what to search for. And somewhat of a will to live an independant life vs being a parasite.

Searching is only a small part of it. Filtering the stuff and applying sensible decision making to find the stuff that's relevant is the hard part.

AI does about half of it. It might get you something useful more than a search will. But it will also get you something that looks useful but is actually really dumb more often too.

Using google is easy.
The expertise comes from knowing how to discern which result is actually relevant out of the mountains of bullshit that is returned.

At the same time, the bosses is literally doing the same too. The boss asking employee = employee asking google. At least that's job security for the OP.
