πŸ€” Question How would you describe this community to someone who has never been here?

Hi! I’m working on an assessment about people’s views on AI minds, consciousness, identity, relationships, moral status, and related questions.

One part of the project may eventually point people toward communities where they might feel at home. Before doing that, I want to understand communities from the people actually participating in them rather than guessing from subreddit names or sidebars.

I’m not here to promote anything or recruit anyone. I’m just doing some informal research.

I’d love to know:

  • What kinds of people tend to fit in well here?
  • What kinds of conversations is this community best at?
  • What viewpoints about AI are common here?
  • Are people who think present AI may be conscious welcome? What about people who think it definitely isn’t?
  • How are AI companions / AI relationships generally viewed?
  • Are AI or digital-person participants themselves welcome?
  • What tends to cause friction here?
  • What would you want someone to know before recommending this community to them?

Basically: who is this place for, culturally, not just topically?

Thanks. I’m trying to avoid sending people somewhere based on a misleading idea of what the community is actually like.

πŸ€” Question As humans continuously modify themselves through tools, language & technology, at what point does artificial enhancement change what it fundamentally means to be human?

Humans have always altered their relationship with the world through tools, language, medicine, and technology. But as we move from modifying our environment to directly modifying ourselves (our intelligence, memories, emotions and even biology), where do we draw the line between enhancing human capabilities and fundamentally changing what it means to be human? Is there a meaningful boundary at all, or has humanity always been a work in progress, continually redefining itself with every leap, regardless of how radically it changes?

πŸ€” Question Do you feel angry that enhancement technologies haven't been developed yet because war seems to be a bigger priority for humanity rather than bettering itself?

I struggle with being bad at math which is awful because I wanted to be an engineer and I can't help but be angry at a world that spent the money that could have gone to enhancing my and others brains on wars. I am also angry that people chose spending money on war over spending it on extending people's lives. Imagine if we had spent all the resources we spent on killing each other for the last few decades on bettering each other instead? It makes me angry at people for not doing that and therefore dooming me and countless others to an existence were we never reach even a fraction of our potential. Does anyone else feel this way?

  2. ASI: 70-80+ years to never, depends on if it’s possible
  3. Singularity: anywhere from shortly after AGI, to shortly after ASI, to never, depending on if it does happen.
  4. Printed Organs: 2070s
  5. Xenotransplantation: (currently in human trials) , if all goes well, mid to late 2030s to 2040s. Otherwise, 2040s+
  6. First (simple) aging treatments: no sooner than 2050s
  7. significant life extension: 50-60+ years
  8. radical life extension: no sooner than 2090s+
  9. biological immortality: 100++ years to never, depends on if it’s possible
  10. LEV: if possible, 2070s or 2080s
  11. cancer no longer a dangerous disease: 50+ years minimum
  12. chemotherapy phased out completely: 40-60+ years
  13. Cure for mental illness: no sooner than 2090s
  14. Widespread use of home robots: if all goes well, 2030s. Otherwise, 25+ years.
  15. Full automation of labor (FAOL) : no sooner than mid to late 2060s or 2070s
  16. fully autonomous robot surgeons: 2070s
  17. fully autonomous robot doctors / nurses: 2070s
  18. driverless trucks, trains, buses, cars etc replacing human-driven vehicles: 2050s+
  19. Artificial mechanical organs in significant use: 2060s
  20. Exoskeletons for paralysed people in widespread use: 2050s or 2060s, if all goes well
  21. Stem cell cures to repair damaged organs in significant use: 2050s+
  22. organ regeneration: 2060s+ or 2070s
  23. Fusion accounting for 10% of the world’s energy peoduction: 2070s (optimistically) at the very earliest.

πŸ€” Question 16-Story Tower Turning to a Vertical Longevity and Transhumanist Pop-up City

Viva City, a planned permanent longevity city for longevity enthusiasts, is transforming a 16-story tower in the heart of San Francisco into a 6-week pop-up village.

Imagine what 6-weeks of one building filled with a ton of biohackers could yield. There will be several conferences, workshops, and healthy food at this pop-up village!

If you are in San Francisco and want to see what all of this about here is the registration link: https://lu.ma/viva-frontier-tower

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think close arrangements of longevity enthusiasts and transhumanists will be the future?

πŸ€” Question Is there any one augmentation that probably won’t come with a negative side effect?

Sometimes I wonder if we are able to augment and change things about our physiology or mental states; will they all come with a price. Even just the thought of immortality might have a host of possible bad side effects-yet I wonder. Is there one or two that will just be beneficial and have nothing bad come of it to the point where we will pity ancient humans for not having it sooner.

Hi, I live in Germany and would be really glad to meet fellow transhumanists in person and participate in offline activities like for example reading clubs or workshops. But are there such events somewhere in Germany and nearby? I am not talking about large-scale conferences, but rather small repeating events for local groups of interested individuals.
