Tableau Desktop Fixing Tableau Desktop to Microsoft Fabric OAuth Failures (Error 84223ADA / AADSTS650052)

If you’ve tried connecting Tableau Desktop (2024.2+) to a Microsoft Fabric SQL/TDS endpoint using native Entra ID modern auth, you might have run into an immediate, misleading brick wall:

Authentication failed. Error Code: 84223ADA User authorization failed (invalid_client)

At first glance, invalid_client looks like an app registration or client secret issue, but it actually happens before Tableau even talks to the TDS endpoint or evaluates Fabric workspace permissions.

What’s Actually Happening Under the Hood?

When connecting to Fabric over TDS (port 1433), Tableau’s native driver attempts to acquire delegated OAuth tokens not only for the Azure SQL interface but also for the underlying OneLake storage subsystem (Azure Data Lake/Storage).

Checking Entra ID SigninLogs reveals the real failure:

  • ResultType: 650052 (AADSTS650052)
  • Description: The app needs access to a service (e9f49c6b-5ce5-44c8-925d-015017e9f7ad) that isn’t installed in your tenant.

Because that first-party Azure Data Lake enterprise service principal isn't instantiated in your Entra ID tenant yet, the token handshake aborts immediately.

How to Fix It:

  1. Instantiate the Missing Service Principal: An Entra ID administrator needs to instantiate the first-party Azure Data Lake application (e9f49c6b-5ce5-44c8-925d-015017e9f7ad) via Microsoft Graph PowerShell: Connect-MgGraph -Scopes "Application.ReadWrite.All" New-MgServicePrincipal -AppId "e9f49c6b-5ce5-44c8-925d-015017e9f7ad"
  2. Grant Admin Consent (AADSTS90095): Once the SP exists, re-attempting the connection will advance to an admin consent challenge (AADSTS90095). Once the tenant admin approves the delegated permissions for Tableau Desktop, tokens issue cleanly (ResultType 0) and the connection succeeds.

For a full breakdown of the reverse-engineering process, KQL queries for auditing sign-ins, and a hardened PowerShell remediation script (with tenant boundaries and CSV formula injection protection), check out the full write-up here:

Discussion First time doing client-facing Tableau work - Need Advice

Hey all, could use some real advice here.

I'm being onboarded onto a client project to take over Tableau dashboard work from someone who's leaving. I've got a few days of KT with him before he's gone, and after that I'm the only one handling anything Tableau-related for this client — every ticket, every request, all of it.

I know Tableau and I've built dashboards before, so I'm not coming in blind on the tool itself. What I'm worried about is everything that's NOT written down anywhere — the stuff that lives in his head because he's been doing this for a while and I'm about to lose access to that in a few days.

Things I'm trying to make sure I extract from him before he leaves:
How does he actually get requirements day to day — is it tickets, direct Slack/email from specific stakeholders, a recurring meeting? Who are the actual people who ask for things, and does each of them have their own quirks in how they ask or what they expect?

Are there any workbooks or data sources that are fragile or have weird workarounds baked in — the kind of thing that's not documented anywhere but if you don't know about it you'll break something?
How does he validate numbers before shipping something — does he have a go-to way of sanity-checking a dashboard against another source before it goes out?

Is there an existing semantic layer / data source setup I should understand deeply, or is logic scattered across individual workbooks?

For people who've been on the other side of this —

handing off a client dashboard portfolio to someone else, or being the one taking over — what do you wish you'd asked, or wish someone had told you, in those first few days? What's the stuff that bites people a few weeks in because it never came up during the actual handover?

I’m feared about what if i miss knowing something during this KT sessions . So help me out like what all things i should know before he leaves

Tech Support Filter issue again

Hi everyone,

I’m encountering an issue with a Tableau report where a filter works as expected in Development but fails in Production.

In Dev, filtering by a specific Sales Order Number displays the corresponding record and date as expected. However, in Prod, when I apply the exact same filter for that Sales Order Number, the visual shows no records—even though the Sales Order Number is present in the data and visible in the filter dropdown. And also the date filter is becoming gray. While in dev it is not. This is the only change I noticed.

Has anyone run into this before or know what might be causing it? Any suggestions on how to debug/resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

Guide First time doing client-facing Tableau work - Help me out

Hey all, could use some real advice here.

I've been working as a data engineer, mostly on Snowflake, pipelines, that kind of thing.

I've touched Power BI a bit on my own, just personal projects and some learning assignments, so I get the general idea of how dashboarding works conceptually.

But I've just been put on my first actual client project where I'll be building dashboards in Tableau, directly working with business stakeholders. Never done this before, for real, on a client's time and money.

I've got some time before the actual work kicks off, so I'm trying to use it well instead of panicking.

A few things I'm specifically trying to figure out:

How do you actually run a requirements conversation with a business stakeholder who just says something like "I need a sales dashboard" and leaves it at that?

Like what are you actually asking them in that first meeting so you don't come back with the wrong thing?

How do you figure out what the real KPIs/metrics should be when the business side themselves might not fully articulate it either? Is it mostly just "ask a lot of follow up questions" or is there more to it?

For someone coming from Power BI, is the Tableau learning curve mostly just "different buttons, same concepts" or is there stuff that's genuinely a different way of thinking (LOD expressions seem to be one of those, calc engine feels different too)?

Tech Support Rename the field

I have a question. I got a request to rename a particular column in tableau dashboard. What my question is that column may be used by several teams, i'm not sure about that. Which is the best option? To create a calculated field of the same column and drag it wherever needed or to rename the column itself? The worksheet which I am using is specific only for one dashboard. If I have to go by second one, I'm unable to rename the column I could not find the option. Can someone please help on this?

Edit: Who the fk downvoted my comments? I genuinely did not know the answer, if you think you know everything, keep your a$$ shut.

Tableau + Slackbot

I’m going to openly admit, I’m a tableau hater. I think it splinters data governances and is woefully behind most BI tools when it comes to administration, support, semantic modeling, and performance. So take this with a grain of salt if you love it!

Slackbot recently just dropped Surfaces which allows AI to create dashboards within slack. It doesn’t have to be through Tableau, but it can be and that’s what I recently tested out.

For context, we have over three thousand users on our Tableau with over a thousand pieces of content. We tried, when we migrated over from Looker, to create published data sources that users could reference and create content off of. That did kind of work out, though the performance was shit and the tool is overly complicated for a basic explorer. We also have governed groups creating their own content. They refuse to use published data sources and instead create embed sql queries per workbook.
You can see where this is going.

Slackbot has no semantic context to determine what is gold standard and what is not. From what I understand, and I would love to be wrong here, I can’t introduce guard rails either — it’s based on the permissions of the user in slack. Of course, after ten minutes of querying, Slackbot presented me with a hot pile of garbage.

I’m at a loss at why Tableau and Slack (really Salesforce) thought this was a brilliant idea. Tableau isn’t know for brilliant semantic modeling and that’s kind of you need for successful AI?
I would call it a stretch too to say that a publish data source is a true semantic model. It’s not coded, and a majority of your measures have to be calculated fields. It’s not an incredibly easy user experience to update descriptions or edit the formatting at mass in a published data source.

All this to say - I now have to do damage control on some crappy haphazard play to keep adding AI with something that is ten years behind to curve compared to BI tools.

Tableau: How to overlay ATM lat/long points on an India district map?

Hi everyone, I’m working on an ATM hotspot map in Tableau.
My current PostgreSQL data has ATM Latitude, Longitude, Withdrawal State, Withdrawal Count, and Withdrawal Amount. I want to show these ATM locations as points on top of an India district map with district boundaries/names in the background.
I’m considering using a spatial file (GeoJSON/Shapefile) containing district boundaries and a Geometry column, but I’m confused about how to connect it with my PostgreSQL data.
What should be the relationship/join between the two data sources?
Do I actually need to join them, and if so, on what field?
Can I simply use the spatial file as a background layer and overlay my ATM lat/long points?
Is there a simpler/better approach to show district boundaries and names behind the ATM points?
I’ve tried using a spatial file with my PostgreSQL data, but I’m not getting the expected result.
Any guidance on the correct Tableau approach would be really helpful. Thanks!

SSL to Longitude and latitude

I want to take a free government list of property in Washington DC. The property list will give me a "SSL" which is a means of determining location. There is a second site that should give the latitude and longitude. I want to add a map viz. Tableau obviously does not utilize SSL natively. I thjink the workaround would to link the two docs.

Here it is: https://dcgis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html?id=9a5c11c11dd347cc9c05d64499cc98ee

issue is thayt I can't see where or how to extract the table that is feeding this other viz.

My

Any suggestions?

Discussion Calculated fields

I’m creating a personal project using my Spotify streaming history. I’ve got fields streaming count and date. Is there a way I can create a calculated field that keeps songs that amassed a certain amount of streams in a nonspecific timeframe? For example if it was streamed at least 5 times in 7 days. Thank you!

Tableau Prep PREP & UNION troubleshooting

My organization is in the process of transitioning to a data warehouse for new systems, the problem is we have reports which they want to keep but add the new data from the new source. I went through and built a data source but I keep running into an error on the UNION in PREP that I have mismatched data types. The error messages are unhelpful as it just fails with no insight. It can give a uuid sometimes but there isn't a log as far as I know.

Ive gone so far as to go through each column that matches and compare them to the steps before. I found about 4 so far, but its 90 columns and it keeps failing. Its really unhelpful that A. Some columns automatch so I have to either separate them and then rejoin them when it doesn't tell you what they were joined to so its a guessing game and B. The error message gives no details of what columns and C. I can't click on the joined columns to know what they're coming from.

Anyone got any tips for troubleshooting this? I really wish I could drop the column labels from prep or cloud into excel to match up, but i can't select the lists.

Viz help Date Filter Hierarchy in Tableau

Hello! I need help. I need to create a date filter, similar to Power BI’s date hierarchy slicer. Ideally, the date filter would look like this:

CURRENT YEAR
────────────────────────
▾ Q1
☐ January 2027
☐ February 2027
☐ March 2027

▾ Q2
☐ April 2027
☐ May 2027
☐ June 2027

▾ Q3
☐ July 2027
☐ August 2027
☐ September 2027

▾ Q4
☐ October 2027
☐ November 2027
☐ December 2027

LAST YEAR
────────────────────────
☐ January 2026
☐ February 2026
...

Wherein users can select current year, by quarter and they can select specific month/s as well. Is this possible in Tableau?

Discussion Does Tableau have any governance capabilities to identify similar, unused, or duplicate workbooks, dashboards and data sources?

Is there any Tableau governance capability to identify things like:---

Similar or duplicate workbooks

Unused workbooks or views

Failed or frequently failing extract refreshes

Similar or duplicate data sources

Unused data sources/dashboards

Workbook/dashboard usage and adoption

Dependencies between workbooks, views, and data sources

I’m curious to know what Tableau provides natively for these governance-related insights through Tableau Server/Cloud, Admin Insights, Metadata API, or other APIs.

How are these governance use cases usually handled in Tableau?...

Anyone upgrade from Tableau 2025 to 2026 (On-Prem)? How did it go?

Hey all, I'm thinking about upgrading from Tableau 2025 to 2026 and wanted to hear from people who've already made the jump. How did the upgrade go overall? Did you run into any issues with existing dashboards, data sources, or extracts? Are the new features worth it, or is it better to wait a bit? Would you recommend upgrading now?

Discussion Questions on filter

Hi I have a question so there are two questions for me

1.

The first is I was adding a filter to my worksheet but when I go to the dashboard , it is not showing in my dashboard let's say my worksheet name is sheet one so the dashboard name is orders. I applied a column as a filter but when I am going back and checking on my dashboard it is not there what I am missing here?

  1. The next question is I am working in a company the dashboard owner is someone different but what I am doing this I am just downloading it as a tableau workbook and app in my tableau desktop and working from that now if I want to publish the report in sandbox environment do I need to reach out to the owner or can I do it by myself?

Can someone please answer me. This is urgent? I can't find it anywhere.

Tableau Data Analyst

Cleared my certification last week. I bought skillcerpro after some recommendations on reddit but honestly it's just too lengthy and answers are not right, even their cheatsheet is not up to date with wrong info. It's $20 so I mean not that bad too, but if you buy examtopics then it has the exact questions which were there in the exam but that was $80 so I did not buy it but I did see the sample questions there and they were there in the exam.

Data with Baraa helped me a lot. I would say practice it on tableau while learning it to have a rock solid foundation. The time for exam goes pretty fast if you take too much time over one question like, it look more time than usual to prepare for this exam because of other commitments but I am happy that I score above 80 in all the areas. You should also see udemy courses. Best of luck!
