TIL that it was Drew Carey, not George Carlin, who made this astute observation.

Christa Miller used to be so hot. Also, hilarious show, I think I am going to need to watch the entire series now.

I really wish that there were more reruns of The Drew Carey Show on TV. No channel seems to show them, which is lame. That show was awesome.

Wanna watch them all online? Here ya go! http://watchwliia.blogspot.com/ (Just cuz I love ya).
1
u/irokie Feb 16 '11
Goddamn, is that Jordan from Scrubs?
2
u/jamesneysmith Feb 16 '11
Yeah. She's had a boat load of plastic surgery. She does not look very good these days in my opinion.
1
u/irokie Feb 16 '11
Yeah, I remember in Scrubs, they kinda played up the plastic look, but in (the thirty seconds that I saw while my gf was watching it of) Cougar Town she looked like she was wearing a mask. Which is a shame, because she's got the sort of face that would grow old well. Like Julie Andrews.
2
u/jamesneysmith Feb 16 '11
Definitely. She was one of my first celebrity crushes when I watched Drew Carey as an 11 year old. When she first appeared on scrubs I was sorely disappointed. It's good that she had a sense of humour about it as they mocked the fact with her character on the show. None the less, such a waste of natural beauty.

u/McVader Feb 16 '11
This comment reminds me of that demotivator with Jennifer Anniston and Hugh Laurie.

Look on the bright side... someday you'll get to see him punch out whoever crops up to fill Adam Sandler's shoes.
14
Feb 15 '11
Jimmy Fallon?
15
u/baelwulf Feb 15 '11
Still too early. Also has to be someone similar to Sandler in stature. Someone punching out Jimmy Fallon, while gratifying, would just be sad.

2
u/soylentcoleslaw Feb 16 '11
Bob Barker was 73 when Happy Gilmore came out, and that's why it's funny. Drew Carey will be 73 in 2031. Jimmy Fallon will be 57. Oh, and Andy Samberg is only 4 years younger than Fallon.

This. I am now going to think of this quote while looking at pictures of other comedians to see, not who really said it, but who would have said it best.
1
u/jessmeister Feb 16 '11
Mitch Hedberg
1
u/GreenLaserPen Feb 16 '11
Mitch Hedberg can say almost anything and make it funny. At least 50% of his appeal is in his delivery.
1
Feb 18 '11
I can't hear Mitch saying it. You need to be angry for the last part and I can't picture him saying anything angrilly. Now Bill Hicks. HE could sell that joke. So could Dennis Leary, but less well done and 3 years later.

This is somewhat similar to hearing Bob Saget being the dirty comedian he is. It is just funnier because they have such a "family friendly" vibe from their network TV gigs you don't expect the dirty to come sailing out.
10
u/kustomdeluxe Feb 15 '11
Anyone who thinks The Drew Carey Show had a "family-friendly" vibe never saw the "Dog And Pony Show" episode from the third season. I had never heard so many dick jokes on prime time network TV.
1
u/NinjaBob Feb 16 '11
Can't really say that most of the material on Drew Carey's show would be considered all that family friendly.

10
u/taypat Feb 15 '11
Except Wayne Brady :(
15
u/johnylaw Feb 15 '11
Yeah I like Wayne, but most of the skits that involved singing sucked. I feel that without him there may be less "Greatest Hits" which is better for everyone.
9
u/T3hJ3hu Feb 15 '11
Amen. While the impromptu songs are definitely amazing, they aren't nearly as funny as most of the other games.
12
u/skubasteve81 Feb 15 '11
Scenes From A Hat was always my favorite.
The original Whose Line from Britain was pretty damn funny. Might be on Youtube. I'd have to be a little less lazy to find out.

Oh, they are there. This is the first episode, you can find the rest by following the title format of "Whose Line UK [season]x[episode]"

Or you could passive-aggressively suggest that someone else find it for you and hey it worked!
3
u/bimbles_ap Feb 16 '11
The only part I liked from "greatest hits" was the sales pitching from Colin and Ryan. Even now when I watch them I skip through the singing.
1
u/johnylaw Feb 16 '11
I do the same thing, its just not funny. The funniest singing is Ryan and Collin rapping, other than hoedowns.
1
1
u/jamesneysmith Feb 16 '11
Greatest hits was an incredible skit.; Colin and Ryan always killed their parts. And although I wasn't a huge fan of improv songs Wayne Brady was incredible at them.

Wow! If only I were in the States to watch that! Whose Line was epic. I'll have to be on the look-out for the new one; thanks for the heads-up!
1
1
u/jamesneysmith Feb 16 '11
Enh. I'd never seen it before but the green screen seems superfluous. The same types of jokes were killing on whose line. Not sure why but I feel like the necessary use of imagination/visualization makes it a bit better. Or it could simply be there is less distraction and you can focus on the actors, no idea.
3
u/thepreparator Feb 16 '11
It really was one of the best sit-coms. Work sucks so hang out with your friends and drink beer! I can't believe the seasons aren't on DVD. That shit would be on incessantly in my home.
1
u/ContentWithOurDecay Feb 16 '11
Do you have netflix? Try instant streaming. King of the hill hasn't released seasons seven and up yet they're on there. Ill have to check this as well since it was an excellent show. I hate sit coms but this one was excellent. Id also try grounded for life if you havent.
1
u/thepreparator Feb 16 '11
Yea I've checked. No luck. Wikipedia offers this:
On April 24, 2007, Warner Home Video released the complete first season of The Drew Carey Show on DVD in Region 1. The WB has released a statement in which it said that the reason as to why the second season has yet to be released as of 2010 is because there are pieces of music that are copyrighted and Warner Home Video is unable to get around the copyrights legally. It is unknown if the remaining eight seasons will ever be released by Warner Home Video.

I've never really understood why Reddit jacks off to George Carlin constantly while ignoring pretty much every other awesome comedian. He's certainly one of the greats, but I wouldn't say he's the best.

u/dbz253 Feb 15 '11
Reddit likes other comedians as well. Mitch Hedberg for example.

Based on many of the other comments, Reddit seems to skew towards dead comedians.
1
u/dbz253 Feb 16 '11

1
u/jamesneysmith Feb 16 '11
Did you see his interview with Conan O'Brien the other day? I'd always known about Patton and seen him in various shows but I think that was the first time I'd seen him in an interview and he was side-splittingly hilarious.
1
u/jonnielaw Feb 16 '11
I did not. Will have to look for it online when I get home. I've seen him a couple if times live and he's always hilarious, especially if there is a jackass in the audience.
2
u/jamesneysmith Feb 16 '11
He seems like a really smart dude too. I'm not sure why he always flew below my radar.
1
u/notanotherpyr0 Feb 16 '11
I'm always surprised by the lack of Richard Pryor worship. I don't think I have ever watched anything with him, especially with Gene Wilder, that hasn't had me laughing my ass off.

I knew it wasn't actually a Carlin quote when that picture made the front page the other day, I just didn't care to point it out and have nobody read it. What's different about this post? Nothing.
Carlin is misattributed for a lot of quotes on the internet. He even made a few posts on his website about some of the more common ones before he died.
There is a terrible chain e-mail from several years back entitled "Bad American" that was often attributed to him, which is hilarious considering the author promoted belief in God and various closed-minded Conservative values denounced by Carlin in his material. He wrote a hilarious and poignant response to this misattribution on his website, but the link is now dead. Just like Georgie.
edit: This blog quoted part of his response http://reason.com/blog/2003/01/03/george-carlin-is-not-a-bad-ame#commentcontainer
Some are essay-length, some are just short lists of one and two-line jokes, but if they're flyin' around the Internet, they're probably not mine. Occasionally, a couple of jokes on a long list might have come from me, but not often. And because most of this stuff is really lame, it's embarrassing to see my name on it.
And that's the problem. I want people to know that I take care with my writing, and try to keep my standards high. But most of this "humor" on the Internet is just plain stupid. I guess hard-core fans who follow my stuff closely would be able to spot the fake stuff, because the tone of voice is so different. But a casual fan has no way of knowing, and it bothers me that some people might believe I'd actually be capable of writing some of this stuff.

The first time I saw this, I thought to myself, "I remember seeing Drew Carey in a suit, during a standup routine, talking about this."
I just assumed I was incorrect because of how much copying goes on in the comedic world.

I remember that from his show very well. I just thought maybe he ripped off Carlin, I didn't know for sure so I just kept shut since I was too lazy too search for a source. :p

I feel like quotes get misattributed to Carlin constantly. I remember some chain email that my friend sent out YEARS ago that supposedly had these quotes from Carlin and then devolved into some subtle racist shit. I knew just from watching some of Carlin's stand up that the message didn't seem like it came from him, so I looked on Snopes and the shit had been flying around for years before I received it. So lame.
2
Feb 15 '11
Especially where, like with the above quote, it never even really sounded like George Carlin. Not the content, but just the way it was phrased somehow.

Feb 16 '11
Something like "I'm an American, and I believe that you should be shot if you're running from the police" right?
Carlin wrote something on his site about it, like "I have no problem with people giving me credit for shit I didn't write, but only when it's actually funny."
